Lillian looked around warily. The place was a mess, paintings ripped off the walls, chairs and tables thrown everywhere. She could hear shouting from the upstairs, she was frozen in place. She couldn't do this, but she had too. But she couldn't.But she hadtoo. Butshecouldn't-
(WE GET THE JOB DONE)
Darren took her hand, "We do this together okay? I got you."
Lillian squeezed his hand and nodded, "T-together."
She slowly made her way to the basement, dragging Darren alongside her. She walked down and opened the door. As they entered Darren could see the full extent of the damage her mother had caused. Blood had dried on the walls spelling out words like slut, whore, bitch, worthless, just die already. Glass shards were littered across the floor, a large extent in a corner that had a pool of blood. It looked like Lillian's mothers rampage hadn't come here yet, this was exactly as she had left it.
Darren gasped quietly but kept a brave facade for Lillian. He let go of her hand so she could get her stuff.
Lillian shakily walked around and grabbed her stuff. Well whatever wasn't covered in blood or ripped to shreds. God the extent of her damage was larger than Lillian had thought. All of her belongings fit into a single bag, how sad was that. She walked back to Darren and grabbed his hand. The shouting had gotten louder, and closer.
"Are you ready then?" He said grabbing her hand.
Lillian bit her lip and nodded. She didn't trust herself to speak.
The two made their way back up the stairs, Darren walked beside Lillian despite the narrow staircase. He didn't let go of her hand.
Lillian was very shaky. Her legs were wobbling as they walked up the staircase. Her breathing was starting to become erratic, but she walked up the stairs. at the top she could see the figure of…. Shit. They were spotted.
"THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING HERE!" Lillian's mother shouted at them. She was holding an empty vodka bottle.
Darren repositioned himself so he was standing slightly in front of Lillian with an expression on his face like he was prepared to take a bullet for her.
Lillian was slightly tremoring behind Darren.
"I ASKED YOU FUCKERS A QUESTION!" Lillian's mother shouted as she stomped down towards them. The way she walked and talked indicated that Mrs. Phoenix was drunk.
"Just had some stuff to pick up before school ma'am," Darren said slowly pushing Lillian back down the stairs, the last thing he wanted was to be pushed down stairs.
Lillian backed down the stairs.
"AND WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO COME INTO MY FUCKING HOUSE AFTER THAT BULLSHIT YOU PULLED YESTERDAY?!" She continued marching towards them. Her grip on the bottle getting tighter where her knuckles were white. She was going to throw it at any moment.
"We were just leaving Mrs. Pheonix, we didn't mean any trouble. Just came to pick some things up," Darren repeated.
Lillian's mother pointed the bottle at him, "WELL THEN FUCK OFF BASTARD!"
She added on quieter and in a more threatening tone, "Leave the slut. She needs to be punished for thinking she can get away with this."
Lillian was shaking behind Darren. Her breathing was fast, she couldn't handle it. Not again. She looked to Darren with wide eyes. He was going to leave him with her. He should leave him with her.
"Sorry ma'am but I can't do that. I said that we were just leaving, wouldn't want to be late for school." The words seemed kind and respectful but nothing about Darren's tone or expression was nice.
Lillian let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. One she shouldn't having been holding. Her mother on the other hand became furious. She threw the bottle at them before stomping off. The bottle landed behind her and shattered. The glass shot off in all different directions.
The crash of the bottle caused Darren to instinctively hug Lillian close to himself. "You okay?" he asked still holding on.
