"Mm. Stupid headache." she mumbled, sitting down in a handy, nearby chair. "Yours isn't all bad either." she said. At least it didn't make her head spin witnessing it, although she did enjoy the sensation most of the time.

"Mine is a shittily painted seal. I'm pretty sure it is." Ru set it on the windowsill to dry and began rinsing off his palette and brushes. Looking at his painting, he realized that he hadn't been to the ocean for a while. The urge to throw on his seal skin and dive into the ocean was becoming a bit overpowering the more thought he gave it. Stupid selkie instincts yanking him towards the ocean. He called a servant to bring the carriage to the front of the house. "I'm going to go to the beach."
"You do that. I hate water. How long do you you think you'll be gone?" Aria asked.
"No idea." Sometimes the urge was quelled as soon as Ru got into the water and other times he had to swim around for hours until the sea let him go. Once he'd been stuck in seal form for two days, unable to leave because he kept getting pulled further and further from the shore by the ache in his heart. It was freeing, to shed his human worries and skin and be able to live freely for a few fleeting moments. "Could be a whole day."
"Hmm. Alright then, off you pop." she said. Finally, some alone time. And she knew exactly how she intended to spend it.
Ru hurried into his room, snatching the large sealskin from the chest at the foot of the bed and rushing to the carriage. The manor was only half an hour from the coast but it felt like hours. Every second he spent out of the water brought more and more discomfort until he ached. His skin felt wrong on his body, somehow too tight and too loose.
When they finally reached the coast he nearly yelled in excitement. Part of the property Ru owned in this town was a section of beach so he didn't have to worry about prying eyes as he stripped off his clothes and tossed on the sealskin. A salty breeze ran over his skin and he hopped into the ocean, finally in what felt like the proper body.
"Why hello there, darling." Rosanna said, leaning on the doorframe. "Hey." Aria replied. "So, I see that a certain someone is gone." Rosie said, a little suggestively. "Mmhm. So, what do you want to do?" Ariana asked slyly. "Well, I was thinking a game of chess, with tea and biscuits on the balcony. I'm sure there's a balcony somewhere around here." Rosanna said. "Oh, I thought you'd never ask." Ariana grinned, linking arms with her lover.
A few hours later, the two had found a balcony, and there was little chance any of the servants would see them unless they could fly, which was highly unlikely. "So, Rosanna, you have walked directly into my trap, just as I knew you would. Now you will pay the price for your carelessness." Ariana smirked. "But your trap's not sprung yet, is it? You never learn. Always go for the gloat instead of the kill." Rosanna retorted, circling the table. "Forgive me if I choose to savour the moment. The sight of your helpless figure cowering at my mercy is too sweet to be swiftly dispatched." Ariana grinned, circling around the table with her opponent. "I am not cowering, I'm standing. Do your worst, and we'll see who laughs last." Rosanna challenged. "Very well, then. Farewell, my dear Rosanna. I win!" Ariana said, capturing Rosie's king in just one simple move. "Aw, you always cheat! You didn't say I was in check!" Rosanna whined. "Technically, you weren't. There was a way out that you didn't take and I made your predicament rather obvious." she pointed out. "Well, another game?" Rosanna asked. "Actually, I had a rather different idea, if you're up to it." Ariana purred. "Aria, you know I'm not interested in, well, you know. We've talked about this." Rosanna said nervously as Ariana sat in her lap, posing seductively. "I love you, I'm just not into that sort of thing, and I want you to respect that, and know that I do love and care, that's just something I really don't do." she stammered.
Ru swam through the depths of the ocean. There were so many interesting things at the bottom of the sea floor, so many human relics lost to the sea. His internal clock told him he'd been gone for an hour- at the very least. So far he'd found several old keys, bits of wood, coins, and a few pieces of jewelry. The pull out into the heart of the sea was lessened enough that he could suppress it.
He swam from the waves and onto the shore. Once he was properly beached he let out a harsh breath and loosened the sealskin around him. From there he peeled it off and set it to the side. Water glistened in his hair and on his skin and he felt wonderful. A beach house would be a wonderful investment, these weird cravings had been picking up as of late.
After a few minutes spent watching the ocean, he pulled on his button-up shirt, grabbed the rest of his clothes from the sand, and picked up his skin. The carriage was there waiting for him by the time he meandered back. He hopped inside and hoped the seats wouldn't be ruined by all the salt water. The manor loomed into vision as they approached until finally- FINALLY- they were home.
"Get off me, Ariana. I'm not interested, and I really wish you'd respect that." Rosanna snapped, pushing Aria off her lap. "Besides, we've been at this game of chess a while, your husband is home. I don't want you and I to be found out either way." she stood up, despite Aria's whining. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a job to do. I don't get to lounge around all day like you do, you know." she stalked off, golden hair flowing behind her. Ariana let out a sigh of disappointment, but didn't retaliate to this equivalent to the silent treatment.
