Scenes and surroundings shifted so soon upon materializing. A forest-a real one; or at least what you think a real forest would look like, but before you could even reconsider the appearance of it, it shifts. A parking garage- an empty one. A clean pre-modernist building. A natural town square, clean and empty, other than the people. A small room with a table and a light. Someone's house. And yet, you always end up at this house, don't you? What are you supposed to do now?
You peek around the corner as if you're hiding behind a wall. You see them, but they don't see you. One in particular. The only one you recognize, at least, the only one you know for sure you recognize. The rest are too blurry, but they seem almost painfully familiar.
They turn their heads to face you. One speaks.
But you never hear what they say. The alarm that grips your bliss and slams it back into reality never goes off at the same time every day, but you wake up in a bed every time, so you already have a lot to be grateful for. Though your vision is blurry, you can tell it's no longer morning. It doesn't matter; you went to sleep late last night, so you got a healthy amount of sleep; at least, you think you did. When you find your glasses and put them on, the gentle glow of the clock reads 3:15 P.M.
Of course, it's raining today; it rains every day, but only seldom does it actually flood. Most of the time it's just sprinkling. At this point you've given up in investing in umbrellas; they're too poorly and cheaply made that buying a new one every two weeks is just a waste of money that you barely have. Instead, you throw on a simple lightweight coat and some rain boots, stuffing your work shoes into your backpack. Soft thunder rolls around you, alerting a dog next door in your apartment. You've heard that dog's bark every day but you've never actually seen him; you wonder if there's anyone that lives in that apartment other than the dog. As you grab a quick breakfast bar on your way out, you give your potted plant a suspicious gaze.
"Do you need to be watered today? Or would you rather I just leave the window open for the rain to feed you?" The leaves of your plant sway gently in response to your rhetorical question. Owning a plant oftentimes made people look at you like you're some sort of hippie, but it's the least you could do to avoid some sort of lung disease. Nevermind, you only have fifteen minutes until your shift starts at work, and it's about a ten-minute walk.
As you step out into the hallway of the apartment, you see someone walking into the vacant apartment door. He looked new; not like the landlord or some sort of official. He looked like a new tenant. As you finish locking your door, you try to introduce yourself, but as soon as you begin speaking, he shuffles inside and closes the door.
The lock clicks from the inside.
Weird.
You reach the stairs and make your way down, passing by Harmony on your way out. She looked exhausted, letting her feathered winged arms drag against each step.
"Long day at work?" You remark, causing Harmony to realize there was another person there. She nodded gravely, sighing.
"You'd think someone that enters a nature store would do so with good intentions, but most people just ask me passive-aggressive questions about why I care about plants."
Harmony gifted you the potted plant that you have because you were one of the few people that don't make fun of her interest in nature. Actually, she's had to give you a few, because the first one didn't get enough sun. The second one withered from air pollution. Harmony gave you a plant that didn't need as much sun and can last all year. It remains in your home to this day.
"Invest in an entry fee. That's what everyone else does to avoid assholish teenagers."
Harmony sighed again and shrugged haphazardly.
"The day will come, Jenny. The Hexa will bring us back to the way the world is supposed to be. Then they'll see why I've preserved these plants for so long."
You were still on the fence about that whole belief, so you simply nodded, wished Harmony a good rest, and continued your way outside.
As you exit, the wet concrete mirrors the endless neon lights and glowing signs that lit up the city. You never bothered to look up anymore; all you'd see were flying cars and smoke. And you didn't want to get rain in your eyes anyway. You start heading West, toward Kai's Kaleidoscope, the dive bar that you work at. Kai himself was Kaiholo, your boss, but also your childhood friend. Ever since High School, he's been your good friend, and he pays just above minimum wage, which is actually significantly better than any other job you could find, especially since Kai treats you well. You pass by several different people. You have the same route every day, and some of the people you know. You happen to run into your landlord, Myst, a shifter with a fierce attitude but a heart of gold. She's a friend of Harmony's, who convinced Myst to offer you a discount for your place. Myst seems to care about her tenants, talking to them about more than just rent, and offering help whenever she can, and sometimes even if she can't. You've never felt unsafe in the apartment because Myst is the best judge of character, and would turn down a potential tenant if she felt they were shady. Nevertheless, she couldn't protect you outside of her apartment, and often you'd walk home feeling uneasy. After you finish catching up with Myst, you continue on your way, cutting the time you have left to clock in thin.
