Tetanus lays dormant for 3-21 days (ave. 8 days) before it becomes deadly. The further the injury from the central nervous system, the longer the period of days. The shorter the dormant period, the deadlier the injury becomes.

Signs and symptoms begin gradually and then progressively worsen over two weeks.
