Lilah opened her mouth to reply, then closed it, looking away.

"What do you think it is?" she whispered without meeting his eyes.

Cameron shook his head again. "I don't know… I don't want to push boundaries with you, though. What do you think?"

"I think… I think we never actually made anything official. Not verbally, anyway," Lilah said softly.

"Should…" His voice softened again. "Should we?"

"Um… yeah?" Lilah said tentatively. "That's probably a good idea."

“So…” Cameron blinked at the ground. “Um… I… don’t know… how to… do this… but… um…”

"Just ask me a simple question," Lilah said softly.

“It’s a lot more difficult than that…” Though she was right, he was finding it wholly difficult to ask her to be his girlfriend.
“Will you.. be…” He inhaled deeply. “My grilfriend?”

Lilah smiled up at him, her eyes sparkling. "Of course I will," she murmured, moving to hug him but realizing there was a puppy in her way.

Cameron gently sat the pupper down and took her into a hug, leaning his chin on her head. “Thank you.” He smiled, feeling happier than he has in a long time.

"Thank you, boyfriend," Lilah said, the word making her lips tingle.

Cameron smiled wider. “Thank you more, girlfriend.”

"Thank you most," Lilah bantered playfully, smiling.

Cameron rocked her in place for a few moments before letting her go. “Thank you overall the most, lovely love.”

"Ugh, stahhhhp," Lilah laughed. "Don't say that ever again."

Cameron laughed too. “What, don’t like my pet name?”

Lilah stuck her tongue out. "Try again," she teased.

“Alright… hmmmmmmm…” He put his hand up to his face. “Babe? Nah, too… PDA couple-ish…”

"That's better than 'baby'," Lilah laughed. "Like, ugh. Please, anything but that."

Cameron laughed. “There’s shmoopkins if you like that.” His voice was quavering.

Lilah pursed her lips and looked up at him, hiding her amused smile.

"No, sorry… Should we google it or something?"

“Yep, googling sounds good.” He nodded quickly.

"Okay, then you google for ne and I'll google for you?" Lilah suggested.

Cameron frowned. “What if you don’t like any of mine?”

(Whee… Long, awkward conversations with my stepdad are so fun..)

"Then… We come up with our own?" Lilah said with a shrug.

Cameron shook his head. “I’ll just google some.” He grinned.

"Okay. Do you want to stay here and do it, or go to the lake?" Lilah asked.

“Let’s go to the lake.” He smiled shyly at her; he couldn’t wait to go.

"Great! Grab the puppy and let's go!" Lilah laughed, starting toward the door.

Cameron plucked up Lily, who was dozing in the heat, then jogged after Lilah. “Wait up!”
