Tobias babbled loudly in return, slapping his hands on the squishy sauce in return. Little flecks of it went everywhere.

Lilah glanced back at her son and chuckled before heading into the kitchen. She sighed as she leaned against the counter, finally out of sight from the “guests.” What were they even doing here? Uninvited and unannounced, no less…

The atmosphere in the dining room she left behind was less than warm. Cameron kept his head down and he chewed quietly, as Tobias screamed and giggled happily away in his chair.

“So, how has it been with a new baby, so far, Cameron?” Lilah’s mother asked, trying to break the awkward silence.

Her daughter was still in the kitchen, grabbing a rag to clean up Tobias’ mess as well as a bowl of more applesauce and a spoon.

Cameron glanced up at Lilah’s mother and shrugged. “It’s fun but tiring, I guess.” He looked back down and away, hastily eating a forkful of pancake so he didn’t need to talk.

The queen nodded, sighing through her nose as she looked down at the plate in front of her. She wished that she could have a better relationship with her daughter and son-in-law, but it didn’t seem like that was possible. If only she had supported them sooner…

Lilah reappeared with the supplies she had gathered and quickly cleaned up her son’s mess. She brought the rag back to the kitchen and rinsed itnoff before hanging it up so that it would dry. After making her way back to the dining room, she took a seat beside Tobias.

“How is everything? Cam makes the best pancakes,” she said, trying to lighten the atmosphere in the room.

Cameron had to stop himself from breathing a sigh of relief when Lilah reentered the room. He glanced up at her, then back down at his plate.

Lady Metzler nodded, smiling. “He’s quite the cook.” The sentence was brief and awkward.

“That he is,” Lilah agreed, returning the nod as she spooned out some applesauce and held it to Tobias’ little mouth. “He’s been great with cooking while I take care of Tobias.”

Tobias blew a tiny raspberry, waving his tiny fists around. He took a spoonful of applesauce, finally, babbling happily.
Cameron glanced up at her again, smiling a bit.

Lilah chuckled at Tobias’ bubbling and fed him another spoonful of applesauce.

“Well… I’m glad to see that you’re doing well. All of you,” her mother said after finishing her plate of food.

Tobias stuck out his tongue at the spoon, babbling louder over the attempted conversation. He giggled loudly and took the spoon in his tiny hands.

Lilah smiled at him, trying to get him to actually eat his food instead of playing with it.

Tobias blew another faint raspberry, giggling. He seemed to be having a lot of fun.

"Well, I think I should be going, now. I don't want to keep my husband waiting on me. Thank you for the breakfast, Cameron. It was delicious," Lilah's mother said with a small but genuine smile as she stood. "I'm glad you are all doing well, and I hope you'll let me see you soon?"

Lilah sighed faintly and looked over at her mom with a smile that matched. "Of course. You're welcome anytime as long as you let us know ahead of time. Right, Cam?"

Cameron busied himself with finishing up his food and collecting the dishware. He hurried into the kitchen, only pausing to say,
“Yep! Absolutely!”

The queen's smile wavered a bit, and she bowed her head slightly. "Thank you. That means a lot to me. I hope to see you all soon," she said as she gathered her things and made her way out of the apartment.

Lady Metzler watched Cameron disappear with a tiny sigh. She bowed slightly to Lilah, grinned a little at Tobias and grabbed her things before leaving behind Lilah’s mother.

Lilah chewed on her lip as she tried to get Tobias to eat his food. What had just happened? Why had they just shown up out of the blue, and then left as suddenly as they'd come?

Cameron washed the dishes, but he was deep in thought. Out of all people, why did his mother come? They had gone so fast, only to suddenly leave without even a word about their lives outside of Tobias. Well, their lives did mainly consist of their son, now, but…

Lilah didn't want to think about it any longer. It bothered and confused her, making her head spin. This whole thing was just too weird…

Cameron shook his head, hastily setting the bleach away before he sprayed the poor plate down with the chemical. He washed it off well before setting it to dry.

To distract herself from it all, Lilah turned her focus back on Tobias, who seemed to enjoy spraying her with applesauce spit… She sighed and wiped her face off before trying to get him to eat more.

Tobias babbled up at her loudly, waving his fists around. He cooed loudly into the air, taking the applesauce only to spit it out again.

"Are you playing with me? Or are you just not hungry?" Lilah wondered as she scooped the mush from his face with the spoon and tried to feed it to him again.

Tobias bleh-ed loudly in the face of the spoon, taking it and promptly spitting it out again. He probably wasn’t hungry.

Lilah hummed and scooped it off of his face again. “Okay, then I guess you’re not hungry… I suppose I’ll just have to feed you later, then,” she said as she packed the rest of the food away.

Tobias giggled loudly, smacking his hands on the clean surface of the eat-desk thing. He seemed to be very happy today. He was usually quieter.

(You mean high chair?)

Lilah grinned at him and booped his nose before heading into the kitchen to grab a washcloth for his face. She passed Cameron and kissed his cheek gently. “Thank you for dealing with them calmly,” she murmured.

Cameron glanced down at her, smiling a little. “You’re welcome. It was so random. But… hm…”

“‘But’ what?” Lilah asked softly, looking up at him.
