Heat rushed to Phoebe’s face. Licking her lips anxiously, her eyes flickered down the their intertwined hands. “I’m fine.”
Heat rushed to Phoebe’s face. Licking her lips anxiously, her eyes flickered down the their intertwined hands. “I’m fine.”
“No, no your not. You need to sleep.” Elide said softly, her eyes full of worry.
Phoebe shook her head again. “It’s fine, it’s not like I’ll actually fall asleep anyways. How was your day?”
“Phoebe… please. Don’t change the subject on me…” Elide bit her lip.
Phoebe looked down at her lap. “I’m fine, I promise.” The lie came out smoothly, easily. It wasn’t like she could tell Elide everything, that would drive her new friend away. She had do stay quiet.
Elide sighed through her nose and let go of Phoebe’s hands, “We should sleep…”
Phoebe fought back her rising disappointment, pulling away with a fake but convincing smile. “If you’d like.” She pulled back the covers, making sure her back was against the wall so that she didn’t feel tempted to… cuddle.
Elide nodded and slipped under the covers, rolling onto her side and looking up st Phoebe still a little worried, “You sure you’re okay?” She asked quietly, “Sorry I’m being pushy…”
“You’re not, don’t worry. And I’m fine.” Phoebe smiled, lying again. “How are you?” Almost against her will, she shifted imperceptibly closer.
Elide shrugged a shoulder, “Sleepy… you?” She did her best to stifle a yawn.
Phoebe found herself smiling, cheeks dimpling. “I’m fine. Sleep, if you’re tired.”
“But I wanna stay awake with you…” Elide whined, moving a little closer to Phoebe.
Phoebe went red, suddenly thankful for the darkness. She cleared her throat, one hand accidentally brushing Elaine’s stomach. “Oh.” was all she could say, licking her parched lips.
“O-Oh what?” Elide stuttered out, a heat rising to her cheeks.
“N-nothing. Nevermind. Sorry.” Phoebe looked at the ceiling for a second, trying to collect herself. She knew firsthand how easily a crush could form, and this was bad. “How was your day?”
“It was school so boring…” Elide muttered, her eyes falling shut, “But becoming friends with you was the highlight…”
“Definitely..” Phoebe whispered, afraid of startling her. She seemed ready to fall asleep, and as much as she wanted to stay awake with Elide, she could tell her friend was tired.
“Mhm… you’re great…” Elide didn’t even realise the words slipped from her as she soon fell asleep. In her sleep, she curled into Phoebe.
Phoebe froze completely, not daring to move an inch. Her breaths came out heavy, but she somehow managed to keep her cool and sanity.
It didn’t last long, Elide soon rolled over to her other side with a soft sigh in her sleep.
Disappointed in both herself and at the lack of Elide in her arms, Phoebe rolled over as well, breaths evening out.
She didn’t sleep at all that night
Elide woke up to the sun shinning onto her face. She groaned softly and rolled onto her other side, blinking her eyes open.
Phoebe’s eyes flew open as soon as she heard the slightest sound coming from Elide, trying on a sleepy smile. “G’morning. How’d you sleep?”
Elide shrugged a shoulder and rubbed at her eyes, “Alright, what about you?”
Phoebe’s mildly happy expression never faltered. “I woke up maybe twenty minutes ago, so pretty well.” She ignored the fact that there were probably prominent bags out of her eyes. “We don’t have to get up yet, it’s still 7:00am.”
Elide frowned, “I don’t think you should get up at all… you didn’t sleep well last night, did you? You have huge bags under your eyes.”
“I’m fine,” Phoebe reassured her gently. “There are always dark circles under my eyes, my mom says it’s from some sort of allergy? I dunno, I usually cover them up with makeup, but obviously I’m not wearing any now.”
(Haha liar)
Elide’s frown deepened and she sat up in the bed, sighing, “Fine. If you say so.” She didn’t believe her but didn’t want to push.
“Mm.” Phoebe stayed lying down, too weighed down from sleep deprivation to sit quite yet. “Ugh, school.”
“I really don’t wanna go…” Elide muttered, stretching her back and arms out.
