(I guess I just made the assumption that Lillian was wearing a sweater… That was wrong of me…)

The smell of antiseptic soap and hospital filled Darren's nose so he pushed it further into Lillian until all he could smell was her. He sighed, "I wish we could. I really, really wish we could."

The door opened with a quiet click, "Darren, sweetie? It's time to go soon." Darren felt his fingers dig into Lillian a little harder so she couldn't pull away. "Please don't make her leave yet," Darren whispered into Lillian's neck chest.

"Darren, we really need to send her back to the waiting room," The nurse replied, her voice remained kind.

"Please," Darren whispered back, his hand fisting back into Lillian's shirt, "Please let her stay."

He turned his head and opened his eyes and met the nurse's gaze. She couldn't be older than fifty. Darren's eyes were filled with tears as his shoulders shook with a sob.

The nurse sighed, "One more minute. Your parents and other friends are going to step in for a moment, too, Darren okay? We don't have much time." The door clicked open again and this time Ryan, Belle, Cooper and Jon were visible.

Lillian kept a hold on Darren. She knew she would have to go, but she didn't want to give him up. Not now, not ever. She whispered to him, "If it was my choice I would stay with you for the whole surgery."

Darren nodded as he held back more tears, "I'd let you," She was forced to peel off of him as people entered but Darren kept a tight hold and clung to Lillian's hand.

Cooper pressed his forehead to his brother's, "I love you, Darren," Cooper had tears in his red, tired eyes. He tried to ignore Belle behind him and focus on his brother.

Jon pressed a hand to the back of Darren's freshly shaved (Cries) head, and nodded gruffly. His voice was thick but steady, "They're good doctors, Darren, damn good doctors. They're going to get rid of this thing once and for all."

Darren nodded shakily in response. Jon opened his mouth like he wanted to say something else, closed it, before opening it again, "…I love you, Darren. I never stopped."

Darren gripped his free hand over his father's wrist, "Love you, too, Dad." He turned his attention over to Ryan and Belle.

Lillian held Darren’s hand tightly. She just sat there smiling at him. Did it really take him on the verge of fucking death for everyone to get there shit together?

Belle somehow worked up a brave smile. "You got this. The pain will be excruciating. But when you want to give up, know that you've got all of us waiting here for you back home. Don't give up on us."

Darren nodded with his tear stained face. Ryan walked over with tears streaming down his own face as he rubbed Darren's buzzed head, "Don't let this get you, you're stronger than that,"

When another woman in scrubs walked through the door, he made quick work of engraining the feeling of Lillian's hand into his memory. Her fingers were warm compared to his cold ones, the space between her thumb and index finger was dry. It wasn't how it normally felt, the nerves were showing in the touch of a hand.

"We need to get going," The nurse smiled around at all of them apologetically. She was already pulling the guardrail up on the right side of the bed, kicking up the breaks on the wheels.

Darren nodded, he let go of Lillian's hand reluctantly, "Right, yeah… schedule to keep and all that…"

The nurse smiled, "They won't rush through anything, don't worry. They are very good doctors,"

Darren's mouth twitched up for a moment, but the smile didn't reach his eyes. They had barely made it a foot towards the door before he was twisting around, "Wait!" he shouted. The bed halted with a short jerk. Darren was already groping a hand out toward Lillian, "Lillian, I-I need to, I, just, I need–"

Darren's attempt at a brave face melted into an immediate response, he cried hard, "I love you. I love you a lot and I-I need you to know that, okay? B-because it's important and you're my best friend and… I-I love you. I didn't f-forget." he sobbed.

@ShadeStar

Lillian felt the tears slip down her face as her throat choked on a sob, “I know. Babe I really do know. I love you too. I love you so much. Your the best friend I could’ve ever asked for. I love you Darren Anderson.”

There was something else he wanted to say but he couldn't remember. This was the hardest he had cried since he heard the buzz of his mom's heart stop. Darren pulled his hand free as he reached out and pressed his palm over Lillian's heart. He could feel the pound of her heartbeat below his fingertips.
For a flickering moment, Darren forgot where they were and why they were there. There was only them, the pressure of his hand and the green of his eyes staring at Lillian with a flow of tears. Soon after he could no longer feel the beat he watched her get further and further away until the doors closed and she was gone.

He focused on his breathing and pretended it was hers. Breathing meant they were okay, breathing meant they were alive. All he had to do was inhale, exhale.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Inhale.

Darkness… They had knocked him out and the surgery began.

The moment those doors closed, Lillian broke down. Her hands were over her heart as the sobs shook her body. Everything’s okay. He’ll be fine. It’s okay. He’ll be fine.
