Black Iron Vultures

Stardust hated handcuffs.

If one asked the pillager of realms the reason why, at best they would receive a look of stony silence that would give the Snake Hair a run for her money, or just a reason for running frankly.

At worst? Well, the thief was sure that it anyone but Rose had asked him, twice, they would have received an icicle through that intrusive interrogator that had once been flopping around in the individual’s mouth for their troubles.

Maybe two, it would really depend on how foul his mood was that day.

But the point remained that Rose had asked, twice. Now Dusty was many things (one of which was frowning at how she now giggled whenever using that pet name for him since his less than stellar performance at “So you think you can dodge?”) but more than that he was secretive.

It wasn’t even so much that he didn’t trust Rose, no the issue here wasn't that.

The issue at hand was that the thief had spent his life ensuring that his weaknesses were hidden, that those traitorous taboos were tucked away in the tormented corners of his tamped thoughts.

Yet she just wouldn’t let it go and it was as she watched him with a feline intensity that he finally deemed he would try and answer her, only for her.

“Nightmares”

“Oh…Stardust”

He watched as her eyes, those beautiful orbs that could become as dull and guarded as his own had been for years softened slightly. The way her voice shook, if only for a second, but it was enough. It was an unspoken understanding between the two that while the time together had at first seemed forced and temporary in the turbulent escape from Kaiser that at the very least, now more than ever they understood one another.

She was silent and he forced himself in keeping her gaze, eyes locked as the corners of her magnificent mouth granted him a swift smile, silent encouragement for continuing and so, for her, he did.

“You are the executioner of the Fire Realm Rose”

The female nodded, once. It was not a slow pained motion but acceptance, in understanding what and who she was, then she prepared herself for the slew of shrapnel that came after that sort of statement. Usually, it consisted of bribery. Of desperate slighted lover’s eager in sending another into the Graveyard beyond. Of blood oaths and loss, of many, so many that would deem her a prophet of power if she would just take a life for them, Stardust however, as he often did, once again surprised her.

“Are you marked?”

That made her look at him quizzically.

“Did the Infernal Flame Emperor mark you?”

Something in her eyes recoiled at that, at seeing the softness in him there and it took all of her considerable willpower in nodding, once. The action swift and regretful, there would be no encore for it, no reminding herself of her own pain, not while she was nursing his, she would not let him deflect the situation onto her own secrets while his were finally squirming towards the surface of honesty.

Yet he had not missed that nod and she was willing in wagering anything that he wouldn’t miss the chance in asking about it later.

“Well, that’s something we have in common then”

“What do you mean?”

The thief sighed, a long drawn out action and for a moment Rose was sure that was all she would get from him today. Not that this confession hadn’t been a stepping stone for him she just, wished she could do more for him. So it was with a flash of surprise and then gradual gratitude as those extravagant eyes met her own, once he was situated on the bed they shared together, that she listened while he answered her query.

“Well…I take it the Infernal Flame Emperor has mentioned me before, right?”

“Yes, always as a threat”

His eyes flickered for a moment and Rose could have sworn she saw the briefest showing of sadness in them before he continued.

“Always?”

“Always Stardust”

“Well…that burns a little”

She frowned, at this point the lady of flames knew her bed mate well enough in knowing that almost always, he didn’t say things without a reason and that only left…

“He burnt you?”

The male’s only response was silence.

“Stop doing that”

“Mm, doing what Rose?”

“Looking for all the world like you have no comment”

“What if I don’t?”

That got a laugh out of her at least, a brush of warmth in the room bridging the air that carried unspoken words between them. Moments past and she smiled as his posture relaxed, only slightly, but it was enough, for now.

“Stardust, do you really expect that I’ll believe you when you say you have “no comment” on anything?”

There it was, that roguish grin that cut through the chains of doubt and deceit of her fiery heart and had brought them together.

“No Rose, no I don’t, I know you know me better than that”

“So why do you hate handcuffs Stardust?”

There was silence for a while, a silence that pervaded the room like a cold fog, leeching the light and goodness from all it touched as his eyes darkened. Then slowly, as if in a daze of despair she heard him above the pounding of her own heart and her dread was soon equipped with anguish.

