Okay so say you have two fictional characters from, I dunno, Harry Potter. We'll use Ron and Hermione for this example
Now, you really like the idea of Ron and Hermione being a couple. You want them to be together. In fact, you want them to be together so much you become obsessed with them. When they finally become a couple canonically, you are overjoyed. You may even run screaming around your house for a bit.
That's what shipping is. In this example, the ship was Romione. Ship names are made of the two people's names mashed together. Your favorite ship is called your OTP–One True Pairing.
