"Finishing up her last bit." She winced as she flexed her leg and went back to icing it.
"Finishing up her last bit." She winced as she flexed her leg and went back to icing it.
He nodded. "How you feeling?"
"Pulled a muscle. I'll be fine." She leaned back, tossing the ice onto a nearby crate. "Go on any exciting adventures while you were gone?"
"Well, Junia made Tess this for me, so I wouldn't get my ass beat," he said, pulling out the necklace.
Cinthia looked up at it. "Beautiful as always. She really went all out with this one, though." She nodded. "She definitely saved your ass with that one."
"I could barely think, my head hurt so bad."
"Figured. I'm sure Tess will understand." She rolled her shoulders. "She's coming." With that, Cinthia got up and went into a separate room, still backstage but away from him and the approaching Tessa.
He winced as he saw the look on her face.
She marched right up to him and got into his face, jabbing a finger into his chest as she spoke. "Where the hell were you?!"
"My head was hurting too bad, Tess. Too much magic all in one area. I could barely think."
She narrowed her eyes, but didn't say anything. She didn't back away either. She sighed and looked away. "You couldn't at least stay for one bit?"
"No, cause I was too busy getting you this," he said, showing the necklace.
Her eyes widened at the sight of the necklace. "You… It's beautiful," she breathed. She hesitantly reached up to brush her fingers over it. "What the hell did that cost?"
He shrugged. "Junia said it was on someone's tab. Don't remember who."
"Of course Shorty made it," she said, a little more bitterly than she intended.
He tilted his head. "What's wrong with it?"
"Nothing, I love it." She gently took the necklace, feeling heat rise in her neck and praying Runner didn't notice. "It's beautiful," she repeated.
He sat there for a moment, then sighed, looking away. "Look, Tess, I'm…..I'm tired of all the workaround bullshit we do, you know? I'm too impatient, I guess. But….the whole reason why I took this job is to be with you more. And I'm scared. Like, I've been running my whole life, never having any responsibility, never having to answer to anyone and basically riding solo. And now….I've found someone that I want to stay still for and I don't know how it's gonna work out. I've never been this nervous around someone. Never worried about how I looked. Never cared about someone as much as I care about you. And now I'm rambling and I sound like an idiot."
She blinked up at him, mouth slightly parted. He… cares about me? But how? Why? She finally found herself speechless, and it was the worst possible moment. She licked her lips, nervous and unsure of what to say. "Runner…" she began, breathy, but didn't know how to end. What the hell had happened to her? She was the queen of flirting, never got tripped up when it came to things like that. But now she was a bumbling idiot. All she could think of to say while looking away was: "You don't deserve someone like me." And she didn't mean it in the self-absorbed way.
"I'm the son of a demon lord, guaranteed a spot in Hell no matter what I do. No, I deserve a lot worse."
She swallowed, nervous. Then she slowly slid her hands up his chest and around his neck. Hesitant. Unsure. Her cheeks flushed for the first time she allowed them to.
Know what? he thought, Fuck it. He leaned in, his lips touching her's.
She froze, then relaxed, returning the kiss and pulling him closer.
He rested his hands lightly on her hips, trying to repress a smile as she pulled him closer.
She felt his small smile and broke out in one of her own, unable to hold in hers
He finally pulled away for air, his face beyond red.
She chuckled at his red face. "Not bad," she breathed.
He looked star-struck, opening his mouth to say something then closing it just as quick.
She pulled back slightly. "What."
He blinked a few times, then simply said, "Wow."
