"That's terrible.." Phoebe whispered. "I– I'm sorry. What– what were they like?"
"That's terrible.." Phoebe whispered. "I– I'm sorry. What– what were they like?"
Elide cracked a small smile, “Luke was… protective to say the least. Always the jokester. Mum, dad… they were kind, loving… always there when I needed.”
“They sound amazing,” Phoebe said sincerely. “I’m sure they were great people.”
“They were…” Elide sighed and only then realised how close she was to Phoebe and her face heated a little, not quite knowing why.
Phoebe did her best to ignore the barest hint of a blush that was suddenly dusting Elide’s cheeks. “So.. are you adopted, then? If I’m being pushy you can tell me—“
“It’s fine, Phoebe,” Elide gave her friends hand a reassuring squeeze, “And yeah, I’m adopted… Giselle is American and that’s why we had to move over here… Damien is British like me, though.”
Phoebe cursed her stupid heart for fluttering when Elide squeezed her hand. "Do you miss Britain? Do you have any adopted siblings?"
“I don’t have any adopted siblings, no,” Elide bit her lip for a moment, “I… In some ways, yes, I do miss England but in other ways I don’t… I wouldn’t have met you if we’d stayed.”
The remark made Phoebe smile ridiculously wide. “I’m happy to have met you too, Elide.”
Elide looked up at Phoebe and smiled back. She took in her friends face and how beautiful she was and realised she probably looked a mess from crying.
Phoebe barely resisted the urge to wipe the tears from Elide’s gorgeous face, grabbing a box of tissues from the sink and handing it to her.
“Thanks…” Elide muttered, pulling out a few tissues and wiping at her eyes and face, “God I’m a mess.”
A beautiful mess.
Phoebe shook her head gently. “No, you’re not. By a long shot.”
Elide huffed a laugh, “Oh I definitely am. Trust me on that.”
“Not as big of a mess as me,” Phoebe said, trying to joke around to ease the atmosphere. You put the hot in hot mess…
Elide bumped Phoebe with another laugh, “Never. We’re both messes, who about that?”
Phoebe laughed lightly. “Sure.” But you’re the hot part and I’m the mess part. Oh, how she wished that she could say that out loud… but she couldn’t.
“I’m glad we’re in agreement.” Elide smiled and stood up, holding out her hand for Phoeve to take, “Dance with me, out in the party.”
Phoebe froze up for a split second, before her face split open into a huge smile. She took the hand, standing. “Of course.”
Elide grinned and led them back into the party, looking over her shoulder at Phoebe with a huge smile.
This time Phoebe couldn’t keep her eyes off Elide, the way her eyes sparkled in the flashing lights, the way her hair spilled over over shoulders, the way her dress rolled smoothly over her hips… she grinned, pulling the other girl to her and moving her feel to the rhythm of the music.
Elide let out a laugh that was barely audible over the loud music, all negative feelings from a few moments ago forgotten. She draped her arms over Phoebe’s shoulders, pulling them closer as they danced together with everyone else on the crowds dance floor.
A tiny sound of surprise slipped out from Phoebe’s lips, her cheeks flushing pink, but her eyes were glimmering with happiness. Dancing Queen by ABBA was playing on the speakers, which didn’t help with the tingles that were suddenly racing up her arms.
Elide grinned at the surprise that came from Phoebe, and the pink on her cheeks. As the song played on, Elide sang along to it, happy and content and laughing about nothing in particular.
Phoebe tentatively slung her arms around Elide’s waist, laughing and singing along badly. People twirled and jumped around them, neon lights flashing in the dim room, and she felt pure happiness coursing through her.
Elide giggled and kept singing until the endnote of the song where she let out a laugh. She grinned at Phoebe, glad that they were back to the catefree attitude that had a few days ago.
Phoebe laughed, grabbing hold of Elide’s right hand and twirling her around. God, she’s beautiful…
Elide laughed at the spin and made sure to not fall over her feet. She did the same back to Phoebe, her eyes twinkling.
Phoebe’s heel slipped whe she was twirling, sending her crashing into Elide. “Sorry, sorry!” She laughed, cheeks blazing.
Elide giggled and helped correct Phoebe, “It’s fine.” She wrapped her arms around her friends neck again with another laugh.
