“It sounds pretty interesting,” Jake agreed as he tugged at his bandana around his neck. He wondered if Jess was still cold, “I wish they had better heating in the bus.”
“It sounds pretty interesting,” Jake agreed as he tugged at his bandana around his neck. He wondered if Jess was still cold, “I wish they had better heating in the bus.”
"Yeah, it's pretty cold today." She rubbed her hands again in attempt to warm them, but it only worked for a few seconds.
"You can borrow my jacket if you want to," He offered as he started taking off his jacket.
"No, I'm okay," she said motioning to the jacket on her shoulders. "Jake let me borrow his. Plus, I wouldn't want you to get cold."
“Here,” Jake boldly grabbed her hands in his to warm them up, “Why are your hands always so cold,” He joked.
"It's fine, I'm used to the cold." He took off his jacket.
She laughed as he took her hands. "I don't know!" She looked over at Max as he took off his jacket. He's so sweet. "Honestly, Max, I'll be okay. The school should be warm."
"Okay then," He put his jacket beside him and looked out the window while sighing. I should probably stop trying, Jake likes her, why am I even trying in the first place?
Jess heard him sighing. "I really do appreciate it, though. It's very kind of you." She gave him a smile in hopes she hadn't made him upset.
He glanced at her and smiled back, "Oh, I was just thinking of something else." He said quickly, not wanting Jess to feel bad for him or anything.
After stopping at a few more bus stops, the bus pulled up to the school. Hundreds of kids roamed the front of the campus waiting for school to start. Jess walked through the crowd with Max and Jack following behind. Someone backed into her making her drop her books and almost knocking her over. "Sorry," she said, picking up her books.
Jake immediately kneeled down and started picking up her books for her, “I can carry these to you locker,” Jake offered.
She looked up from the ground. "I-uh-" She thought about the books that were now in his hands. Everything would be fine for him to carry. Except the journal at the bottom of the stack. She held out her arms. "No, it's okay. I just wasn't watching where I was going."
“I insist. You’re already carrying enough,” Jake replied with a gentle smile.
Max quietly stood there, waiting for Jess while glancing at the clock every so often.
I mean, it's not like he's going to look at it. He's just carrying it. She smiled back at him. "I mean, okay. Thank you." She stood up and continued into the school, heart pounding. Or let's hope so…
Jake walked diligently at her side, taking care as he carried her books.
Max quietly followed them, glancing at the clock to make sure they weren't late to class.
They made their way through the crowd until they made it to Jess's locker. "Here's mine," she said putting in the combination. She opened it seeing a sticky-note on the bottom. Not again. She acted like it wasn't there as she took the books from Jake's hands, placing all of them except the journal in. She kept that one and held it close to her chest. She turned back to Jake. "Thanks again."
Max went to his locker, putting in the combination and seeing a few sticky-notes, he ignored them and put his backpack away and took out the stuff he needed for his first class. He took out the sticky-notes and threw them away after shutting his locker.
“No problem,” Jake said with a nod, “I have to get to my own locker, but I’ll see you in homeroom.” Jake smiled at her before leaving to his own locker to put away his bags and skateboard, which was currently hanging out of Jake’s backpack.
Jess smiled as they left. She closed her locker and left for her first class. She walked into the classroom instantly regretting it. Vanessa sat at the front of the room with her boyfriend, Chad. She avoided their eyes as she took a seat. She couldn't exactly leave without them questioning her. She kept her eyes to the desk, textbook in front of her. Two sets of shoes appeared next to her. "Jessica," Vanessa said, "You seem different today. Did you actually try for your appearance?" She laughed hideously as Jess continued to look at the desk. She knew she could come up with a witty remark, something like "Doesn't seem like you 'actually try' for English" or something. But she just couldn't. Her mouth stayed closed and her eyes down.
Max quietly followed Jessica and sat in the back corner, doodling on his arm. When he saw Vanessa and Chad walking up to Jess, he quickly got up and went over to her desk. "Can't you see that she doesn't want to talk to you?" He asked, a ting of annoyance in his voice.
Jess felt relief rise to her chest as she heard Max's voice. "Whatever," Vanessa said. Jess watched their shoes slip out of the picture. She looked up at Max. "Thanks." She gave him a smile that only lasted for a few seconds. She looked back down at her desk. In the back of her mind, she couldn't help but think that Vanessa was right sometimes. She pushed the thought further back everyday until it had lodged itself in the back of her mind. She brought her notebook closer to her chest.
Jake walked into his homeroom unsuspecting of what just happened. He sat next to Jess and jested, “Hey, miss me?”
"Anytime." Max said, blushing a bit again when Jess smiled at him. He realized that his doodles on his arm were exposed along with the burn scar mark and he quickly rolled down his sleeve while walking back to his desk.
Jess saw the burn mark as Max walked away. I'll ask him later. She turned to Jake and smiled. "Not one bit," she said jokingly. She let out a little laugh.
Max sighed as he sat down at his desk and continued doodling on his arm again, making sure his burn mark wasn't visible.
Jake made mock hurt, “Watch out for those little sharp pieces on the ground, but don’t worry though, it’s just my broken heart!” But then Jake burst with laugher, his eyes alight with joy because he was talking with Jess.
Jess laughed with Jake, glancing back at Max as he seemed to be drawing on his arm. She looked back at Jake, smiling. She placed her journal on the table. "Oh, shoot, I forgot my other textbook. I'll be right back." She stood up and hurried to her locker.