You step into the bar, noticing a few customers already, despite it being almost 3:30. A feline looking official sat in a booth with a canine looking professor, discussing something probably important. A quiet, brooding robotic man sat in the corner alone, writing something in a book and occasionally taking a sip of his fruity looking margarita. You step behind the bar, taking a moment to kick off your boots and put on your work shoes. Kaiholo walks up to you, mixing a drink.
"Right on the dot, I'm impressed. You sleep well this morning?"
Even though Kaiholo couldn't see, he somehow always knew what time it was. He gets a lot of credit for never messing up a drink, and it gets him tips.
"Hey, Kai," You began, exhaling the energy burned from the walk to work out of your system. "I think I did."
Kaiholo merely nodded, not bothering to ask about your dream this time. He usually asks about your dreams, deeply interested in hearing them, but today he didn't. That almost seemed weird, but you shrug it off. He turns away to pour the drink into the cup, sending it to the customer, some lanky blue-skinned boy with bright hair, you could only see the back of him.
Work was the same as usual, each customer more wildly different in appearance than the last, the numerous stories of battle, personal work experiences, or simply a hopeful wish in a better future. You mixed drinks and served them to the talkative customers until the day had completely ended.
The entire time, Kaiholo seemed off. It started to worry you. Kaiholo is a pretty strange character to begin with; and you'd know, you're pretty close with him, but this is off even for him.
As the two of you close up, you decide to ask what's wrong.
"I never got to ask if you slept well, Kai." You mutter, looking over at him.
You've never seen him with his blindfold off, except for one time, you accidentally walked in on him in the break room. He heard you come in and turned to face the wall before you could even process what you saw, but that's the closest you've gotten to see him without it on. As you look over at him, you watched him tighten the knot on the blindfold.
"I guess you could say I did. I think it was just the awakening that threw me off today."
You blink your eyes, unsure of what that could mean. Does someone else live with him? You've been to his place before several times, and haven't seen anyone else, not even a pet.
"Is it cool if I walk you home tonight?"
Having grown up together, you and Kaiholo have been to each other's places many times, and even stayed the night. Of course, it was equal to a simple sleepover, and it mostly happens when one of you need the company.
Tonight, however, Kaiholo simply shakes his head.
"That'd be more for your sake, don't you think?"
His remark sends your gaze down to the floor. What was that supposed to mean?
But you weren't going to give up that easily, were you?
When you finished closing, you decided to let Kai leave first; you decided to follow him home. For the first few minutes, he seemed fine, walking home no problem.
And then he made a different turn.
This isn't the way to his house, where is he going? You're almost struggling to follow him as he dips into several turns. You reach an especially trashy part of town, littered with trash bags, the smell of cigarette smoke and weed, a bunch of bandit-looking figures roaming the streets, and little to no light at all.
What is Kaiholo doing in a place like this?
He enters into a run-down building, definitely abandoned and almost falling apart. Confused and incredibly intrigued, you wait until he'd gotten far enough into the building before you enter as well, following the sound of footsteps.
As you turn the corner, you see a hallway, just barely catching the end of Kaiholo entering a particular room. You tiptoe your way down the hall, reaching the doorway. You peak around the corner, hiding behind the wall. You see them, but they don't see you. A group of different characters; aside from Kaiholo, there's a shady, tired-looking man with dark hair tied in a bun, standing next to a scruffy blond man in a red shirt. The two of them were talking to a cyborg looking man, with orange hair. Another cyborg, with dark hair and freckles, was talking to that lanky boy with light-colored hair. He had glasses, too. Kaiholo approached the three men and spoke a few words. You examine the room they were in; there were a few chairs, a table, a corkboard, and a makeshift bar. The corkboard had several papers and sticky notes pinned to it, like a cliche conspiracy theory. You couldn't read what was on the papers from where you stood, but you suddenly felt five pairs of eyes on you.

