“They will,” William assured her. “A lot. There’s going to be lots of teasing involved.”

“If you think I’m worse, wait until you meet my parents,” William muttered under his breath. “They’re a nightmare.”

William shot a smile at her, though it was a little… forced? Two days ago, he had spilled something to her that he never told anyone else. The reason why he was a troubled adult. The reason why he was so messed up. He felt exposed—as if he had been stripped off of thousands of layers. He didn’t regret telling her, no. It just felt… strange.

“Oh, there it is,” William muttered, finally parking the car. “Just don’t take their teasings to heart.”

Amber had watched him closely the whole time. They’d both said things they didn’t necessarily want to, but it would be good for them. Right? Couples were supposed to tell each other everything, weren’t they?

She smiled a little as he parked, reaching over to cover one of his hands in her own when they car came to a stop. “Hey. Whatever happens in there, it’ll turn out okay.”

William took a deep breath, taking her hands in his.

“I don’t really know if they want to see me,” he admitted. “The last time we talked, it involved more throwing things than decent words. I left for college soon afterwards.”

“They’ll want to see you, hun. From what you’ve told me about them, it sounds like they love you a lot. No matter what happened then, this is now. The past is the past,” Amber said gently.

“You always know what to say, huh?” William caressed her cheek. “Well, let’s go inside, hm?”

“A terrible one,” William answered the rhetorical question before exiting the car. They walked to the front of the house and William rang the bell.

A woman with brown hair answered, wrinkles on her face but otherwise looking young. Upon seeing William, her face lighted up. But then a second later, it died.

“William…” she whispered, wrapping her arms around the taller male. “You—you never told me you were visiting…”

William quirked an eyebrow, but hugged his mother back.

“I thought I’d give you a surprise…” he started in confusion. “What’s wrong?”

Before his mother could answer, William froze. Inside the house, he could see the person who ruined him.

His grandmother.

(*lit not lighted. Lol.)

Amber kept just behind William, her hand holding tightly to his. She smiled at the woman who she guessed to be William’s mother, but she didn’t respond. And that was okay. She hadn’t seen her son in months.

And then William stiffened, she she looked up at him. He looked… afraid? Why did he look— Amber’s eyes followed his line of vision, and she gently squeezed his hand. Oh, no… If that was who she thought it was…

(Jeiwjejej my brain isn’t working)

William pulled away from his mother’s embrace, fury replacing his fear.

“What the hell is she doing here?” He snarled, clenching his fist. His mother flinched at the anger in his voice, but still reached out to touch his arm.

“Is that the way to talk to your mother?” His grandmother spoke up tauntingly. “It seems like whatever I taught you, you’ve forgotten.”

Mother,” William’s mom hissed in warning. “William, can we talk inside? Please?”

“No,” William pulled out of her touch, though his grip on Amber’s hand tightened. “Either you kick her out, or I’m leaving.”

“William, please,” his mother insisted. “I can’t—you know I can’t. She doesn’t have anywhere else to be—“

“Not my problem,” William said coldly. “Seems like I only wasted time coming here. C’mon, Blue, let’s go back.”

@Imperfect_Autumn group

Amber placed a gentle hand on his arm to stop him, looking up at him gently. “Will… C’mon, why don’t you just talk to your mother? Just for a little bit. I’m sure she could figure something out,” she murmured to him softly.

“There’s nothing to talk about,” William growled, eyes never leaving the old woman. “I can’t believe you would just—“

“Do you think I want her here?” Lillian finally exhaled. “William, you should know better than anyone else that if I had any other choice, she wouldn’t be here. But she’s my mother. There are certain things I need to act on. I promise, she won’t be staying for long.”

William breathed heavily before he shook his head.

“Whatever,” he pushed past his mother, his hand still holding Amber’s. He looked at his grandmother straight in the eyes when he stopped. “You come an inch near me or my girlfriend, you even try to talk to her and you’ll regret it.”

@Imperfect_Autumn group

“Will,” Amber whispered, stumbling a little as she was pulled inside. She knew why he was acting this way, and he had every right to be angry, but she didn’t want him to get so angry that it got him in trouble. “Will, it’ll be okay.”

William snapped his attention towards Amber, his eyes softening. He sighed.

“I’m sorry,” he murmured, nuzzling her neck, though there was still fury threatening to burst out.

“This is the first time you brought a girl home,” Lilliam interrupted softly. “I’m happy, you know. My baby boy actually likes someone.”

William grumbled, shooting his mom an exasperated look, pretending his grandmother wasn’t in the room. Maybe if he pretended she didn’t exist, she wouldn’t.

“This is Amber,” he introduced, looking apologetically at his mother. Lilliam merely smiled. “Amber, my mother.”

Amber gave the older woman a polite smile and stuck her hand out to shake. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Jones. William’s told me how much he loves you.”

Lillian paused, looking behind William. She sighed in relief when her mother took her leave.

“Oh, he has?” Her lips twisted into a smile. “You know, he used to be—“

“I think Amber’s tired from the ride,” William interrupted. “I’ll take her to my room.”

“You just want to hear embarrassing stories so you can annoy me,” William rolled his eyes. “Where’s dad?”

“He’s working a little late,” Lillian replied before grabbing Amber’s hand. “I’ll be borrowing your girlfriend, then. This is the first time you’ve brought a girl home. Do forgive me for being excited.”

@Imperfect_Autumn group

Amber laughed a little and reached up to peck William’s cheek. “I’m sure you can survive without me for a minute while your mom ‘borrows’ me,” she teased.

“Don’t fill her head with conspiracies, mom,” William rolled his eyes, kissing his girlfriend on the forehead. “I’m going to put our bags away, okay?”

When William disappeared inside, Lillian turned towards Amber.

"Thank you," she breathed out. "I've never seen him look so… well, like this."

Lillian rolled her eyes, leading Amber into the kitchen. She poured water in a glass and handed it to the girl.

“I would be surprised if it was,” she chuckled. “Well, I finally got the chance to show off baby pictures. And tell you the embarrassing stories. I’ve been waiting for this day, actually.”

Lillian’s eyes darted towards the hallway where the rooms where.

“He’s… doing okay, right?” She questioned softly. “Having fun? Considering himself normal for once?”

@Imperfect_Autumn group

Amber chewed on her lip as her gaze followed the other woman’s. “Well… He is doing okay, yes. I think he’s gotten better in the past few months. As for normal… I’m not sure. I don’t think he’s quite there yet, to be honest.”
