(California?) Sam sighed. "Fine. The dramatic surprise is ruined, but whatever," They bent down, and after fiddling with something on the ground for a couple seconds, lifted the rock like a flap. "Ha. Dumbasses. Nah, it's just a painted tent flap sprayed with a hardening substance. Come in!"

“What the fuc- Sorry,” Eleanor said, cutting herself off.

"Why… What?" Maggie said, sliding off the boulder and grabbing a protein bar. "Sam, you're one crazy biatch."

Sam bowed deeply. "Thanks! I come here when things are bad at my house, so there's living materials and more. Plus…" They crawled inside and opened up the other tent flap, revealing a clearing with a miniature waterfall and a brook. "Look what was behind that huge rock wall! The tent is set up in a small tunnel caused by a rockslide, but now it looks like a rock! Clever, if I do say so myself,"

“It is clever… but we’re not fugitives. We can go back, at least until the police start realizing something’s not adding up,” Eleanor said, hesitant to just drop everything and run.

"What about the monsters?" Sam asked, hands on hips. "I've read enough sci-fi to know that if something happens to the main character, their families and friends will also be in danger,"

Maggie put a hand on Eleanor's shoulder,"El, I know that hiding seems like a weird right now. I think so too. But What's going to happen if we go back and try to do the normal routine when Jamie starts spitting ice everywhere during math? Or if I get hurt in gym, like severely and come back the next day completely better? People are going to notice things. This might be the best option we have right now."

“I- okay then… but let’s talk about that. Does anyone else have secret abilities now too? I don’t think I do, but maybe it’s cause I’be been calm this entire time.”

Sam shook their head, lips twisting into a bitter smile. "Nope. And believe me, I've tried,"

“Eh, maybe they’ll pop out eventually or maybe they won’t. Either way, guess we’re in this mess together now,” she said, looking around at everyone. “What eve were those things?”

“That’s a fair point, but it makes you wonder how they knew it would land there. Are they even from Earth? I really didn’t expect my life to turn into some s i-if novel because I went to school,” she said, looking at the road.

"Ok, but if we think that these, these things have motives, specifically to draw power from the lightning bolt, who controls them? Do they have a master, like robots or are they like a pack of wolves? We know nothing about these things. Well, almost nothing. we know that they don't like light, so they are probably(hopefully) nocturnal creatures." Maggie knelt down to look through one of the tent flaps, glancing back at Jamie and Leon who had been quiet for the majority of the event.

Eleanor pulled a notebook out of her bag. “Let’s write everything we know. We can make logical guesses from there.”

Lucille nodded, but stayed silent.

She sat down on the floor of the little tent and started writing. “There was a lightning bolt, which we can safely assume is what you guys got your powers from,” she said, writing neatly. “The creatures attacked after that - we can safely assume they knew the lightning would give them powers.l

"Wait, how do now know that? What if the lightning only effected humans?" Maggie moved over to sit next to Eleanor. She enjoys poking holes in things

"We don't know, so let's test it out first," Sam said, suddenly all business. "Eleanor, write down a list of the most common superpowers in literature, and we'll try them out right now,"
