April glanced up at him, a warmth spreading through her chest. "I didn't think you'd want me to," she admitted quietly, averting her eyes once more.
April glanced up at him, a warmth spreading through her chest. "I didn't think you'd want me to," she admitted quietly, averting her eyes once more.
He let his hands fall from his neck. "April, what makes you say that?" Cruz's hardy demeanor softened. To her it was normal. But overall, this softer side of him was very precious–he was afraid of having his trust broken, so his display of vulnerabilities toward her was the greatest show of trust.
April gave a self-conscious shrug. "I don't know.. I thought maybe you were a bit tired of me since we've spent all week together and would want some time to yourself."
His voice softened. "Ms. Bale, I will never grow tired of you.."
Something stirred in April's chest– it was really something special to catch glimpses of Cruz's softer side. "I just– sorry."
He padded over to her and wrapped his arms around the woman. Cruz never loved anyone more than this..
April leaned into the warm embrace, smiling slightly, "I love you…"
"Te amo," he returned the affecrion in his native language, pressing a kiss just above her eyebrow.
Standing on her tip-toes, she planted a kiss to his lips. "Thank you.."
He smiled a little wider. "I have.. Room in my dresser, if you want to leave some clothes.."
"That– That sounds perfect. Thank you, Cruz." April pulled away, gathering her clothing in her arms.
"Mm.. de nada." He called back lovingly. Cruz brushed his own arm, watching her go, and sighed softly to himself. Some stroke of luck to end up with her..
April carefully hung up each article of clothing, a ridiculous grin on her face.
He settled his hands into his pants pockets. "I'll go get Athena saddled up,"
"I'll be right there," she called, "Almost finished."
"Okay love," he nodded briskly, and trailed out. A chilly wind made his skin crawl with goosebumps and a prompt shiver; snowflakes trailed down in light quantities that only left a brief dust on the dull grass. It would be at least another month or so, hopefully, til the snow actually stuck.
April finished with the wardrobe and hurried after, grabbing her coat and slipping out the door.
Cruz pulled the saddle over Athena's back, after replenishing her food so she ate up a little before they left.
April approached the two, reaching out a hand to stroke the mare’s nose.
Cruz buckled everything in place. "M'lady," he offered a hand to help hoist her up.
She smiled, taking the hand and swinging up onto Athena's back,
He made sure she was stable. With a hoist of his arms, he pulled himself up onto the saddle behind April, and wrapped his arms around her to take the reigns.
April couldn't resist craning her head to peck his cheek, grinning.
"Mm, hey," he chirped affectionately, leading the ebony horse from the barn into the stinging chill of late fall.
She leaned back into him, before leaning back into Athena's neck.
Athena's hooves crunched on the frost-carpeted ground, at least until they got onto dirt road. Luckily his sister didn't live too far.
