Alice got to her feet. "I don't need help. I can get by fine on my own, just as I was doing before. And anyway, that particular vision doesn't come often, and that's the only one that sets me off. So I'm fine."
Alice got to her feet. "I don't need help. I can get by fine on my own, just as I was doing before. And anyway, that particular vision doesn't come often, and that's the only one that sets me off. So I'm fine."
Vision— Isobel was stunned by the sudden change of character. “I— sorry if I intruded—“ She swallowed, unsure what to do.
"No intrusion." She gave her a vague smile."None at all. Just… bad memories tend to come back to me. That's what really sets me off, the memories." She let herself wander into her thoughts of Ollie, and her hand instinctively went to her stomach.
Isobel’s eyes followed Alice’s hands to her stomach. “Are you sure?” She wring her hands anxiously.
"I–" She deliberated before finishing her sentence. "I should be." She looked down at her hands, noticing she'd been clutching at her stomach. She quickly tucked her hands into her uniform pockets.
Isobel chewed on her lip. “What— is there anything I can do? To help?” She ticked a lock of hair behind her hair, brow creased with intense worry.
Alice kept silent a moment. Could she be fully honest Isobel already? She opened her mouth to speak, then closed it.
Then finally, "No. Not for now."
Isobel nodded, looking away for a moment. She was torn, should she call 911 or respect Alice’s wishes? It was a never-ending cycle. “I—“ she checked her watch. “I have to run for class— sorry—“
Alice nodded slowly. "Sure, yeah. Get to class." She smiled, honestly this time. "Thanks for the help," she added gratefully.
(g'night :) )
(Night :)
Isobel nodded. “Anytime. I’ll come by the cafe later, ‘kay?” She lifted the strap of her bag higher into her shoulder.
Alice silently nodded and retreated to the single working sink. She splashed some water on her face, and turned around to check if Isobel was still there.
Isobel was lingering at the door, not wanting to leave. After a moment, she sighed, waved goodbye, and slipped out.
Twenty minutes later she arrived on campus, her mind still occupied with Alice.
Alice watched Isobel leave the bathroom, and after settling her mind she left the bathroom and made her way to the University, arriving just on time to see Isobel stride into the building. She approached the door quietly and entered. No one stopped her.
Isobel made her way to her History of English Literature class, mind still reeling. She had half a mind to call 911, Alice had to be hallucinating, but it wasn’t her business and Alice obviously didn’t want anyone to know. Goddammit.
Alice crept through the still halls, often passing large lecture rooms from which she could hear different voices rambling on about various subjects.
She finally got to a room marked His Eng Lit and spotted Isobel in the back row.
She stopped and looked into the class: it didn't seem very interesting. A middle aged woman stood at the front of the class, gesticulating at a book on her desk.
(it's not terribly accurate to a uni but it's just to keep the plot going)
(np)
Isobel tapped the end of her pencil lightly against her chin, chewing on her lip as she printed out another neat line of notes based on what the teacher was talking about. She didn't notice the door open a crack, or the woman staring at her; her focus was directed entirely on the lesson.
Alice stood at the door for about twenty full minutes before heading back to the entrance. She wandered the building before coming to a reception desk.
"Good afternoon," she greeted calmly. "I was wondering if I could get the schedule of a specific student?"
The concierge raised an eyebrow. "may I know the name of this specific student?"
"Isobel. She's in history of English literature at the moment."
The seated woman started up at Alice. "I'm afraid you need an ID to prove your relation to access their information."
Alice smiled blandly. "Of course."
She left the building, cursing her luck. All she'd wanted was to get to know Isobel better through the classes she was taking. She leaned against a tree in front of the entrance and waited for the flood of students to signal the end of classes.
Isobel drifted out of the building along with a few others from her class, lost in thought, Her next class wasn't for another hour, and besides, she needed fresh air. She debated whether or not to go back to the coffee shop, but she figured that Alice would be on her lunch break.
Alice took cover in the foliage and watched the students walk out of the University, talking amongst each other. She made a mental note.
English Literature, first floor, 13.00 to 14.00.
She finally spotted Isobel hovering on the steps of the building.
Isobel hadn't noticed the woman staring at her yet, she was too preoccupied with rooting around in her messenger bag. Pulling out a shiny red apple, she bit into the soft skin, making her way to a bench a little way away where she could sit and enjoy her lunch– and novel, of course.
Alice watched Isobel walk to a bench and sit down to read, biting into a blood red apple. She looked very calm all of a sudden. Alice snuck closer, moving from tree to tree.
Isobel closed her eyes for a moment, letting all stressful thoughts slip away. Later, she tod each of them, a meditation technique she'd been taught a few years ago. I'll deal with you later.
A few minutes later, fully calmed, she pulled out a red-bound novel and began to read.
Alice watched Isobel read for a bit before deciding to head back to the cafe.
She got there quickly and ran into Mike at the bar.
He bit his lip. "It's a good thing you're back. We need your uniform."
Alice stopped in her tracks. "What?"
"You heard me, Alice," he said apologetically. "You're fired. You can't just go disappearing in the middle of a shift. And it's not the first time either." He turned his back to her before adding. "You can bring in the uniform tomorrow."
Shocked, Alice stumbled out into the park, a single tear falling onto her cheek. She had no job, now. No way to make money.
(oh no!)
After about a half hour of reading, Isobel found her thoughts being pulled back to Alice again. She still had thirty minutes left until class, might as well check in on her….
Sighing, she got up from her seat and made her way back to the café.
(mwahahahaha)
Alice shook her head, trying to clear her head. She just had to think straight. Easy. Just think straight. Very, very easy.
She sat down in the grass, hugging her knees, breathing deeply.
(aaaaah)
Isobel bustled into the café, glancing around for Alice.
Nowhere to be seen. Her brows drew together in worry, and she approached the man behind the counter. "Sorry, do you know where I could find Alice? I'm…. a friend."
Mike sucked on his teeth. "I don't know where she went. Cab you please make sure she brings in her uniform tomorrow? Cause she's not exactly reliable."
Isobel blinked, shock landing on her features. "Oh– she– oh." She swallowed. "I- I'll do my best."
Alice kept her eyes closed— inhaling, exhaling, inhaling. Her mind cleared up enough for rational thoughts. She lost her job: she had enough savings to get her through half a year. If she found another job within a few months she'd easily get by. In the meantime she'd find somewhere else to sleep.