Ru burst inside and hurried up to his room. Everyday clothes were far too restrictive, so he didn't bother to fully redress. He threw on a too big silk sleepshirt and some boxers before restoring his sealskin. What to do now that ache wasn't tugging at his stomach?
Should he talk to Ariana? The new servant girl? Or could he just wander around and wait to run into somebody. Every part of him was thrumming with positive energy. He walked out into the halls and began wandering around, hoping he'd find somebody to talk to.
Rosanna nearly crashed into the blue haired man that her sort of secret girlfriend was married to. "I'm so sorry, your highness!" she stammered out, still flustered. "Back so soon?" she said, trying to strike up a conversation.
Ru waved his hand as if to dispel Rosie's apology. She hadn't done anything wrong and she didn't need to be scared or anything. There was no way he was going to fire her. "It's fine. I wasn't paying attention, it's partially my fault. And yeah, I'm back. Didn't take as long as I feared it might. Have you ever been to the ocean?"
"No, I've never really left my city before… well, I've never traveled much. It's not allowed. Not many things are allowed in my homeland, actually. But never mind that. It's lovely here, your highness." she bowed slightly.
That seemed very sad. Ru decided to plan a cross-country road trip so this nice girl could see the sights. He was getting the feeling that his thinking was slightly impaired by the pleasant buzz he was feeling. "I'll bring you along on a trip sometime. The manor is nowhere near the nicest thing in the kingdom." This place was nice, but it really couldn't compare to some of the other cool places Ru had been. Like the Calldor Mountains. They were so beautiful and awe-inspiring that this house seemed drab in comparison.
"I thank you for that, highness." Rosanna mumbled. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have duties to attend to." she said, shuffling off quickly.
What kind of duties? The servants had taken care to unpack and ready all the rooms of the house, the cook had been baking since mid-morning, and the gardens were looking well kept. There wasn't anything to do around the house except wait on Ariana, and Ariana should've been fine. Maybe she'd decided to explore and didn't want to be punished or something. Whatever it was, Ru wouldn't keep her from it. "Do you know where Ariana is?"
"Yes, sir. She's on the balcony down the hall, sir. Now if you'll excuse me, please." she said, and then ran off. Well, that was certainly close, in Rosanna's opinion.
"Thank you," Ru shouted at Rosie's retreating back. What could he do for the rest of the day? Obviously, he was going to tell Ariana he was home, but after that, she'd probably go off and do her own thing and he'd be all alone. He'd never really been lonely before. Back home there was always something to do or someone to talk to but here the hours stretched on for ages with nothing to fill them.
He wandered onto the balcony and greeted Ariana with a quick, "I'm back!" She looked to be sitting beside a chess table. Whoever had been playing white was stuck in checkmate.
"Hey." she said, clearing the board and resetting the pieces. "Wanna play a game of chess?" she asked.
Ru's spine straightened up when he registered what Ariana was asking. She wanted to hang out with him! Something interesting was actually going to happen- even if it was only a game. He liked chess well enough, even if he'd never gotten as invested in it as his mother. "Sure. Which side do you want to play?"
"I don't care. You pick." Ariana said, tone of voice leaking boredom.
"Cool. I'll be black." Ru snatched up his pieces and began setting up the board, deftly putting all the pieces into place. He hadn't played chess in half a year or so, but he hoped he was still decent.
"Fantastic." Ariana muttered, sotto voce. She sat down as the board was reset, and when Ru finished, she made her move.
Ru did the same, wondering what kind of strategy Ariana would take. He usually went for a very cautious approach, which wasn't always the best, but everyone played differently. It could tell you a lot about a person, now that he thought about it.
In just a few moves, Arina had taken most of Ru's pieces, including king. Her strategy was always adaptable to whatever her opponent's was, which made her always win, no matter what the contest. Survival of the fittest. "And that's a game." she said, leaning back, feet on table, gleeful.
Wow. Ru was in a little bit of awe about how quickly he'd been destroyed. His chess strategy wasn't the best, but he knew getting beat this fast was highly unusual. He wasn't to hung up about it though. Good for Ariana. She seemed really proud. "You're really good! Got any other secret skills I should know about?"
"Hmm. Well, I have double-jointed fingers?" she said, curling her fingers backwards towards the back of her hand in a way fingers normally would never, ever bend.
Ru flinched a little. It looked like Ariana had just broken all her fingers, and he absolutely hated it. His own knuckles began to ache a little in sympathy. He quietly rubbed them along his thigh, wondering how bad actually breaking your fingers would hurt. "Anything less horrific?"
"Probably not. Horrific is kinda my specialty." Ariana said, allowing her fingers to assume a normal position.
"Well, you're amazing at chess and I don't see anything particularly horrific about that." Ru had no idea what was special about him. He was pretty basic if you set aside things like magic or being a selkie- which he didn't really count because there were so many people like him.
