Just then there came a voice from the back of the crowd. "Psst. Hey, you two." A man was beckoning to them from a side door.

The man led them away from the building and into the maze of tents set up nearby. These tents had clearly been there awhile, and most of the soldiers loitering near them looked bored and restless. Most of them weren't even in uniform. They stared at the new recruits with little friendliness in their expressions.
"Name's Davy," their guide said casually as they walked. "Yours?"

"Uhhh, I'm Raphael," Vin added.
"Oh yeah? Good names. Nice to see some fresh faces 'round the place. We're all bored out of our minds waitin' to get killed." He waved at a group of men they passed. "And by the way, don't mind these guys. They look a bit nasty, but they just like their space, is all." He stopped at the stockade wall and felt around until he found a loose section, sliding it away. "I gotta show you something outside the wall, you can tell your friend Lennie about it later. This way."

As they started to walk into the snow-dusted forest, Vin glanced at Davy curiously. "Who are you? How did you know about us?"
"I've got ears, haven't I?" Davy replied unhelpfully. "I'm the chief of nothing and nobody in this place so don't worry–I won't tell anyone about your little escape plan." He winked cheerfully. "I would like some help with a plan of my own though, in exchange for keeping quiet."

Davy stopped as the ground dropped away sharply in front of him. "Okay, first of all, check this out." He pointed at a small valley nestled below them. At first, nothing seemed strange about the scene, but on closer inspection there seemed to be an odd, shimmering heat wave just over the tree tops. It was even stranger because of how cold it was. Davy grinned. "See that lovely glimmer? That's made by a little toy that can turn things invisible. Me an' me mates are working on something big down there, and the army doesn't know."

"Like I said, I know you three want out. I'm offering you a place in our hideout, once you get your chance. We've got a real good thing going on down there. Fresh food, warm beds, even TV sometimes. All I ask in return is that you do me a favor, and let me know if a guy named Mitch Sabrino leaves the base for any reason. You'll meet him later at the orientation, or supper. Sound fair?"

Davy's smile widened. "Great! We really appreciate it. If you have info for us, you can ask anybody in the shanty town we went through for me, and they'll rustle me up." He started off towards camp. "Now we'd better get you two back before they take role call or somethin'. Wouldn't want you to get in trouble on your first day, eh?"

"Our code name in camp is The Weather. If someone comes to you askin' for a weather report, they'll want information on Sabrino. If you don't think it's safe to talk, tell 'em the radio's broken. Alright? Pretty basic, but it works. You'll know our real name when you come join us."

They reached the fence and, after checking to make sure no one was watching, Davy slipped them back inside. "Keep me posted. Good luck with your plan, and let me know if you need any help!" With a cheery wave, he ghosted off between the tents and out of sight.
Vin took a deep breath. "Well…that was weird."

"I also hope they have more food for us soon. "I'm starv–" He stopped himself and laughed ruefully. "Sorry. I should probably explain that I kind of have an eating disorder where my metabolism works super fast. It's genetic or something, I think. Anyway, I need a lot of food all the time, especially when I'm being this active and staying in such a cold place. In the desert, at least I didn't burn energy as fast."
