"You what?" The Roegadyn woman stared at her daughter, blinking in disbelief.

"I want to become an adventurer." Tyr repeated. "I'm old enough, I can be responsible and not take on anything I think is too dangerous. And we could use the coin."

"Enough!" Her father roared, setting his book aside and getting up to stand between his wife and daughter. "Tyr, you are not going to become an adventurer. It isn't a life to glorify, it's one full of pain and suffering and dying young. You're a bright girl, you have so much ahead of you like going to Sharlayan next year to study."

"But I can still-"

"No. Not in the meantime, not ever, not as long as you are under my roof. If you don't like it then you can leave, but if you turn your back on this family I will no longer have a daughter. Understand?"

"Yes."

"Yes what?"

"Yes sir."

"Good. Now, the tour leaves soon but I think it's best you stay here. Take some time to think about your future and what it is you really want. And when we get back I will inquire about getting you into the Studium sooner. Deal?"

"Fine." Tyr rolled her eyes, frowning as her father tousled her hair.

While that conversation had been happening her mother had the foresight to go round up her brothers, the pair rushing out to the front room with smiles and clearly eager to go.

"Your sister isn't feeling well so she'll be staying home." Her father motioned, rolling his own eyes as the twin boys let out a groan.

"Seriously sis?" One asked, walking over and poking Tyr's cheek.

"Yes, seriously. I was just telling dad I nearly barfed on his shoes so I'm staying put. But I'm fine, promise! So go have fun for me okay?" Tyr smiled, pushing her brother away with a laugh.

"Okay, we'll make sure to bring you back some souvenirs!" The other waved, heading out the door with her parents not far behind. After a moment Tyr was alone, sighing as she stepped away from the front door.

"I'm going to be an adventurer, you'll see. I don't care if you don't like it." She growled, stomping upstairs to her room and flopping onto her bed and eventually drifting off to an uneasy sleep.

She woke only a few hours later as a crack of thunder shook the house. The weather had been predicted to be clear all day and yet...Tyr frowned as the storm outside continued to rage, the clouds so dark and heavy that despite the early afternoon hour she couldn't see the house across the way. Worry crept in; would her family be okay? They had all gone out on one of the many boat tours through the Rhotano Sea and were not set to return until closer to dinner time, but the storm had rolled in from nowhere and Tyr feared the ship had gone down.

Yet the Roegadyn woman could do nothing but wait, as even attempting to open the front door had led to the front entrance being nearly flooded. Tyr had actually slipped trying to shut it, barely able to push the door shut again despite her size - a testament to the storm's ferocity. Its like had not been seen in many years, adding to the stress of the situation. All she could do was wait. Too anxious to sleep, or find something to distract herself with, Tyr just stared out the window that faced the ocean and prayed.

"Navigator, please let them be safe. Please..."

Whispered words, perhaps unheard by the Gods but Tyr could always hope. She had to hold on to hope.

Hours passed and the storm showed no sign of abating. Linkshell calls were going around, families and friends checking in to make sure they were okay and just as devestated by the news that Tyr's family had been out to sea when the weather turned foul. They all assumed the worst, offering Tyr words to console her. Empty words of grief, loss, and pain.

As soon as things became little more than a drizzle Tyr raced for the harbor, joining the throng of people just like her searching for their loved ones. So many ships had been out since it was set to be a clear day...

"The Sea Strider has been contacted, the captain reports only minor injuries and no loss of life. The Redwater Jewel has been contacted, the ship itself went down but her crew are safe and were picked up by the Midnight Eclipse, also with a safe crew." A Roegadyn man stood at the front of the crowd, reading off a list. "The Starlight Voyager, Ocean Whisper, Deepwater Horizon, and Winds of Fate are still missing and uncontacted, but no wreckage has been found either and search crews are still looking. The Astral Wind, Dawn's Herald, and Tempest's Fury are lost, wreckage was found and all crew and passengers have been accounted for as deceased." He stopped a moment, letting the crowd murmur amongst themselves as the news settled in. Cries rang out, mixing with the sound of waves breaking on the sea wall and gulls crying over head, tears falling like the rains that had claimed so many lives.

Tyr found herself numb. The Dawn's Herald was an all too familiar name, and the realization that her family died shook her. Sixteen and she was now without anyone, her whole world turned upside down by a few hours of bad weather and an argument with her parents. Someone in the crowd noticed and tried to comfort her, but Tyr couldn't hear what they were saying. She just stood, staring out into the ocean, before turning to walk away. Down to the other side of the pier, all the way out...throwing herself into the cold waters beyond.

Would that a riptide had taken her, or that she had simply drowned. Those who rushed to try and dive in after her were stopped; it was too dangerous, and if she wanted to give herself to the arms of the Navigator then that was her choice. And as she sunk into the darkness, Tyr closed her eyes. She accepted death, welcomed it even, because it meant being with her family again.

The feeling of sunlight warming her skin woke her some hours later, washed up on the shore like a beached whale. Battered and bleeding, soaked and freezing, but alive. The sun moving towards the horizon told her it was early evening, and some hours had passed since she cast herself from the docks. Something she shouldn't have survived.

"The will of the Navigator..." Tyr whispered to herself, her voice cracked and sputtering.

With great effort she pulled herself up, shivering as she took one step at a time away from the beach. Eventually back home, collapsing on the floor as soon as the front door was closed.

The dawn woke her, sore from sleeping on the floor and still sporting the injuries from being tossed about at sea but otherwise none the worse for wear.

"I'll see a healer later." Tyr murmured, moving to start packing. A bag with some clothes and any other survival gear she had, and then a once over of the entire house that took the entire day.

Most of what belonged to her brothers and parents was boxed up and set aside, though Tyr took a few small tokens and mementos and all the important documentation her parents kept. The documents were sealed in an envelope along with a letter explaining what had happened and sent off to an uncle on her mother's side - Tyr knew the man existed and had met him a few times, and she knew at least her mother kept in touch with him fairly frequently. So the house and anything left in it were his, and once the letter was sent Tyr left Vylbrand for the Shroud.

She was going to be an adventurer, and now no one stood in her way - even if it wasn't the way she had wanted it to happen.