@icecubes

Deja vu…
I flinch to move away from sight, but I know that it is already too late. I know there's no way for me to play it off cooly. My heart is beating out of my chest and anxiety follows each pump of blood, spreading through my body. Kai is definitely going to kill me.
Despite the sheer fear, I step into the doorway. "I got curious," I mutter shamefully, eyeing everyone, but mostly keeping my eyes to the ground, or on Kai.

@AloeVera groupMentallyImInACottage

You notice a few of the guys turn back to Kai, either speaking or listening to the other speak. Kaiholo responds, but you can't hear what any of them say. They all watch Kai start making his way towards you. Kaiholo's demeanor seemed offensive, the way he walked toward you like you did something wrong made you nervous, but as soon as you were in earshot of his whispers, he begins speaking firmly, but with a hint of care.
"Are you alright? Did something happen? Nobody hurt you, right?"

@icecubes

I mess around with my sweaty hands, anticipating Kai to be angry. I watch him walk up to me, but he simply asks whether I am okay or not. Laughing nervously, I reassure him quietly, "If I was in trouble, I probably would've just barged right into the room. I'm fine, but a little hurt that I have no idea what you're doing here or why. Who are these people?" I try to ignore the tension surrounding the air.

@AloeVera groupMentallyImInACottage

Kaiholo didn't look convinced that you were fine at first, but as you started asking questions, his tension relieved. He placed a soft hand on your should and gestured you into the room.
"Okay, okay, calm down, come sit down, I'll explain."
As you enter the room, the guys try to act like they weren't watching the whole thing transpire, but their evasive casual poses gave them away immediately. As you sit, Kaiholo introduces you.
"This is a group of people I often meet up with to talk and discuss…things." The pause at the end sort of gave away what thing he meant. Kaiholo, along with half of the population, believed that the current state of the world; the neon lights and the pollution and the constant rain; wasn't how the world was supposed to be. He believed that Hexa, some unknown being, was going to come to restore the world to the way it's meant to be. He didn't talk about it too much around you, knowing that you weren't too sure of your stance on the whole matter, but there's really no avoiding it right now, is there?
Kaiholo continues, gesturing to each member of the group, starting with the blue-skinned boy.
"This is Yuki, His unquenchable thirst to find the answers to things brought him here."
He points to the tired man in a bun. "That's Jean," then to the blond freckled man, "And that's Anubis. They came together. Anubis already had the belief, and contacted me about it. I convinced him to meet me in person, and he brought Jean with him."
He then points to the orange-haired cyborg. "That's Roger. and Eddie," dark-haired cyborg, "also arrived together. They both have a deep hope in a better world, and they come here for that reassurance."
All of the boys awkwardly waved a hand at you as they were named. Jean raised his beer bottle. Yuki adjusted his glasses.

@icecubes

My eyes rest on each man he waves to. They're all extremely different in appearance, and even demeanor. Each one sat differently, with different posture. I ponder how Kai remembers where they're all sitting.
"Hi, hello," I say to them. "Um, I'm Jenny. I work for Kai, but he's mainly my best friend. Well, unless you guys already knew that." man they kinda all cute as hell holy shit mm
I run my fingers through my hair. "Well, so what's all this on the table?"

@AloeVera groupMentallyImInACottage

As you approach the table, Anubis grabs a folder and holds it down behind his leg. Kaiholo follows you and points in the general direction, motioning for someone to come assist him. Yuki scrambles to the table as Kaiholo speaks.
"This is all of our work and research. Any evidence we could find that supports the idea of a better future. Nature spots, little pieces of haven, things like that."
As Yuki takes his place on the other side of you, he grabs a particular folder, opening it to reveal photographs of places you've only heard of from movies or stories. In the photograph was a waterfall, surrounded by rocks and moss, reaching into a little pond area. You could almost see the water moving.
Kaiholo continues.
"Your neighboring tenant, Harmony, she helped provide us with some evidence of nature spots. We invited her to join us, but she said she had too much on her plate, so she helped us with what she had."

