Hey! In my current plot one of the main players is a prince from an icey kingdom. Within his culture there are incredibly strict rules surrounding who can interact with him (no eye contact, no touching, only use his title etc) and he's grown up quite isolated. He enjoys music and art whilst also being a keen swordsman that loves to read about and study battle strategy. He's existed for many months now but I can't seem to find a name that suits him. If you guys know any names that might fit him (or that you like) I would love to hear them!

Because it's a fantasy setting, you can…have a cat walk across your keyboard or something, and then adjust the syllables that you like, after asking around to make sure it doesn't mean something rude in a language that you're not fluent in.

I'd probably do a George R. R. Martin and change the spelling of conventional real-world names (Cersei instead of Circe, Oberyn instead of Oberon, Arya instead of Aria… Melisandre like he squished together Melissa and Alexander)—although, a friend of mine pointed out that there didn't seem to be regional naming conventions in that world, and it would have helped make the setting seem bigger if there were.

So, I went to the website BehindTheName(dot)com and adjusted the search engine settings there so it would show me names that mean "snow". I liked Tushar because the origin language is Sanskrit, but the Basque and Welsh names meaning snow are my second and third favorites. I'm not so "ah-ha" about Edurne but the description helpfully provided that the root word for this Basque name is from the word elur which I do like and does still mean snow…and Welsh names that mean snow have the syllables eira in it.

So that's the process I have before making a list of possible names for an Ice Prince:

  • Snow or Snowfort (a tad campy, especially if he's descended from King Avalanche and Queen Glacier or something, but I don't mind campy fantasy)
  • Dussar (thinking of what would happen if the name Tushar were brought outside the language of origin, like how Welsh Gwynhwyffar becomes French Guinevere)
  • Eleir (squishing together elements of Basque and Welsh names)

All I can think of when I see the words "Ice Kingdom" is Wings of Fire. It's all I can think of for a lot of things. Elly's comment on the queen and king name thing didn't help either.

If you like them, the names I can immediately think of when seeing "Ice prince" are:

Winter, Arctic and Hailstorm

All of the names come from Wings of Fire characters, but I doubt you could get in trouble for something as simple as a name. Besides, only one of them is actually a prince in the book. And he dies. I swear, if you pick the name of the dead prince and he dies I will go berserk.

I swear I didn't have a clue what Wings of Fire even was, but I just now looked up the name of the Queen there and bwaha!

Haelston sounds cool, pun fully intended. Or Arcticus/Articus, but that means "North" or possibly "bear" according to the Etymonline website.
