Ok so, I recently came up with a new story and I really really wanna write more about it, but the problem is for some reason I can't come up with anything?? Like I have the overall tone(ish), a few character names and personalities, and a vague idea for a conflict. How do I get my creative juices flowing?

It could be that…

  1. You need to specify the idea of the conflict so that you can specify how this conflict is resolved. This requires plotting rather than premise, the premise being "here's an issue the character has," but plot is more "this is why the character is motivated to deal with this issue, and so-and-so methods of dealing with the issue" so a motivated character does something.

  2. Concept too broad? To begin with a big idea about the story like "it's going to be this panoramic epic fantasy adventure", "the themes will revolutionize philosophy about the human condition", or "it's going to have a twist in the plot that will be talked about for generations and set new standards for spoiler warnings" all of that can really get in the way off writing out one sentence in front of the other… because you can't tell within two sentences whether or not your story is any of those big things, and so sometimes the part of your brain that judges these subconscious expectations will start to drain your motivation and then sabotage you only because the first two sentences don't have any tone.

  3. Other subconscious lack of cooperation. I say "cooperation" because it might in a way not only be you writing it, but parts of you including your rote experience with simply typing out what you mean, and your subconscious way of prioritizing what you mean to say, and life experience that fills in motivations or objects in the world that you didn't worldbuild. If there's a wrench in any of those, then art block or writer's block occurs (such as forgetting a crucial vocabulary word).

And if there's a contradiction between any of those (for example, plot needs to happen in a way that's out-of-character for your main) or a discomfort for writing outside of what you've researched (so, drawing a blank on how to begin it what happens next because you simply don't know) then "writer's block" can also happen. It can happen because of anything from lack of nourishment or lack of sleep, to not having the right vibe—although I think writers who simply push through it, more likely found a way to solve what was blocking them and they didn't know it, so it feels like simply pushing through a problem or block, when really they're doing a bunch of other subconscious stuff that works equally well.

I hope this helps!
