"I did that too." He said as he put a few apples slices into a pan.
"I did that too." He said as he put a few apples slices into a pan.
"They need to be in the pan by themselves for a bit so that the juice lays on the bottom of the pan, then you add the meat." She lay a piece of lean beef in the center of the pan. "That way, the beef will soak in the flavors while it cooks, and instead of just putting flavor on top, it's all throughout the meat."
He kept slicing the apples and listening.
"The honey is for extra flavor." She added some honey to simmer in the pan. "You add that last, as you don't want the sweetness to overpower the savory flavors of the meat itself. Then, you make a honey glaze with a few spices and put it on the finished meat." She started making the glaze. "You put spices on after that, since they'll stick to the honey."
He did what she did on a different pan.
"Now we wait about… five minutes for the meat to cook to medium before taking it out of the pan."
He nodded and leaned against the counter.
After roughly five minutes, Vixie took the pan off the stove and set it on a wooden board. "Voila." She removed the beef and apples from the pan, setting them neatly on a plate.
Leon did the same and chuckled, "Here's mine."
"Let's swap and see how you did." Vixie pushed her plate over to Leon and took his, tasting the beef. "Not bad. Not perfect, but I've got plenty of time to teach you. I think… maybe you added the beef too late? Some of the juice had evaporated by that point."
Leon tasted the beef on her plate, "Perfect, as always."
Vixie nodded. "I've made it a lot, and I'll probably make it a lot more. It's quite good with chicken as well, come to think of it."
Leon nodded as he took another bite.
"Pork, chicken, beef… I've even tried duck. Whatever meat's available is what I use most of the time."
"Duck?"
Vixie nodded. "I couldn't find pork, chicken, or beef, but I spotted some ducks by the pond. I knew that people ate duck sometimes, so I gave it a shot."
"Was it good?"
"Yeah, pretty good. Duck's rather like beef surprisingly, but leaner. When cooked properly, you can eliminate nearly 70% of the fat."
"That's good."
"I also tried with lamb once, that was good too… what else have I used? Deer meat is pretty good; like I said, I just have to use what I can find. Within reason, of course."
"Good, It would've been weird if you tried it with a monkey or something, I don't know."
Vixie nodded. "I doubt there's monkeys in this forest anyhow. Beef, chicken, and pork are easy enough to come by usually."
"Obviously."
"Well, none of those live in the forest, obviously. As a fox, it's simple enough to sneak off to a farm and kill something. One cow usually lasts a long time, and a chicken or two is rarely missed. Plenty of pigs as well."
"Lucky, I have to go to the market all the time."
Vixie shrugged. "Well, with me here, we aren't spending much money on food. Apples come free with the forest, and a few farms are nearby. I make sure to alternate which ones I steal from so it's not consistently the same farm."
"Makes sense."
"The owners would get suspicious and set up traps and such. Nothing I couldn't handle, of course, but I like my work to be clean, simple, and easy."
"That's cool."
"Yep." Vixie sat back down.
