The Cross close

They found the source of the presence. Although it was said to be a Shrine ready to reactivate, they found something else. The source had apparently been the cross of Jesus Christ. This made John question what the Seraphim were doing with the cross and what purpose it served. This led to the conclusion that the Seraphim could theoretically be angels.
