(Sorry for the wait)
A second later Luke joined him, muffling a sneeze. They were in another hallway, and all around them was the distant sounds of a manhunt sweeping the house.
"Easy does it," Luke breathed. "I hear someone coming."
Nathan silently nodded and retreated into a nearby doorway, keeping watch.
Luke took the other side, leaving the door slightly open.
A tall man with long black hair and black armor walked into view. He scanned the hallway sharply as he walked. When he was level with the boys, he paused, his eyes narrowed in suspicion.
"Who's there?" he asked quietly.
Nathan exchanged a telling look with Luke. "Don't move," he mouthed.
Luke winked in reply, flashing an annoyingly confident grin.
The man sighed and reached out, lightly brushing his fingers against the door Nathan was hiding behind. With a blur and a rush of air, the door disappeared, leaving Nathan exposed.
"State your business," the man said, "or I will send your head along with the door."
"We are to find a Maddie. A certain Vin gave us orders." Nathan tried calmly.
The man raised an eyebrow. "Vin gave you orders? He doesn't even command himself. And by 'we', do you mean yourself and the ragged youth behind me? Or are there more of you?"
Luke, who'd been trying to sneak up on the man, cursed. "It's just us, Princess. Where's Maddie and Crash?"
"And why should I tell you?" the man challenged.
Nathan shrugged. "We're not bad people. We only want to help." His gaze flitted back to Luke, egging him on.
"Unfortunately for you, I am a bad person," the man said crisply. "And I don't believe your idea of 'help' would please Mr. Blake. Now then–"
Luke sprang forward, knocking into the man with all his strength. The man grabbed Luke's arm, and there was a sound like a cough and a spray of blood. Luke yelled in pain, but didn't falter, ramming the man against the wall. The man teleported away, leaving a black hand print on the wall.
"Let's go," Luke barked, cradling his arm. It had several chunks of flesh and muscle missing from it. "Hurry, he's gonna be back soon!"
(I have to go for a bit. If Carys shows up, tell her we can meet up with Maddie anytime, unless you want anything else to happen before then)
"Luke!" Nathan growled. He took his friend's arm in his. "Luke, I'm so sorry. I'm not one to do the talking."
Luke shrugged Nathan off, his face tight with pain. "It's fine. Let's just go. Esme said Maddie would be close."
Nathan flinched away and nodded slowly. "Ok, fine, let's go." The boys set off into the hallway, scanning for open doorways or sentries.
(Carys if you wanna enter now, you could)
(Cool)
As I rounded the corner onto another set of corridors my heart skipped a beat. Nathan and Luke were checking all the doors. I couldn’t move, I was so happy but then it dawned on me that I would have to tell them the news about Crash.
Luke's head came around and when he saw you, his eyes lit up. "Mads!" He rushed over, looking you up and down. "Are you okay? I'm so glad we found you!"
“I.. I’m fine,” I had to blink a few times to make sure what I was seeing was real. “Are you okay?”
Nathan's eyes widened and he ran over to Maddie. "Oh my god, Maddie, what happened?" Without thinking, he pulled her into a hug, but quickly detached himself.
I was a little taken a back when Nathan hugged me but he quickly let go. “I met Blake’s adopted daughter, she helped me find you guys.”
"Adopted daughter? Freakish." Luke's tone was light, but you noticed that he seemed tense somehow, and you looked down to see that his arm was red with blood, although he tried to hide it. "Where's Crash? We should get out of here while we can."
I shook my head, tears already forming in my eyes. “Luke, h… he’s gone,” I turned my back to them. “It’s all my fault.” I whispered.
"Gone?" Luke's voice turned sharp. "What do you mean? What happened, Maddie?"
Nathan stumbled back. "Oh my god. We were too slow." He blinked dazedly but rapidly shook himself out of it. "We'll have time to grieve once we're out of here. We have to leave now," he said quietly.
Luke stepped forward suddenly and hugged Maddie, fiercely. "I'm sorry Mads. We should have come sooner." Turning grimly to Nathan, he nodded. "You're right. Let's just get out."
I hugged myself, “I asked Blake if he could train us, as a distraction for you both to get in. Crash faced up against one of Blake’s minions and as he was about to win, she shot him. I was tapped behind a wall of glass and couldn’t do anything. Blake wouldn’t even let me say goodbye.” I still kept my back to the boys.
Nathan looked around. "That guy'll probably be back with backup, and probably with an angry Vin. We have to find the most discreet way out of here." He looked back to Maddie and put a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Let's get you out of here."
"I think I saw a staircase leading to the ground floor a little ways back," Luke said. "We'll have to be sneaky to get through the main hall though."
