“Don’t hold it right into your eyes! You’ll blind yourself,” Alex said, gently pointing the torch away from his eyes, “Hey uh, where are you staying? I’ll give you a ride home.”
“Don’t hold it right into your eyes! You’ll blind yourself,” Alex said, gently pointing the torch away from his eyes, “Hey uh, where are you staying? I’ll give you a ride home.”
He took a moment to recover, blinking several times. "Ow, my eyes," he rubbed them, then took a deep breath and answered, "I don't.. really remember," he admitted, his playful curiosity devolving into a somber confusion. "I don't know where I am or what happened, I just, woke up under dirt." He mumbled.
Alex narrowed his eyes at the ground, then they widened at sudden realisation, “Under the dirt? And you woke up in a graveyard… that means you’re… you were… dead.”
John's face went blank. Many expressions crossed his path, before settling on disbelief. "That's impossible," he laughed weakly.
"Well, you're here, aren't you?" Alex raised a brow, "how else can you explain waking up in a graveyard, under a mound of dirt. I'm no scientist but that points to you being dead."
John looked back at the stone he'd crawled from, "Can I.. use the light, for a moment?"
Alex nodded and handed it to him, "Of course."
He handled the thin brick with shaking hands, shining it in the decrepit gravestone. He didn't even need to read all of it to make him tear up. "Oh." He gave it back quickly, "Oh. I remember, now.."
He titled his head to the side, "Would you care to tell me? You don't have to, but it would help so I know how to help you."
"Well," he inhaled slowly, "I'm a soldier? A patriot, actually. Under Washington,"
"Really? Wow… okay," He blinked a few times, processing the information.
He smiled sheepishly, then sadly. "Last I remember, I was shot.."
"My stars, I'm so sorry." Alex bit his lip a little.
John bent over and looked at his side, pressing his fingers against his clothes where he remembered the fatal shot burrowing into his gut. "Where…"
Alex tilted his head a little, "Where… what?"
