“Mm, that offer sounds very tempting, but I’m all out of leasure spending money for… the next week, I believe,” Yeon said, pausing mid sentence to think about when his next job was.

'No, I'll pay,' offered Tyler. 'What would you like?'

Charlotte stood up when she heard the boys talking about coming up to get something. Can't make it seem like I was listening in….quick, take out your gameboy! She took the game out of her pocket and began absentmindedly playing it.

“If you insist, I’ll pay you back later when I get cash. I probably just need a small black coffee, I get a bit loud and hyper when I’ve had too much caffeine,” Yeon said with a chuckle.

"Um." Say yes, you idiot. "Y-yeah, sure." Lloyd moved his chair over so Lola could pull one up, pushing the textbook to the side.

Lola smiled gratefully. “Thanks.” She sat down. “So, do you go to college?”, she asked politely.

Lloyd shook his head. "I'm a senior in high school, but I'm sixteen." He looked away awkwardly. "I… skipped a couple grades.."

Lola grinned broadly. “That’s so cool! What do you want to study in college?”

"Well, I really like science and art, but art doesn't pay very well. I was planning on majoring science and minoring art, so I could do art as a side thing and science would be my main job. I doubt I'd be a good teacher though…" Lloyd ran his fingers along the spine of his textbook. The cover was well worn, considering he read it so often.

“And why do you say that?”

"I'm.. um… not great with people. Or talking to people. People can be scary sometimes…" Did you seriously just say 'people are scary'? You're such a wimp, oh my god.

Her eyes softened a bit. “I can sympathize with that.” Her mind immediately went to the hormone blockers.

A pink tint rose to Lloyd's cheeks. You're acting like a child. Technically, I still am! I'm only sixteen. Yeah, but you hold yourself to a higher standard, don't you? Pull yourself together.

She took a sip of her coffee. “So, What university are you planning on going to?”

"I'm considering Oaksville right now, but Boyd also looks good. They both have pretty good science programs." (Random names btw)

“I go to Oaksville! I’m studying marine biology and art.”

"Really? How do you like it? Animals are fascinating, aren't they? And the ocean… we've only explored around 5% of it! Who knows what might in the the unexplored depths?"

“It’s amazing oh my god! My personal favorites are deep see squid and octopus, did you know that they found an underwater lake?”

Lloyd nodded. "I think the giant crustaceans that live on the ocean floor are quite interesting. They can withstand all that pressure, and thrive! Many thousand feet above that, people would be instantly crushed!"

“Also, there are tube worms living so deep in the ocean, that there’s no light whatsoever. They survive on nutrients brought up by boiling waiter vents.” She paused, grinning. “I am such a geek.”

"So am I! I actually read science textbooks for fun. Skipping grades was amazing because then I didn't have to deal with the jerks who bully me for being such a nerd…"

Nerds… Charlotte thought, smirking to herself.

“Being a nerd is great! Much better to have the periodic table memorized and read books all day than do whatever normal people do.”

"Yeah, I honestly don't know how small talk comes so easily to people. I just don't see the point of it. Why shouldn't we talk about Socrates' writings? Or the teachings of Aristotle? Or, I don't know, marine biology?"

Lola laughed, but it was warm. “I feel you 100%. Also, why shouldn’t I yell at people who are racist, sexist, homophobic, or transphobic?”

"I don't really have the confidence to yell at people… I just fantasize conversations in my head where I do, and I can yell at them all I want in my head." You basically just told her you hear voices and want to yell at people. What?! No I didn't!

“Oh, I plan out conversations all the time.”, she laughed.

Lloyd breathed a mental sigh of relief. "Yeah, confrontation is… daunting to say the least."

Speak up! Charlotte thought as she watched Lola and the boy talk. It's hard to overhear your conversation when you lower your voices!
