(Sorry, I went out for ice cream.)
Madeline didn't notice Nate's roommate, she was too focused on the movie. She laughed at something, then took a bite of her pizza.
(Sorry, I went out for ice cream.)
Madeline didn't notice Nate's roommate, she was too focused on the movie. She laughed at something, then took a bite of her pizza.
(No, you're fine, you don't need to be sorry. I'm doing homework so I might be online on and off again today…)
Nate didn't notice his roommate for a few minutes until he looked over and saw Isaac. He immediately jumped and pulled his arm away from Madeline. "Isaac! What are you doing back so soon?"
(Ah, okay.)
Madeline turned and saw Isaac, and she froze at the sight of him. She could feel the heat steadily rising to her cheeks, so she looked down, trying to avoid his eyes. Ugh, why did he have to come and ruin everything?
"Um…I thought I told you I was coming back a day early." Isaac answered Nate. Nate shook his head, pausing the movie and setting his plate back on the table.
"Um, hey," Madeline said in greeting, waving a little. She looked up, trying to fight the blush on her cheeks.
"Are-are you guys together?" Isaac asked, pointing between the two of them. Nate quickly shook his head with a sigh.
"What? No! No, we've been best friends since forever," Madi explained frantically.
Not that I would mind being more…
"Yeah, we're just friends. I've known Madi since second grade. We're just best friends." Nate tried to explain.
"Right. Yeah. Exactly," Madeline agreed, nodding quickly. Maybe a little too quickly…
"Then why are you two so cuddly?" Isaac asked, thinking how that was normally what couples would do. "Are you guys trying to hide something?"
Madeline shook her head. "No, that's just what we've always done. Right, Nate?"
"Yeah-yeah. We've always been like this. Maybe you just haven't noticed or something." Nate laughed in embarrassment.
Madeline could feel her cheeks continuing to burn red, no matter how hard she tried to fight it. Why was she denying it? She totally liked him more than that… She definitely wasn't going to say it, though.
Nate was quiet for a moment. Is that really what I want though, he thought, But it doesn't matter what I want. She doesn't want to be anything more than best friends…
"Um… You know what? I just remembered that, uh, I've got… homework. Yeah, I have homework to do. I'll see you guys later," Madeline mumbled, standing.
"Oh, no. Don't leave on my account." Isaac laughed.
"Shut up Isaac. Madi, you don't have to leave if you don't want to." Nate tried to reason.
"Well, I mean… Are you sure? Don't you want to, like, hang out with your roommate or something?" Madi asked, biting her lip.
"No. I see him everyday." Nate looked over at Isaac, "He's getting annoying." He made a face at Isaac before looking back at Madeline. "Please stay for a little longer."
Madeline bit her lip and looked down for a moment. She sighed, then gave Nate a small smile. "All right. I'll stay."
"Thank you." Nate sighed in relief. He really didn't want Madeline to go home, he wasn't sure why, but he really didn't want her to leave right now. Nate shooed Isaac away and pressed play on the movie once again.
Madeline wrapped her arms around herself and sat back down. She kept more to herself this time, pulling her legs up onto the couch.
Nate noticed Madeline pull away from him a little more. He glanced over at her before grabbing another slice of pizza.
Madeline became more relaxed as the movie went on. It was easier without Isaac in the room, watching them and seeming to be judging them.
She eventually picked her plate back up and grabbed another slice of pizza, then scooted a bit closer to Nate.
Nate felt Madeline move closer to him and he glanced over at her once more with a smile. He put his plate back on the table, having finished his pizza, and relaxed back into the couch.
Madeline finished her pizza, then had no idea what to do with her hands or mouth. She bit her lip and sat on her hands, then accidentally shifted so that she was leaning against Nate again, her hands in her lap. With it being such a normal thing, she didn't even realize she'd done it.
Nate once again put his arm around Madeline without realizing it. It was so normal for them that he didn't realize he'd done it until it was too late and he didn't want to pull his arm away now, that might concern her.
Madeline let out a shaky sigh, a bit surprised. Closing her eyes, she laid her head back down on Nate's shoulder. She smiled a bit and reopened her eyes.
As Madeline relaxed into Nate more, all Nate could do was think about how good her hair smelled. With his other hand, he brushed her hair out of her face and turned back to the movie once again.
Madeline blushed slightly at Nate moving her hair, but she made no move to stop him.
Gosh dangit, girl. You're kind of pitiful like this.
Yeah, yeah… I can't help it if he's a nice guy who I've known for such a long time and have come to really like…
Nate rested his head on Madeline's, suddenly feeling very tired. His eyes opened and closed as he struggled to stay awake. I really missed our movie nights. He thought before he drifted off.