“Black Iron”

“Black Iron?”

A nod.

“You know Kotetsu?”

“You mean the legendary blacksmith of the Fire Realm, I know him but that doesn’t explain…”

“You remember that Great Angus you skewered?”

She swallowed past a lump in her throat before meeting his disturbed gaze, nodding slowly in horrified understanding.

“Roasted over fire, skewered by a fragment of the same Woodborg Inpachi it killed…I told you that”

“I listened”

“Stardust…I would call that sweet, if it wasn’t such a dire conversation, now as you were saying?”

“Right…well who were the ones who created the darker series of his line Rose?”

“…The Dark Realm, more specifically the Dark Worlds”

“And you saw how the Woodborg Inpachi was no longer on fire?”

“Because…it wasn’t deemed necessary”

The male shrugged, eyes downcast before shivering at the memories that still haunted him.

“Because it nullified elements, magical or natural, it shackled power and made it a joke Rose”

“…Darkworld Shackles”

“…That’s right”

“You mean…you were…”

“Well I wouldn’t quite say burned at the stake”

That comment eclipsed the space between them, as the press of the executioner's body against the tortured thief’s overlaid in a union of limbs and warmth, his head on her shoulder as her hands traced slow showings of shared sorrow down his back with her protective caresses.

“Stardust…what happened?”

“I was a child and had begun my small acts of rebellion against my third father”

The ghost of a smile crossed her features.

“Small?”

“Alright, fine I may have replaced his morning WatchDog with something…less suited for waking him up politely”

A giggle met his ears before he sighed in her arms, quietly content in just hearing her slow sensual showing of amusement.

“What in all of the Fire Realm could you have picked Stardust?”

The male didn’t miss a beat in answering, his tone somewhere between nostalgic and proud.

“An Abaki”

“You…you brought a club-wielding fiend of fire into his room, as an alarm clock?”

“Yes”

“Hahaha, oh wow! So did it wake him up?”

“Oh yeah totally woke him up, frankly its demonic rendition of “Sex on Fire” was moving, there was only one issue with that”

“That he was recovering from an all-night orgy and didn’t appreciate the reminder of his charred crotch?”

“..You know Rose it’s somewhat less fun when you spoil my big reveal”

“Sorry Dusty, so what happened next?”

“…Oh nothing for a while at least, it was only when I defeated the blacksmith in combat then challenged The Emperor that he took action himself”

“Wait…you defeated the master blacksmith in combat?!”

“I mean in his defence it was right after the “all night orgy” as you put it and he was as wasted as you were under the Emperor’s service”

“Stardust?”

“Yes, Rose?”

“Did you just fluff your own male ego while giving me a heartfelt compliment?”

A soft smile as their eyes met before a murmured.

“Yes, yes I did Rose”

“Wow, you really can teach an old dog new tricks, I’m proud of us”

“Us?”

“Sorry, you”

“Actually…I sort of like us”

“You…do?”

“Yeah…I do”

Silence filled the space for a while, yet unlike before this was a soft soothing silence as they beheld each other in this new way for the first time, finally, the executioner spoke.

“That…that sounds nice. But what happened when the Emperor challenged you?”

“Oh that…he deemed my arrogance and misconduct a grave insult and, well I’d lift my shirt for you but I’m sort of trapped in a warm embrace right now”

“I don’t hear you complaining”

“I’m not. I’m really, really not”

It was as those gentle fingers brushed his cheek slowly, reverently with such warmth unlike that of his queen that the male simply smiled, knowing deep down, that he was home.

“So, the scorch mark that you yelled at me for looking at when I walked in on you in the shower…”

“Yeah…that’s the one. I was held down and handcuffed, I wasn’t even a threat and he knew that…the handcuffs were there because I started middle fingering him very passionately once my voice gave out from screaming”

“But…but…you were a child”

A shrug.

“And he is an Emperor”

“I’m sorry”

“Don’t be, if anything it makes me feel better about stealing you away from him”

“Oh who said you stole me, thief?

A smile, a true contented smile between the two was the only further response as thief and executioner, closed the gap between them and finally, after days of dancing around it kissed.
