Jay walked over to her and grabbed her shoulders. "It will be fine." He said in a reassuring voice.
Jay walked over to her and grabbed her shoulders. "It will be fine." He said in a reassuring voice.
She gasped suddenly at his touch, as if awakening back to reality. "It's my fault," she whispered. "If she never wakes up, it's my fault."
"shut up." He said a bit harshly. "It is not your fault and you are going to get in that ambulance as soon as they put her in there. And you are going to watch her at the hospital."
She nodded weakly. "And if… if…" Her lips wouldn't form the words. If she doesn't wake up…
He understood what she was trying to say. "If she doesn't wake up she doesn't wake up. Nothing in your power to help her. But I bet she will be ok, I have a feeling she has been through worse."
Kate nodded again. She couldn't bring herself to speak. The EMTs carefully loaded Maria onto a stretcher and wheeled her to the ambulance. Kate looked at Jay, then to her mother.
"are you going with her." He asked softly then stepped back.
Kate nodded once and ran after the paramedics. "Wait!" she cried. "I'm her daughter!"
Jay stood there and watched.
(Shives, check your inbox a second.)
One of them said something to her and helped her in. She looked back at Jay for a moment before the doors shut and the vehicle sped away.
Jay looked at the sky then breathed and walked away from the scene.
Kate grasped her mother's hand. "Mom?" she whispered.
The woman sitting across from her reached over and touched her shoulder. "Are you alright, hun?"
Kate nodded absently. She was waiting for the near impossible: Maria to wake up.
Jay walked for awhile in a direction. He was going home but decided to go a long way.
When they arrived at the hospital, the staff quickly rushed Maria off, leaving Kate helpless in the waiting room. She sat and put her elbow on her knees and her head in her hands.
Jay thought as he walked. He thought wondering if Kate was ok. If he would be dead for staying out so late (probably not). And other random thoughts that just popped up.
"Kate?"
She jerked her head up at the sound of her name. "Director Fury."
"Is this seat taken?" he asked.
She shook her head and he promptly sat next to her.
Jay finally got home after a few more minutes. He silently walked into the lonely home and walked to his dark unlit room. He didn't bother with lights. There was no point anyway on turning them on.
Kate didn't look at him, or anyone for that matter, until he said her name again.
"Kate, you… you don't know where the escaped criminals are, do you?" he asked seriously.
"No, sir," she replied quietly, feeling the gazes of everyone else in the waiting room burning into her skin.
Jay collapsed onto his bed and picked up a book. It was some fantasy story that he had been reading in his free time.
"now this is going to hurt but we have to get that bullet put alright?" Harley told brink. He nodded and closed his eyes in pain "puddin can you pass me the tweezers? Thank you." Brink looked away "3…2…1"
"AAAAAHHHHHHH-" he heard a clicking noise as his mother put the bullet in the tin. "There." She wrapped the wound in gauze and smiled
Joker walked over to assess the job and nodded "how are you feeling?"
"Painful but better"
He let out a sigh in releif "we never thanked you for getting us out of Arkham, thank you." He said with a smile
After what seemed like an eternity, Kate was allowed back to see her mother. She looked weak against the plain white sheets, and it made Kate even more worried. She'd always seen her mother as strong and invincible. Kate sat at her bedside and took her hand once again. "Mom?" Maria remained motionless.
Jay fell asleep reading his book. He didn't have to turn off any lights because he was only using the light from the street light outside.
Vanessa got in her car and sped to where the three were.
Kate shakily pulled her phone out of her pocket and pulled up her contacts.
Jay slept for awhile in his bed, still dressed in regular clothes.
