Irae shrugged. "A sturdy, decently weighted short sword. But I can use pretty much any type of sword." She said, following close behind, her hood up
"Nice." Charlie smiled, thinking about the weapon. "I can use a fair variety of swords too, just not the bigger, heavier ones… It's not my style and I'm not built to handle them either." she shrugged.
Irae nodded. "That's fair. What weapon is your favorite?" She asked curiously. "I'd guess… Poison tipped spear. Deals more damage then one would expect."
Charlie laughed softly and shook her head. "I'm sure you're not wrong. But, no, that's not my weapon of choice either." she explained with a smile. "I usually stick with my rapier or my daggers. I like to… dance with my enemies, if you know what I mean." she winked. "Most don't see when I grab a dagger with my tail when I'm too close to get a clear hit with my sword. I do have a bow that I usually use for hunting but if there's not a better archer in my party." she added with a shrug.
Irae nodded. "That makes sense. You'll have to teach me to shoot. Might be useful." She suggested.
“Me teach you?” Charlie blinked at the idea before nodding slowly. “Uhh, sure. I’m not an expert but I’ll do what I can.”
"You said you can hunt. Thats good enough to teach me the basics." She said, not really wanting to learn how to fight with it, just wanting to be able to get food if needed.
Charlie smiled at the assurance and shrugged. "Basics, I can handle. Now, let's get your weapons." she said, pointing out the blacksmith shop.
Irae walked in, falling silent again. She looked around at the weapons, occasionally lifting one to feel the weight. She settled on a mid-length sword, a bit long for a short sword but still able to be welded one handed, and turned to Charlie. "I like this one."
Charlie stood back and watched as Irae looked around the shop, testing different swords, looking for the right one. “Looks good.” she smiled with a small nod before turning to pay for the weapon. I know this isn't the case, and I really don't mind paying but… I almost feel like some kind of sugar baby or something. she barely managed not to giggle at the thought.
(Irae really dosen't want her to feel like that-)
Irae nodded. "Thank you again.." She muttered, low enough so the shopkeep couldn't hear her.
(Don't worry. It was mostly a joke plus how Charlie’s mind works… she is a bit of a flirt but she has no plans to hit on Irae)
“Hey, I’m glad to help you out.” Charlie smiled reassuringly. “It's part of my “job” anyway, right?” she winked, not actually viewing watching Irae as an obligation.
Irae shrugged. "According to the same people who did this to me. Dunno if you want to take orders from them." She said off-handedly
"Honestly, I'm still trying to figure out why they picked me." Charlie admitted softly. "I mean with me being a tiefling and a rouge, instead of… I don't know, an elven cleric or something. Something more in line with all this, instead of having an infernal bloodline."
"I think you have the wrong idea about gods and infernal beings. We're more similar than you'd think." She said, shrugging. "And likely because they dont want to taint anyone's followers perception of them. They likely chose you because you arent 'in line' with this." She explained.
“Oh. I guess I hadn't thought of it that way.” Charlie agreed. “I never had much of a mind for politics. It's so… self-serving and two-faced.” she sighed. “But I’m curious how we’re similar.”
"Well, most full-blooded infernal beings are immortal like the gods, and are often pretty powerful. They like ruling over certain domains, and a lot of gods look similar. Infernal beings are the most common to catch gods attention, which means they are also the most common to accent to godhood."
Charlie froze, her eyes widening as she absorbed that news. She knew that a lot of deities had their own unique look, present company included, and that tieflings had a wide range of physical characteristics… but she’d never compared the two. And the rest was something she’d never heard before.
“Ummm… how full-blooded do you mean?” she asked. “I mean, both my parents are tieflings but they weren't born that way, and I’m obviously too young to have experienced anything that would qualify as immortal, and I’m not exactly a leader, and you're the first “attention” I’ve ever received from anyone in the pantheon.” she rambled.
"I'm not entirely sure. Many non-tiefling infernal beings are, I'm not sure about tieflings. And not all infernal beings will catch gods' eyes." She said, shrugging
Charlie forced herself to take a deep breath and nodded. “Ok. I can live with that.” she said softly. “I just… I’m sure a lot of people would love to ascend but I don't know if that's for me. Or at least not yet.” she shrugged, unsure of what the future might hold. But she knew she wasn't going to mention to anyone that the “path” Irae told her existed was even an option.
"Yeah. In order to do so, you'd first have to devote yourself to a god, do something that intreagues them, than manage to get them to love you. It dosen't happen often, but I'd say about half of the people who have done it have been infernal. I guess not all of the steps are necessary, but doing it that way is the surest. If you are already immortal, just devoting yourself to one god for long enough could make one a demigod. And some people just make themselves noticed without any devotion." Irae mused. "But getting a god to love is the most sure way, and devoting yourself to and getting noticed by a god make that more likely."
(Lore dump sorry)
(It's ok.)
Charlie nodded thoughtfully. “Well, at least… I just know some people who would try to ascend in the fastest, most undeserving way when they shouldn't be allowed to.” she admitted. “I'm still not sure about devoting myself to anyone… but, honestly, if I was going to, I’d probably end up choosing you after all this. The rest… I don't know.” she shrugged.
Irae smiled slightly. "That is fair. Some mortals who catch the attention of a god are offered immortality and refuse it, so it's not like it's forced upon you if it's offered." She said.
“Yeah. I wasn't worried about being able to refuse.” Charlie admitted. “And honestly, I’m not too worried about it even being offered to me. I doubt I've done anything to get that kind of offer anyway.” she shrugged.
Irae shrugged. "I wouldn't know. I've only just met you." She said, looking around. (I assume after they paid they left the shop and started walking to the next one, or back to the inn). "Where to now?"
Charlie couldn't help but laugh a little, nodding. “That's fair. We did only meet yesterday.” she agreed before looking around. “I'm not sure… I hadn't thought of any other pressing places to go to. Unless…” she trailed off and looked down. “How are your shoes? Are they comfortable? Sturdy? You never know what you're going to come up against when you’re on the road.”
Irae looked down at her boots and shrugged. "They're good waking shoes, fairly comfortable. I have no idea how sturdy they are- they were magically made before, so I have no idea. They feel sturdy enough though."
“Ok. Good enough for me.” Charlie shrugged. “We can always buy new ones at the next village or town we come across if we need to.” she assured.
Irae nodded. "Sounds good to me. Should we head back to the inn then?" She asked, watching the streets.
Charlie shrugged. “If you want. We can at least drop off your stuff at our room. Don't know what else we can do there though.”