@icecubes

My fingers brush the photograph, and a tinge of longing plagues my mind. Something about the way the plants were overgrown around the water, the serenity and peace of the scene, it all felt too unreal.
"Where are these places? How did she even find them?" I question in amazement. My eyes flicker towards Anubis. I noticed.

@AloeVera groupMentallyImInACottage

Eddie steps up to you, grabbing a photo to look at it for a moment.
"She said it's her secret to keep. Whatever that means." He turns the photo around to show you. "This one's my favorite." In the photo was a street path, lined with fire-lit lanterns and red and orange leaves scattered about the streets. In the photo was a figure with an umbrella, leaning against one of the lanterns.
"It's just so warm."

@icecubes

"Maybe she's scared it'll get taken away from her if too many people know," I suggest. Eddie flips the small photo paper around to reveal the scene.
It is in great contrast with the previous one, but makes me feel just as sentimental. I lean in closer to take a better look at the details, the way the colors just pop out, but gentley on the eyes, unlike the harshness of the neon signs on the gray buildings everywhere else. I turn my head towards Eddie. "That is fucking beautiful. I just, these places are real? But… how…? Why are we stuck here then? What happened to us?" As I fire each question, I look at each person, excited and confused at the same time. They can't be serious…

@AloeVera groupMentallyImInACottage

Eddie places the photos back into the folder, setting it back on the table.
"Industrialism." Jean retorts, looking to the ground before looking back up at you. Though dark and heavy, Jean's eyes held a gentle gaze when he looked at you.
Yuki reaches around you to grab a box, reaching his hand inside to pull out small packets of seeds.
"We find real grass patches to plant trees and other various plants. The only problem is they can't survive for very long."
Yuki mutters, staring at the packet of seeds.
Roger sighs heavily as Yuki spoke. "I just wish there was more we could do."

@icecubes

I ask to see the seeds. They're various different sizes and shapes. Poor seeds deserved soil and water, and fresh air.
"I feel like industrialism is past the point of return though," I remark. I set the bag of seeds back into Yuki's hands. "I wish I studied environmental science more… Do you all believe in Hexa?"

@AloeVera groupMentallyImInACottage

Jean half chuckles at your question, earning a stomping sound from Anubis and Jean covering the chuckle by clearing his throat. Though Kaiholo wore a blindfold, you could feel the disappointed glare from the way he turned his head in their direction.
"In a manner of speaking, yeah. We all believe in Hexa." Kaiholo explains. Yuki adds to his statement.
"I'm not one for naive faith, but we have quite a lot of damning evidence to support Hexa's explicit existence. Plus, the truth is inevitably the most difficult to accept, right?"
Yuki looks at you with intent, almost as if he were studying you.

@icecubes

Jean's sneering makes me instinctively roll my eyes. He felt rather egotistical in a sense - all I asked was a simple, normal question.
I squint my eyes at Yuki. "And what's the evidence? Not all truths are hard truths," I challenge. Opening the folder once more, I admire the photos.

@AloeVera groupMentallyImInACottage

Yuki grins, the excitement to dive further into detail evident on his face so much so that he almost forgot the overall idea that he's explaining.
"For starters, how the grand idea of Hexa manifested into the unique minds of dear believers; one person did not invent just any god and spread the idea to everyone, no, hundreds of individuals all over the world at around the identical time somehow collectively experienced a vision. They saw the world the proper way it traditionally used to be, the way it's naturally supposed to be, and they wrote down everything they saw."
Yuki picked up a second folder, pulling out a few papers. On the papers contained handwriting of different people's quotes, all describing different nature spots.
"They've never seen these photos, and yet describes these scenes in perfect detail."
Roger steps forward, not really caring if Yuki is finished or not.
"Tomorrow morning we're going to plant more trees, if you'd like to join us."

