Pierre followed after, rolling his sore shoulders. The night air was surprisingly cool, soothing on his sweaty skin, and he sighed with something akin to content.
Cruz began his relaxed saunter towards the handful of men, whom laughed cordially at Francis, who was telling them a story.
The leftmost man, a shirtless, muscled fellow with skin a dark tan and black wavy hair, lifted a hand in greeting when he caught sight of them, grinning. “Cruz and the thunder eater!” he called, a heavy French accent mingling with his words.
"Ayy, ¿Qué pasa?" He laughed, sitting down beside him.
"Hi, Pierre!" The kid chirped happily. His eye shined every time he saw Pierre, likea dog when its owner comes home.
Pierre smiled, leaning down to ruffle the kid’s hair. “Hey, Francis,” he greeted, raising his eyes to the other two. “Hey, Geoffrey. Louis, long time no see!”
Louis chuckled, completely dwarfing Francis, who was seated right next to him. Truth be told, he dwarfed all of them, even Cruz. “And where have you been?”
"Making out," Cruz replied with his signature sarcasm.
Francis burst into a bout of his girlish laughter.
André fell off his chair in one swift move, yelping with surprise. He looked down at her, then burst into laughter.
Jane’s eyes widened and she laughed as well. “Are… Are you okay?” she giggled.
"A-aouhh, Yeah," he groaned, rubbing his hindquarter, "That's gonna leave a bruise."
Pierre groaned loudly, raising his eyes to the heavens as if begging the Lord to give him patience. “Recovering from getting hit by lightning and making out are not the same thing.”
Louse raised a dark eyebrow. “But you were staying with a woman, non?”
"A-aouhh, Yeah," he groaned, rubbing his hindquarter, "That's gonna leave a bruise."
“The mighty Lieutenant,” she teased.
Cruz's eyes lit up at the opportunity to embarrass his friend. "Yeah, and he doesn't have the guts to get with her even when she's laying herself on a platter!"
The kid stifled a snort of laughter.
"Mighty. Hah!" He chortled. "You, my dear, have reduced me to the likes of a docile rabbit."
Cruz's eyes lit up at the opportunity to embarrass his friend. "Yeah, and he doesn't have the guts to get with her even when she's laying herself on a platter!"
The kid stifled a snort of laughter.
“She is not!” he protested, just as Louis roared with laughter. The tall, muscled man clapped him on the back hard enough to rattle his teeth. “L’amour, c’est un…. how you say.. is a fickle thing, my friend. Get her while you can.”
"Mighty. Hah!" He chortled. "You, my dear, have reduced me to the likes of a docile rabbit."
She felt herself blush, something very few people could get her to do. “My sir, you flatter me.”
"See, thats what I keep trying to tell him," Cruz snorted, tossing a twig into the fire.
"Maybe you should just ask," Francis commented. "I mean.. Women can't be that complicated,"
Geoffrey laughed loudly. "You have a lot to learn, kid,"
"Mm." He smiled admiringly up at Jane.
"Mm." He smiled admiringly up at Jane.
She blushed harder. “What?” she asked, her usually confident voice quiet.
Pierre pushed his hair out of his forehead, leaving his hand atop his head for a second. “I’m telling you guys, she has no feelings for me, and I have none for her.” The last part would have been a convincing lie to anyone who didn’t know him as well as the three more experienced soldiers present.
"You are.. Beautiful," he smiled.
"Listen," Geoffrey chimed in before Cruz. "Could it hurt to ask her?"
Pierre sighed in exasperation, though he couldn’t deny his amusement. “She doesn’t.. she’s a closed book. Doesn’t like to open up. It wouldn’t work.”
"Bet," Geoffrey commented. "I'll buy your dinner for the next month if you ask her,"
Francis grinned with amusement.
Pierre shook his head, chewing anxiously on his bottom lip. “She’d never say.”
"Just ask," Geoffrey spoke. "She doesn't have to answer, I just wanna see how this goes,"
"What would you say if I was in your position?" Cruz commented.
"You are.. Beautiful," he smiled.
Jane looked away. She was smiling softly, but her gaze was hollow. The last time someone told her she was beautiful…
He sat up and touched her face for a moment. "Dinner's getting cold.."
She looked back at him when he touched her. “So it is,” she whispered.
He sat back in his chair, took her hand to kiss and reassure her. "Thank you for coming,"
“It is my pleasure, my sir,” she replied, watching him through observant eyes.
His lips held a smile trembling with excitement while he began to eat.
