@thehobbit

Okay, so I have high-functioning autism and have worked with lots of other people with autism and other disabilities. I am happy to critique characters, explain things like meltdowns and shutdowns, and answer any other questions you may have.

@GoodThingGoing group

(Psst I can help too if you want. Although I honestly have no clue if things occuring on a daily basis are from my anxiety, Aspergers, or depression, so….yeah.)

@thehobbit

(hey there. Yeah, I would like that, any help is good help. its good to have multiple opinions on stuff. )
(that makes sense, in addition to the Autism, I have Fibromyalgia and I also have CP. Sometimes i'm not even sure what pain is from what. eg: I sometimes can't tell if something is happening due to sensory overload, if i'm sick, or if i'm just having a bad pain day cause all I can tell is that I feel awful.)

@GoodThingGoing group

I have normal-person emotions. Myself personally, I cry when I'm angry. I'm very good at concealing my emotions, and I do not cry in public 99% of the time. I have a hard time relating to others, though.

@GoodThingGoing group

I do. Just usually I can't hecking stop my smart mouth from snarking. I also have a fairly dark sense of humor and make death and depression jokes, mostly about myself.
Reading social cues can be hard, but I can't tell if that's anxiety or Aspergers, honestly.

@thehobbit

I have watched the Good Doctor . I love it! I find it to be a good representation of how sometimes people with autism feel emotions so very strongly and have very little idea of how to express them. Keep in mind however that autism is a scale, some of us can read social cues better than, or worse than, others and some of us are better at interpreting both our emotions or others emotions. for example, I personally have a decent time understanding others emotions but if you asked me how I feel it would be easier for me to show you some songs to represent it than to identify it or put words to it. Just remember, Every person with autism is different.
One thing that I would want to point out is that on the Good Doctor, they make him super smart for the show, and I want to make it clear that not everyone is like that, in fact only (if i even remember correctly) about 1% of autistics are savant (really super smart), but honestly I think that the show does a really good job of representing autism.

@thehobbit

tldr: the Good Doctor did the good but all autistics are different :) aka: if you've mt one person with Autism, you've met one person with Autism.

@WriteOutofTime

I know i'm super late to this post, but would either of you be interested in reading over my character w/ ASD? I'd love to hear your opinions on him.

@thehobbit

I would be interested in looking at/ reading over your character too.
sorry im late to respond, im on a break from school so time isnt really a thing im aware of right now.

@thehobbit

I honestly love the character. when reading through the description it kinda sounded like reading about myself.

something I would recommend is to have levels of meltdown/ shutdown.

maybe have Javi fiddle with his ring sometimes, just as a stim… just because but like have it be more prominent or slightly more fiddling, like taking the ring off to play with it when really stressed and then running away?????

There are definitely some things that cause immediate shutdown but, at least for me, it can also come in stages and be mildly preventable if escape is available. for example maybe the other characters notice him fiddling more and have him leave the situation.

overall I really like him. you did really good. he seemed like a smol bean character that I would love. good job.

I have a question related to Autism myself lol, you may or may not be able to answer but I thought id ask anyway.
first heres the background, Im a college student pursuing some sort of career working with other disabled people as I find it easiest to connect with them. one of my options is being an ABA therapist. ive heard a lot of negative things on the internet about ABA therapy and was wondering if you could tell me what it's like? ive never had ABA therapy before as I was diagnosed at 18 and I want to make sure im not attempting to enter a career where I would be doing harm. I want to know why ABA therapy is so hated.
I have researched
nothing is giving me specifics
im confused and need advice
