"Am I really the only adult here?" He sighed and shook his head slightly, "And who might you be, Miss?" He asked, looking over at the figure.
"Am I really the only adult here?" He sighed and shook his head slightly, "And who might you be, Miss?" He asked, looking over at the figure.
“Kayla.” The girl responded, standing up. She honestly looked like she’d been through hell.
“Why are you so sad???” Jonah pouted.
"Not everyone has a good life, Jonah," He muttered, resting his head back against the wall, "And some people aren't very nice and do bad things. I'm sorry for whatever you've been through, Kayla."
“Permission to scream?” She asked to no one in particular.
“You’re just gonna hurt-“ but she began before he could finish. You couldn’t hear it but you could pratically see the waves, the door vibrating. She stopped after a second, clutching her ears.
“I told you it’s just gonna bounce back!” Jonah sounded frustrated but in a concerned way. “Oh and when you asked earlier if you’re the only adult here, you pretty much are. There’s less people with powers among the older generation”
"Great. That's just… great," He sighed and rubbed at his face, crossing his legs and leaning forward a little, "You okay Kayla? What was… what did you do?"
“I guess you could call it a super scream? It’s my power, normally I can shatter stuff….I mean that is how I accidentally blew out someone’s ear drums and killed him….” she fell silent again. It was the story on the news the other day, the dead politician, that was her.
His eyes widened a little, "Oh… I'm sorry." He couldn't imagine killing anybody, whether it be on purpose or an accident. It gave him the shivers.
She shrugged “maybe they’re right, maybe we deserve to be locked up.” She fell back into her silence and Jonah spoke up. “But you have a chance to get out of here. I can tell, they don’t plan on keeping you forever. I think they’re planning on recruiting you.”
“But is it worth having a tracker on you all the time? Watching your every move and making sure you don’t use your powers unless the government tells you to?” Kyle curled up into his jumper.
Jonah shrugged and then remembered Kyle couldn’t see it. “It isn’t worth it. That’s why some of us stay hidden. The rest of us find Dark Ride.” He frowned “the news tries to make him look super mean though…”
“Have you met Ride?” He asked quietly, turning his head slightly to Jonah’s voice.
He hesitated for a second before responding in a hushed voice. “Yup. And you know what, he’ll come rescue us soon, I know he will!”
“Jonah, he’s… he’s bad. Haven’t you seen what he’s done?”
He sighed in frustration “you’re just like everyone else! He’s not a bad person!”
“I’m calling what I see, Jonah. If I meet Ride then I’ll develop my true opinion on him but for now I’m in the neutral zone.”
“…he only hurts people when he has to. And he never hurts civilians.” He was kinda defensive honestly.
“What’s he like? Personality wise?” He asked quietly, closing his eyes.
“He’s…really nice actually. He makes sure that everyone always gets what they need. He kinda has this tough love thing going on but we all know he’s really just a big softy.” He pauses for a second, his voice more sad now “but he always carries this figurative weight around that no one can ever seem to take. He’s kinda crazy in that way, he takes care of everyone but himself. But yeah…real tough guy act going on. Jeez he’s hard to explain.”
“He sounds… nice. I’d actually like to meet him one day, if I’m ever let out of this place.” Never in a million years didn’t Kyle think he’d say that but from the way Jonah was describing him… he didn’t sound all that bad.
“Don’t worry, I’m sure he’ll be here soon. Knowing him he should be here within a day maybe two.”
“A day! That’s still too long…” His mind drifted to Caleb and wondered if he would be worried.
“Well he has to make it look random. If he gets here too soon then they’ll think he’s after one of us specifically or that he has inside information somehow.”
“I guess that’s true,” He sighed and rubbed at his face, “Sadly.”
“Don’t worry! Everything’s gonna be okay!” He said with such optimism that it must have been him that jinxed the whole scenario. Because less than a minute later two scientists walked in. You can see Kayla shrink back a few inches, fear present in her gaze. Jonah fell silent.
Kyle looked up at the two and frowned, staying still where he sat, “What do you want?”
No one said a word. The two scientists just grabbed Kayla, dragging her out. She didn’t even try to resist.
Kyle watched wordlessly with everyone else, a frown still etched into his features.
As soon as they were gone, Jonah let out a choked sob “they don’t even think of us as real people!”
“Shh, it’s okay,” Kyle tried to keep his voice from wobbling, “We’ll get out of here.”
Jonah was still crying quietly. This was what he hated most about being able to hear people’s thoughts. There was no room left to doubt how bad someone really was when you could hear their train of thought.