@icecubes

I jump up in my seat. The thought of feeling the earthy dirt in my hands, and not dirt from a measly pot, fills me with determination wonder and longing. Imagining trees just, all over the world, one at every corner, real ones that I could feel within the grasp of my fingertips. I miss the color green. Can you miss something you've never seen?
"Okay, okay, wait, hold that thought," I raise a hand to Roger. "So, people had visions and they happened to be exactly picturing these nature spots. How do we know they didn't just see the places themselves, like Harmony, and pulled some kind of bullshit?"

@AloeVera groupMentallyImInACottage

Yuki nodded silently, adjusting his glasses.
"These specified descriptions were only written hundreds of years ago. The heavenly nature spots were only recently discovered within a decade."
"Either way," Eddie gestures to the table, gazing at it while he spoke before looking back at you, "what we're researching right now is an alibi for the prophets' lives."
Kaiholo chimed in. "If we know exactly where the prophets were at every moment in their lifetime, we can know for sure that there's no way they could have seen the nature spots. This specific kind of detail is definitely for the more skeptical, but it's been reinforcing our case even more."

@icecubes

I whip my head to Kai and proceed to gently hit whoever's next to me, which happens to be Eddie, out of excitement. "Are you guys saying we know where all these spots are? Other than Harmony's place? Could we go to any them right now? Are they close by?" I spew out questions like a waterfall. Every aspect of life is so bland, that this just perks me up. I wonder why Kai never told me about these people, or his plans. I need to ask him in private later.

@AloeVera groupMentallyImInACottage

Eddie gasps lightly at your excited reaction, but when he realizes you meant no harm, he doesn't defend himself.
"We know a few, but they're not easy to get to." Roger begins, sticking his hands into his pockets, looking to the floor. "It'd take days."
You could tell Kaiholo was grinning to himself; he knew you. And, you may not know the group very well yet, but you could tell Kaiholo chose his next words for more reasons than one.
"Your vacation days have been stacking up, Jen. Just something for you to consider."
Eddie and Yuki smirked as they looked at you with anticipated intent.

@icecubes

I whisper a light "sorry" to Eddie, accompanied with an apology touch on his arm. i just do this ok.
Kai continued talking, hinting at something that just about threw me off the edge. My hands get tangled together with excitement, as the adventurous soul inside started to bubble up in hope. "We have to. We have to, Kai, we literally have to, like, we- oh my god," I stumble over my words. "Maybe we can find a place to plant trees on the way! It'd be two jobs in one. Where would we even go first?"
I know I won't be able to sleep tonight.

@AloeVera groupMentallyImInACottage

Kaiholo allows an excited and pure grin to escape his expression as he listens to you gradually grow more excited.
Roger smiles softly as you bubble over, a faint chuckle rushing through his breath as Jean nods.
"That's a good idea, two birds in one stone. We could take a different route back home to double the tree planting."
Kaiholo lowers his head to the ground quickly, shaking his head in a facetious, disappointing manner. "Yeah, I'm sure Harmony has enough seeds."
"She definitely does." Eddie responds, suspiciously quickly and even moreso defensively. Everyone looks at Eddie for a moment before he continues. "She's good with conversation," He explains as they continue.
"Though to maintain hope we must perceive beauty in the broken, but there is no harm in improving our circumstances." Yuki mutters to himself, but loud enough for everyone to hear his vocabulary.

@icecubes

"Not gonna lie, I have no idea what you just said," I say. My brain takes too much time to process sentences, so I simply did not process his sentence. It's faster this way! "So, it's a plan then. Who's gonna pick the place…? Vacation tomorrow, Kai?" I plead to him. My words run out of my mouth without pause.
I waited my whole life for adventure, for this moment. It got so lonely in the apartment and the bar, and I love Kai, but I needed something wild in my life. He knew that too, unbelievable he would hide this from me.
