After a minute, Bernon began to lag behind. Tanrial….I got hit, I got nicked in my shoulder back there. I gotta take a breather. Don't worry, I'll catch up to you.
Tanrial stopped and glanced back Are you sure? She asked, even through the mind connection she still sounded worried.
He ground to a halt next to her and turned so she could see. A horizontal gash cut through his fur, just behind his throat. It looked fairly deep, and was already bleeding quite a bit. It's not serious, he tried to say, but his ears were pinned back and he wasn't putting any weight on that leg. I'll just follow along behind you guys. Here, take my bag, you don't want to lose the replacement machine. He dropped it at Tanrial's feet and nudged it forward.
Mike read the situation. "If he says he's fine, he's fine. We need to get out of here, fast."
If you’re really sure she picked up the bag in her mouth, Meet back at the house in ten minutes, alright? She turned back around and ran the way she was headed.
Bernon watched them go, then started off in a slightly different direction, determined to join them as quickly as he could.
Mike slung the backpack over his shoulder and did the buckles with his free hand. "If he doesn't show up when we get there, what are you gonna do?"
Look for him, go back to the city see if they have him She slowed down just a little.
"Pretty big risk for a guy you hardly know. He gave us what we needed, and if he can't take care of himself, then he's only going to drag us down."
(I gotta go, seeya tomorrow ^^)
I don’t care. I said I’d help him master his powers and keep an eye on him for the Mother and that’s what I’m going to do She started to walk, dodging the trees.
(See ya tomorrow!)
"The Mother? Who is she?"
Tanrial mentally rolled her eyes, It’s a long story. Eyvn legend says she’s been around for centuries, helping people figure out their powers, like she did with Bernon. Other people says she’s a goddess but I doubt it
"Hm." Mike fell silent for a while. "Whatever. But if you end up going after him, I probably won't follow."
I already new that She said as she circled back around in the direction of the house.
Mike didn't answer, instead focusing on their surroundings and keeping an eye out for potential hostiles. His thoughts were alert but relaxed, running smoothly from one observation to the next.
The forest was back to it’s usual sounds. The birds had resurfaced, so had the usual small animals. No sign of the guard patrol…. or Bernon. Luckily it wasn’t far to the clearing.
When they got there, Mike jumped to the ground and checked to make sure that the contents of the backpack were secure. Then he surveyed the area. "No sign of anyone coming here. I think your pal must have–" He stopped and his eyes fixed on something at the edge of the trees on their left. "Wait, over there. I see him."
There was a pair of human legs sticking out from a tangle of ferns. They weren't moving.
Tanrial ran in her shifted form, forgetting to shift back until she was at his side, “Bernon?” She shook him slightly but he didn’t respond, “Bernon?” She said a little louder and shook him harder, “Mike, can you help me bring him inside? I might be able to help, if he’s not dead.”
He wasn’t, but he’s breathing was slow and barely visible.
Mike hesitated for a heartbeat, then went over and helped lift Bernon off the ground, checking for injuries as he did so. "There's not a lot of blood. That arrow wound wouldn't have knocked him out, unless there was tranquilizer on the tip. So it's either that, or a head injury, or something internal."
“Hopefully just a tranquilizer…” She said as she helped Mike carry him into the house, “Upstairs.” She said
Mike put his back into it, hauling Bernon up the stairs as best he could without hurting him more. "Which bed?"
“The room furthest to the back….”
"Kay." Mike dragged Bernon across the floor and heaved him onto the indicated bed. "There, he's all yours. Anything I can do to help?"
“A bowl of water would be helpful.” She quickly ran downstairs and into the cupboard of hers, trying to find the right healing potion to help.
Mike quietly followed and found a basin of clean water. He watched Tanrial carefully, his eyes on the potions and his jaw tight. "That's magic too, huh?"
“Yes, many things in this world have magic, you just have to be open to learning about them and you’ll see how much there actually is, Mike.” She pulled out a purplish liquid and another yellowish one and mixed them together.
"I know how much there is. Doesn't mean I gotta like it." He seemed about to say more, but decided against it and brought the water over for her instead.
“Take it upstairs and place it by the bed….” She muttered and grabbed a few herbs from a near by bowl.
He did so, then stood looking down at Bernon. "Hey, I think he's coming around."
Bernon was shifting slightly, his forehead wrinkled in pain. He muttered something inaudible.
Tanrial walked up the stairs with the brew she had mixed together. She picked up a cloth and started to clean the wound of dirt.
Bernon forced his eyes open and coughed. "Wha–? Oh. I'm back." He tried to sit up, but a sharp pain in his head and chest made him gasp.
“Stay there, you’ll only make the pain worse,” Tanrial dunked the clothe in the magical liquid and dabbed that on the wound, “Care to tell us what happened?”
