“Thank you.” Charlotte smiled up at him as she accepted the smaller glass. Even though it was the available size for fairies, and other small customers, she still needed both hands to hold it.
“Thank you.” Charlotte smiled up at him as she accepted the smaller glass. Even though it was the available size for fairies, and other small customers, she still needed both hands to hold it.
Rodney sat next to her, sipping from his glass and observing all of the patrons around them. "Places like this are so comfortable, don't you think?"
Charlotte hummed in agreement as she sat comfortably on the table, looking around them. “They are. Comfortable, familiar, and a little chaotic.” she added before taking a sip of her drink. “It is a little strange for me though, since I’m used to being on the other side of this setting.” she giggled.
Rodney just laughed. "I suppose that's true. But now you're being served instead of serving. Isn't it so much more relaxing?"
“Very much so. It is a nice change of pace, I admit.” she nodded. “And getting to be myself in a place like this makes it even better.”
"See? I can't see why you didn't leave earlier. You talked about how you wanted to break from the routine before, why did it take you so long?"
She sighed softly and gave a shrug. “Well, at first, I was too young and my mom kept giving me reasons not to. “It's not safe. Young ladies shouldn't travel. You’ll get captured or eaten.” I stopped bringing it up in front of her just to get her to stop.” she admitted with a humorless chuckle. “Then… I made my mistake and couldn't leave, then I needed time to recover and found comfort in the familiarity of the routine.” she said, not meeting his eyes as she took a sip of her drink.
Rodney listened intently and nodded when she ended. "I can understand that. There were a lot of reasons why I didn't leave until I did either. But the second I had that chance, I took it and never looked back."
Charlotte nodded, understanding and grateful that he didn't ask about… She knew he said that he wouldn't but it was still assuring. “And you gave me the same chance and I don't regret it either.” she smiled.
"Exactly. Sometimes the best way to start an adventure is to just say yes and start walking. Eventually you'll find something."
Charlotte nodded, smiling up at him. “And I'm glad that I said yes to your offer. Otherwise, I would probably be regretting staying behind right now.” she giggled.
"That indeed. Although I'm sure you'd eventually leave on your own. But I can't say I'm not happy that you decided to join me."
“Really? Well, that makes one of us because I’m not so sure if I would leave or not.” she admitted. “But I'm glad that we're traveling together. You are a wonderful companion.”
"Aw, how sweet of you. You make a lovely companion as well, my friend." Rodney smiled, lightly clinking their glasses together before taking a sip.
Charlotte giggled at the little toast he made, feeling her face warm slightly at the compliment, but drank with him all the same. “You're too kind.”
"Come now, we can't sit here and compliment each other all night. You'll run out of things long before I do. It won't be fair."
“Oh, really?” she smirked, arching a brow at him. “Because we've been traveling together for three/four days and I haven't run out yet.”
"You will. There's not really much to love about me." He chuckled. "Believe me. I've looked."
“Maybe… but have you ever heard of being your hardest critic?” she asked, giggling with him. “Sometimes quirks or traits of ours that you don't necessarily like can be absolutely endearing to someone else. It's good to have an outside opinion on those things.” she smiled.
"Is that really a saying? I suppose it's been a while since I've had a true conversation with someone that's longer than just a couple of minutes so maybe it is."
“It is.” she nodded. “I use it to remind myself not to be so hard on myself, especially when I’m feeling low. And you might want to get used to longer conversations while I'm around.” she teased.
"Mm, I'd certainly hope so! Less conversations means you're not around and I'm not sure in which context that would be less insulting." He laughed.
Charlotte laughed with him and nodded. “Don't worry about it too much. You're stuck with me for the foreseeable future.”
"Good, that's good. There's so much to show you and I'd hate for you to leave before you get to see it all."
“I’ll drink to that as I am looking forward to a long exciting adventure with you.” she smiled.
"Cheers to that." Rodney clinked their glasses again before downing the rest of his drink. "Mm, good stuff. I've tasted some real bad things in some taverns, this is one of the better ones."
Charlotte giggled as their glasses touched and followed his lead. “Well, I’ll have to check with you to tell the difference if we get a bad one. I never served anything bad at my inn.”
"No indeed you didn't. But some are really run down and have lost their luster. Don't worry, I'll point out the bad ones to you as we pass them by."
“I've heard of places like that.” she nodded, referring to some of the travelers she spoke to before. “I think it's embarrassing to let a business fall like that.”
"Maybe it is. But some places just can't be sustained. They lose an important member of staff, prices of ingredients rise beyond what they can compensate for, there's a lot of reasons why quality may dip."
