Arien looked to the tree. He thought he saw someone duck behind it.
Arien looked to the tree. He thought he saw someone duck behind it.
Evie bit her lip. Don't make any noise…
"Who's there?" Arien called out.
Evie winced and peeked around the tree.
Arien started towards the tree.
"The pain it hurts," Ellie mumbled as she fell to the ground.
Arien stopped and turned to Ellie.
"Are you okay?"
"Pain pain pain," Ellie started mumbling over and over again. She was curled on the ground
Arien touched Ellie's arm.
Evie peered around the tree again. I can help her… Maybe… If I'm careful.
Arien felt flames licking around his other hand. He held it away, so as not to burn Ellie.
Xander felt overwhelmed. He looked around and his gaze landed back on Evie.
"Goodness…" he murmured, scanning the whole area.
Ellie was on the ground.
"Ellie, you could die if you keep trying to do this stuff. You saw enough as it was."
Evie flinched when the boy looked at her. "I-I can help…" she whispered, knowing that he wouldn't hear.
Xander drew closer.
"What? Can you do something?"
His stance was still very tense. He hoped he wasn't accidentally being intimidating.
Evie moved closer to the tree. "I can try," she whispered, not looking him in the eye.
"It's beyond me," Xander admitted, "Give it a go. I'm sure you'll do fine."
He stepped aside, pressing his back up against the tree's trunk.
Arien backed up from Ellie. Did he do this?
Evie tentatively came out from behind the tree. She purposefully didn't look at Arien as she made her way to the girl who was curled on the ground. Slowly, she knelt beside her and looked her over for a second.
"Is she okay?"
Evie bit her lip. "She's tangled."
Xander tilted his head.
"What do you mean?"
He started to walk back over, but he kept some distance.
"Her mind," Evie murmured. Her fingers wiggled a little.
Arien's face crinkled with confusion.
"What does that mean..?"
"It's much different from my magic, then…" Xander replied, "I should've let her be instead of letting her use me to train. I don't know the first thing about using mind-based magics."
Arien sucked in a breath.
"I didn't do this, did I?"
"No, we were… I was helping her test her magic before this happened. She was already weak, and that much is my fault. She tried to analyze your mind for memories before I could jump in and stop her," Xander explained, "Had I not carried so many bad, painful memories… maybe…"
Slowly, her fingers trembled slightly and red magic appeared. It swirled around her fingers and crept slowly towards Ellie's head.
Arien touched his hand. The flames came up his arm and surrounded his head, like a halo.
Evie continued to look through Ellie's head. Her irises turned faintly red.
“Any luck?” Xander whispered.
He made sure to keep an eye on their surroundings.
