Sometimes authors like to build intrigue around a concept by building it up over time or only giving small drops of info. When done correctly, it can leave readers genuinely intrigued and allow for tons of speculation. But if done poorly, readers see as more of a gimmick and come to hate it.
i want to see a book of cliches, written as the opposite of those cliches.
-
"Oh no, popular girl and her jock boyfriend bully me for no reason!!!"
—into—> "Haha, yeah, I pissed off the Yu-Gi-Oh fan club and they sorta hate me now. Why? Probably because I threw a bunch of Pokémon cards at them yelling STAY WOKE."
-
"Oh no someone called me a slut even tho it's not true now I'm gonna run and cry because I'm so sensitive!!!"
—into—> "Right back at you, ya hoe. We still on for that party Thursday? Or am I calling your boyfriend?"
-
"An unimportant side character called me gay!! sobs"
—into—> "Hella. Been emitting this chaotic bi energy since freshman year. I'm honestly surprised it took you this long."
-
"Ohmygod there are lights and candles and blankets and itsapicnic next to a waterfall!!"
—into—> "Psht, yeah, I am not getting into that kayack. This was not what I was expecting our first date to be. Do you even know how to navigate a river? Not without Google Maps? Hell no. Come on you spork, lets go get a coffee and binge YouTube at your house. Okaayy fine, I'll do it. But I'm choosing what our next three dates will be."
-
"I'm so new to this school I don't know anyone" or "Oh my god s/he is new and they're so hot!!"
—into—> "Okay, but I've been here for three years, are you sure you're not new?" "I've literally been in your english class for the past three years what the hell." "I'm not an observant person okay! Besides, the only people I talk to in there are my friends." "Gee thanks."
-
"She just said he cheated on my oh my god how could he I'm going to go disappear and lose my shit for three months."
—into—> "Please, I saw how piss drunk you were. You probably thought he was your dad!" Actually talks to their significant other. "Yeah, obviously it was a lie. I have more faith in you than that."
Also, I despise the stereotypical school settings. In my experience, people are never divided into groups like jocks, nerds, emos, divas, cheerleaders, drama club etc. Everyone just hangs out with anyone they want.
E X A C T L Y!!!!!
Yeah, the drama kids hang out, but because they're all friends who happen to do drama. Not because they're an elitist clique. They're just….friends.
okay okay okay I've got one.
characters that are half something and half human but stronger than both races for some odd reason that totally makes sense?????
I hate this. It needs to stop.
What's wrong with being a full alien/elf/demon/angel/vampire/warlokc/spider/succubus/pile of dirt/etc????
AND THEY'RE HALF-SOMETHING BUT GET NO FLAWS AND ONLY THE STRENGTHS OF BOTH SIDES???
YES THAT SHIT TOO
I have a character that is half-something but gets all the flaws and almost no strengths.
I already like that character
Ye, he's one of my favorites.
tries to explain what he's like but only succeeds in waving my arms around vaguely
…That is the most relatable thing I’ve ever read
I have mutant characters, which are just humans with a power that's from a mutated gene. I always make the power a double edged sword. Dorian, an empath, can instantly tell whatever people are feeling, but he can't control his own emotions, let alone others. So he's just constantly overloaded with all these different feelings all the time and it's confusing as hell. Sivik has enhanced senses, so he can see, hear, smell, taste and feel everything way better than normal humans, but his eyes and ears are sensitive to bright colors and loud noise, his body is more severely affected by temperature, extreme tastes can cause him to throw up, touch means pain is more intense, and smell is kind of self explanatory. Mason can conjure the dead and talk to them whenever he wants, but it works both ways. The dead constantly follow him around and bother him about vengeance, regrets, living family members and how they died, etc. He can ban them or show them to a living person, but it drains him of energy for days, so he rarely ever uses it.

And yes!! So true!! People meet people in classes or clubs, so a lot of them have similar interests, but they don't just hang out with those people!
Throne of Glass
Thank you! my best friend loves the books but I can't bring my self to keep reading them because of the before mentioned reasons.

My friend does too but y'all know I live to disappoint!
Mm I really dislike Dystopians that have a love triangle as one of the center points.
I love Dystopian stories but I want another one like The Maze Runner where there is less romance as the story goes on and more of the demented reality of a world that is freaking out because they are dying.
This is why the Hunger games was ruined for me. Cool idea of a world that forces their kids to kill for food, not so cool idea to have these kids fall for each other in a place where they’re supposed to be more focused on survival. Romance in a world like this can be good in small doses but when it’s the center focus as a love triangle it bugs me.

That's weird. I hated how the romance seemed to take over The Maze Runner and how Thomas kept talking about Theresa and Brenda. The Hunger Games always focused on survival first and romance later, and I loved that it showed that people can still fall in love even in the worst of worlds.
And then there's Throne of Glass, where the romance dominates everything and it goes from fantasy to smutfic.

I still think hunger games is great, I can't really explain it but this can.

It's literally my favorite YA book series of all time, and it's one of the most well-written things I've ever read. It never sunk to the level of just being a love triangle and honestly? I know people who've said it's all about the love triangle and I start to question if they read the book.
Plus it gave us the anti-thesis to the Brooding Badass Badboy in the form of Peeta Mellark.
I hate when there's a ton of buildup and you're really excited for the big thing at the end and then it's totally anticlimactic, like there was this one book series (yeah. series. I bought three books) that the first two books were really great, I was loving the plot twists, I was hooked. And the same goes for the beginning of book three, but then near the middle and end it started slowing down, and it picked back up a bit right before the end, and then the end happens and I was just sitting there thinking what? Like there was so much that happened and so much the characters worked to do, and then the villain dies by chance? Like, where was the real ending? I would like to have a real ending.
I don’t know if anyone has brought this up before, but all love triangles I’ve ever seen in fiction haven’t been love triangles, but love right angles.
Example: Persons A and B are childhood friends with great chemistry, but Person C comes along and Person A starts to fall for their mischievous antics and heart of gold, so Person B becomes jealous and tries to win Person A’s heart.
THAT IS NOT A LOVE TRIANGLE
That is a love right angle, as two people are fighting for the affections of one person. For it to count as a love triangle, everyone involved needs to have feelings for everyone else. For example, Person A needs to have a crush on Persons B and C, Person B needs to have a crush on Persons A and C, and Person C needs to have a crush on Persons A and B
I’m starting geometry in school, and this has just recently started to piss me off. What do you guys think?

Everyone knows this, but it's easier to call it a triangle.

Yes, but it's English and there's a ton of words or terms that don't make sense so just we all just kinda have to live with it, like the atrocity that is the term ot3

I refuse to say OT3. It's still an OTP, it just has more than 2 people involved!

Eh, who gives a fuck. English will always make no sense.
Nothing is “on fire”. Fire is on things. English is dumb

well if you cook things over a fire it's "on fire"

True
Also by dictionary definition "on fire" Is the correct terminology, on just means attached to, so if something is "on fire" it is attached to the fire, does that make more sense?
I WANT HEALTHY PLATONIC MALE/MALE FRIENDSHIPS!
I WANT HEALTHY PLATONIC MALE/MALE FRIENDSHIPS!
YES
I was rewatching Fantastic Beasts to prep for FB2's DVD release, and Jacob and Newt are like the best BrOTP. They're friends who actually care about each other, don't hesitate to fill the other in on stuff they don't know, and are willing to help each other with stuff.
Just realized this is the Less Of chat and not the More Of one. Rip.
OH MY GOD!
THE 'MAGIC HEALS DISABILITY TROPE'!
OH MY GOD I HATE IT!
