Rupert couldn’t help but smile at Jace’s energy. He was glad that, so far, he was doing most things right. “Here it is!” Rupert announced, opening the fridge and handing Jace a pint of ice cream.
Rupert couldn’t help but smile at Jace’s energy. He was glad that, so far, he was doing most things right. “Here it is!” Rupert announced, opening the fridge and handing Jace a pint of ice cream.
Jace blinked at the pint as he took it. “Um… dis is a lot of ice cream!” He looked up at Rupert.
“You don’t have to eat all of it,” Rupert laughed, getting two spoons out of a drawer. “Just as much as you want.”
Jace looked a little stressed at that. “But it’s so much! If I eat as much as I want I’ll get in trouble!”
“No, you won’t,” Rupert said, sobering. “I promise, nothing bad will happen to you here.”
Jace gazed up at Rupert fearfully. “Are you sure?”
“Positive,” Rupert nodded. “I promise. Eat as much as you want.”
Jace nodded and took the spoon. “Okay… thank you.”
“Anytime,” Rupert smiled, taking his own pint from the fridge. “Ice cream is yummy, huh?”
Jace nodded and tried fighting the spoon into the ice cream. He fought too hard and it slipped out of his hands.
“Whoops!” Rupert caught the spoon as it fell. “We May wasn’t to wait a few minutes for it to defrost.”
Jace bent down carefully and picked up the container of ice cream. “Ye-yeah, I guess we should.”
“Yep.” Rupert handed Jace his spoon. “Don’t worry, it’s not a big deal.”
Jace sat down the container to thaw out. He shuffled nervously and spun the spoon in his hands.
There were a few minutes of silence before Rupert said, “It should be ok now.”
Jace nodded and took down the carton. It was slippery with condensation but he held fast. He dipped his spoon into the ice cream then ladeled some into his mouth.
“Do you like it?” Rupert asked before digging in to his own pint.
Jace nodded politely. The condensation was rubbing wet marks onto his sweater, making Jace shivery, but the ice cream made it very worth it.
Rupert noticed him shiver. “Ah… are you cold? I can… I can get a sweater…”
“I already have one sweater… I don’t think I need anymore… the nurses never let me have anymore than one!” He gazed up at Rupert.
“What?” Rupert said, shocked. He stood up. “Bring your ice cream, Jace. We are going shopping. There is nothing more important than a plentiful wardrobe.”
Jace blinked, feeling a little stressed again. “But sir! You shouldn’t worry about it, I like my sweater!”
“You can keep your sweater,” Rupert assured him. “But we are hoping to get more of them.”
“M-more sweaters? Are you sure?!”
“I’m positive,” Rupert said, holding out a hand to pull Jace to his feet. “I know the perfect place to shop.”
Jace took his hand and stood up. He set the pint of ice cream down and nodded. “Okay… thank-thank you, sir!”
Rupert smiled. “This way.” He led Jace to the garage, where he got into a black Cadillac-ish thing. “The driver gets off at seven, unless I pay him extra, so I’ll drive us there.”
Jace nodded. “Where do I sit, sir?”
“The backseat, probably,” Rupert suggested.
Jace nodded a second time and opened the door unsteadily. He scrambled into the seat and buckled in.
