Lillian felt her breath hitch, “Yeah. I miss her too.”
Lillian felt her breath hitch, “Yeah. I miss her too.”
Talia started up the engine and backed out of the spot. "Let's go to Starbucks! The home of happiness for all Americans between the ages of 11-29. What are y'all getting?" Talia asked, cheerfully. She pretended not to hear Lillian and Darren talking about Paige, it just made her stomach ache.
"I don't even know," Darren shrugged, "I haven't been there since I was like 9,"
Lillian shrugged. She’d never really been to Starbucks a lot, “I don’t know I’ll have to see.”
Talia gasped in fake apology. "I'm sorry then. 9-29."
Darren let out a small laugh, "Thank you for extending the age limit,"
Lillian let out a slight laugh. She had the ghost of a smile on her lips.
(I gtg guys. Sorry.)
(Night!)
"My pleasure," Talia replied, glancing in the rearview. "So… uh, boyfriend, girlfriend?"
Darren smiled, "Was it that obvious," His head was still on her shoulder and they were gripping each other's hand like their lives depended on it.
"I don't know. Sometimes guys and girls just like to be really close friends." Her grip on the steering wheel tightened.
Darren nodded, "True." he readjusted his head under hers. "You have a boyfriend?"
Redness pulled away from Talia's knuckles. "No."
He noticed how tense she was and decided to drop that subject, "So who called? If you don't mind me asking,"
Her shoulders arched slightly. "Wrong number."
Darren squinted, it was obviously more than that but he was in no position to pry. "Hate those,"
Talia nodded in response and her body relaxed. She checked the rearview mirror again. "How long have you been together?"
"Like 5 months, but we've been through everything together so it seems like longer," Darren looked up at Lillian who had fallen asleep. She needed her sleep.
"How'd you meet?" Talia asked, glad to have the pressure off of her.
"Musical, we both sighed up and everything kind of fell into place from there." He smiled at all the memories that flooded back.
"Nice." Talia grinned. Almost- Stop.
He didn't really know Talia that well, he wasn't sure how to advance the conversation without being weird. "How old are you?" He bit his lip, that wasn't weird, was it?
She looked in the rearview. "24."
Darren picked his head up slowly and let Lillian's fall on his shoulder as he rubbed his cramped neck, the height difference between them made it hard to stay like that for too long. "My older brother's 24," he tried to find anything they had in common to linger on.
"What's his name?"
"His name is Cooper. Cooper Anderson. You might have heard of him," Darren responded.
Talia thought for a second. "It sounds familiar…"
"He's the guy from the Free Credit Rating commercials." Darren rolled his eyes, remembering his brothers semi-fame.
Talia opened her mouth when a car pulled out in front of her suddenly from a side street. "Moron!" she shouted and honked twice. The driver held up their hand. "Yeah, yeah. Okay," Talia muttered.
Darren laughed slightly at her minor road rage. He looked at Lillian as she stirred from the sudden noise but didn't wake. She was out.
