@Hawkeye
“Back to the beach? One of our cabins? Dining pavilion?”
“Back to the beach? One of our cabins? Dining pavilion?”
“Perhaps we should part ways.” Trenton looked at his feet, shifting his weight nervously. “I’m afraid I’ve put you in harm’s way multiple times today, which is unacceptable behavior on my part.” The boy sounded almost like he was reading a script based on the way he talked. He’d clearly said the second half of that sentence many times before.
“Hey, you didn’t do anything wrong….” Lydia was starting to wonder if she was right in what she thought about Trent. “I’m not going to leave you alone.”
Trenton took a deep breath before promptly clearing his throat. He opened his mouth to speak, but closed it again. “I suppose I will just follow your lead.”
“Come on.” Lydia lead him to her cabin, opening the door. Her siblings tended to stay out of the cabin late, and she could lock the door behind her. She nodded to her bed, gesturing for him to sit.
Trenton sat down stiffly, taking in his surroundings.
Lydia sat down on her brother’s bed, so that she was facing Trent, after locking the door behind her.
Trenton’s head immediately snapped up after he heard the lock click, tensing up considerably. His eyes flashed between Lydia and the door several times before he shifted his gaze to the windows, counting available exits.
“You’re safe.” Lydia said quietly.
“For what reason did you lock the door?” Trenton asked quietly, eyeing the door again. “That’s a potential fire hazard.” He mumbled.
“Don’t want my siblings coming in. I can unlock it.”
*I'm still here… I just drew a self portrait for no reason…//
(Why not?)
Trenton nodded swiftly, falling silent again.
(That’s cool! I’m terrible at drawing lol)
“You alright?” Lydia asked, noticing her friend’s discomfort.
It actually looks pretty okay…//
(Nice.)
“I am doing well.” Trenton replied softly, looking around the cabin. “Your cabin is… different than mine, significantly so.”
“Yeah. There’s not very many of us, so it’s small.”
Trenton nodded again, unsure if what to do with himself. He sat relatively still, his hands folded in his lap.
“Relax. We’re safe here.”
“Sorry.” Trenton muttered, forcing his shoulders back to appear more relaxed. He straightened up his posture as well.
“Don’t apologize, Trent. You only ever need to apologize if you did something truly wrong. And nothing you’ve done so far has warranted an apology.”
Almost every action I’ve taken today warrants an apology. Trenton keep his thoughts silent. “I suppose it would then be inadequate to apologize for apologizing, yes?”
Lydia smiled sadly. “Yes. It’s ok to apologize, but don’t feel the need to with me. I can tell when you’re apologetic, you don’t need to tell me so.”
“Am I that easy to read?” Trent asked, his tone softening a little.
“Kind of.” Lydia said, smiling.
“You seem as though you have something on your mind.” Trent noted, studying Lydia for a moment. “You may share it if you wish. I like to think I am fair and just in judgment.”
Lydia smiled sadly again, but said, “No…. I don’t think I should right now. Later.”
Trenton was a bit curious, but didn’t press. He wasn’t 100% sure what to do with himself now. “I realize that…” He trailed off, stopping before he could apologize again. Why is that the only thing I’m capable of doing?
