He nodded, making his way up the stairs.
Tess was in her room, wings and bare torso–save for a bra–heavily bandaged as she sat on her bed, dead eyed. She didn't hear Runner.
He lightly knocked on the doorframe, wincing slightly.
She slowly looked up at him, blinking.
"Hey," he said, looking down at his feet for a moment before looking back up.
"Hey," she croaked.
He stepped inside, sitting next to her on the bed.
She winced as she shifted closer, stretching her wings out some as per doctor's orders. "I–I should't have let him sneak up on me. None of this would have happened if," she took a breath. "if I'd just been paying attention."
He shook his head. "How could you have known?"
"I'm a warrior, Runner. I'm supposed to be trained for surprised attacks, supposed to be ready for them!" She looked away from him.
"And I'm supposed to be a vicious murderer of the entire Vanguard. Mistakes happen."
"My mistake nearly got me killed for the second time." Her voice was haunted.
He shrugged. "Some are worse than others. But you're still alive, right? Isn't that something to be happy about?"
She clenched her jaw, then sighed, running a hand over her bandaged stomach. "I guess."
"Would it hurt if I hugged you?"
"Probably, but I'll manage." she offered him a small smile.
He put his arms out
She scooted close, wrapping an arm and wing around him and grunting at the quick stab of pain.
"Sorry," he said, pulling his arms back slightly.
"No, you're fine. Doctor said to move anyway. Babysitter said suck it up." she chuckled.
He snorted, then put his arms back where they were before.
She snuggled close, sighing and relaxing. "So much for a peaceful nap."
"I…I met my mom," he said after a few moments of silence.
She blinked, but didn't move. "The dark sorceress?"
He nodded. "I have a sister."
"Who?"
"That one-armed girl from the Runes temple. Clover."
"I wasn't there, so I don't know her." She hummed to herself. "You don't sound thrilled."
"She punched me in the face."
