Also, I'm sick of that weird fantasy trope (mostly YA fantasy) where there's a snarky peasant girl, usually a thief or a something, who has magic but it's outlawed, and then a prince who either doesn't have magic or has weird magic and they fall in love. It was good in ADSOM but it's been overdone to death lately imo.

on the new subject of Poe, we read a story called Usher II by Ray Bradbury. It's about a guy that recreates stuff from Poe's stories and um yeah it's really good. I've only read a couple of Poe's stories and I was still able to appreciate this genius 'tis very good

Ya I’m a huge Poe fan and that sounds really cool! I’m gonna have to read it. I really love how well he portrays that loss of control and the desperation of trying to regain it that afflicts so many of the characters in his stories

A chick who’s passionate about the portrayal of all types of relationships in all types of stories. I just think representation is really important for those who may see themselves as somehow bad or wrong because of what is or isn’t prominent in media.

Yeah I think it would be really interesting to see a story where the character becomes invested in the legality of magic not because they are forced to, but because they make the decision to join the fight of their own volition

Personally, I think a balance between the two would be healthy for a lot of people, as both friendships and romantic relationships would be shown as natural and okay

Yeah, it's one thing if the MC has magic, but if everyone else we meet has it too, then it's annoying.
Especially when it's stuff like elemental magic, how have you not been found out yet when you're constantly using fire and stuff?

Yeah somehow in these types of stories the magic never feels rare enough and the reader gets the sense that it’s near impossible for this many people to successfully hide these kinds of abilities

mmkay I kinda have this–but only because the magic users bred too much with the normal humans so they lost their connection to magic. My OC is a descendant of a powerful line and their magic gets forcibly awakened. Another character in a later book is also a descendant but they can only like–make plants grow better. Really lame stuff.
I feel this. "Yes I do this thing that is frowned upon, but it's really good I promise!"
Honestly, big mood. Like, in my main story, I use the protagonist as a way to introduce the audience to the setting, but I also want to make sure she has a strong enough personality to drive an entire book, so the world is definitely going to be colored by her experiences, even though it’s in third person
