According to Reddit: https://amp.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/bu5bq2/what_is_the_deal_with_the_backrooms_meme/

It started out with a sandbox video game that involved a series of empty rooms. You could travel by "nocliping" the game camera (zooming out of the whole scene and then zooming in somewhere else.

And then somebody on discussion forums asked for "unnerving pictures" or unsettling pictures, abd somebody posted one of an empty office cubicle in real life, joking that you might "noclip" out of reality if you stayed there too long.

After that, it became a meme, and an SCP setting, and a popular theme for creepypastas (short horrors).

In rare dreams I have in which I know that I'm dreaming, I call that sort of travel or scene-switching "lensing" because it's like adjusting a microscope to see things better… everything blurs, and then everything clears. If I travel in dreams by initiating a "false awakening" then that's what I call it. I suppose "noclip" is the same general idea.

I don't know if this is cultivating symptoms that I really should tell my therapist about, but in some meditations I start to get the sense that everything physical and "real" is…it starts to feel like all like set pieces of balsa wood hammered together and painted by a high school drama club, like everything is meant to mean something more or other than it is, and be accepted as real when it isn't.

Of course it is real, but I sometimes feel like it isn't—like maybe this whole world in waking life is a backroom.

Or maybe that the "backstage" of the backroom that I describe, is the actual backroom, just this inky neutral black void of nothing that's behind all the high school drama club props. But there's also this…something…of collective belief and agreement between people, that's maybe like the mycelium chemical internet between trees…? (The wood-wide-web, there's articles about it.)

If one person agrees that the chair that had armrests on it, positioned on the short side of a long table, and facing the door, is prestigious somehow and so should be reserved for somebody whose job it is to tell us what to do, and another person's agrees, then it's going to be easier for me to believe it too…even if, when I go back to 'real life is a high school drama club spring play' mindset, it's just another chair. With void inside and behind it as its essence, and that's only part of a bigger all-consuming void. It's not hungry or insidious, it doesn't look back at you when you look at it, there's no cause for despair with the void, the void is just…there, and neutral.
