Charlotte blushed a little when he called the inn hers again. “You're very welcome.” she nodded, pouring herself a cup of tea and grabbing a pastry. “Normally, I eat before the others show up.”
Charlotte blushed a little when he called the inn hers again. “You're very welcome.” she nodded, pouring herself a cup of tea and grabbing a pastry. “Normally, I eat before the others show up.”
He swallowed his bite and smiled. "Not today. I'm usually up earlier than this. I like to be moving when the sun comes up but I guess the lack of being in the woods made me sleep a little longer."
“That or you are not used to sleeping in a soft bed.” she giggled. “Me, I can sleep anywhere. It's easy enough when you can fit under a leaf. Or in someone's pocket… But I haven't done that since I was a kid.”
"I cannot even begin to tell you the kind of mischief I would get up to if I could make myself that small. I would be unstoppable."
Charlotte laughed softly, shaking her head. “Can you imagine the chaos we could get into if we worked together?”
Rodney thought for a minute. "Would you be willing to?" He asked genuinely. "Would you be willing to leave this place and travel with me?"
Charlotte looked up from her tea and stared. “Seriously? I mean, I would like to travel and I can tell traveling with you would be an adventure.” she said thoughtfully.
"Then do it. Come with me. When I go today, just come with me. It's your life, no one can tell you what to do with it. If you want adventure come find it with me."
Charlotte hummed a little as she swirled her drink. “That's quite an offer. And you're right. It is my life… and I've always wanted to see more than just the town.” she sighed. “You know what. I’m thinking too hard about it. I'm in! I’ll go with you.”
Rodney's face split into a bright smile. "Fantastic! I actually have an adventure buddy! This is new!"
Charlotte grinned just as brightly. “It's new for me too.” she reminded him. “I should probably tell someone here that I'm going, so the inn will be taken care of. I don't have to mention you. Just that I'm finally traveling. Oh, and I’ll need to pack.”
"Give as few details as possible. It'll be easier to get away without leaving a paper trail. Sure it's a bit weird not being able to solidly contact home but it's just what happens."
“Alright.” she nodded, enthusiastically. “Thank you. I can't believe I'm really doing this.” she giggled.
"Ah don't sweat it. The first time is always the hardest." He teased with a playful wink. "Now come on, we've got an adventure to go on."
“You finish your breakfast and I’ll take care of my things. I won't be long.” she assured him before heading back upstairs.
Rodney finished relatively quickly, feeling pumped that he finally had a traveling partner for his journey. Maybe now those cold nights would feel a little less lonely.
Charlotte was practically buzzing with excitement as she packed. She was sure to pack light, only a couple of spare clothes and a few essentials. On her way out she met one of her coworkers and told her that she was finally leaving.
Rodney headed upstairs to grab his own pack, still packed from the night before, and headed back down to wait for her.
“Doe this decision have anything to do with last night?” her friend asked, a little concerned.
Charlotte shrugged. “Maybe a little. But it's fine. You know I've always wanted to see more of the world.”
“Yeah, I know. But you should also know that a lot of us never really liked Markus after…”
“We are not bringing that up.” Charlotte quickly interrupted.
The other woman raised her hands in surrender. “I’m just saying, if you gave the word; I would have decked him for you.” she clarified with a smile.
Charlotte sighed and smiled back. “I know you would've. But he's not worth it and I wouldn't want you to get into trouble for that. You just take good care of this place while I’m gone.”
Rodney whistled quietly to himself to keep himself entertained. He hoped she would hurry up, he could hear other people starting to wake up and he really didn't need to be spotted this early.
“You take care of yourself.” she replied as she hugged Charlotte close.
“I will. And I will come back. Don't know when, but I will.” Charlotte promised as she returned the hug before stepping back and taking off her bracelet. She stretched her wings and flew off towards Rodney. “You ready?” she asked, slipping the bracelet into her bag.
Rodney smiled at the little fairy that appeared before him. "As I'll ever be, Charlotte. Now come on. Out the back. It'll be safer that way."
“I know.” Charlotte nodded, understanding, and lead the way. “That's part of why I took off my bracelet. Plus, I don't want you to get in trouble for “kidnapping” me.” she added with a wink.
He waved her off with a chuckle. "Yeah, that'd be bad." He slipped into the exit passage she'd showed him, exiting out the back with a sigh as the sunlight hit him.
Charlotte had to wait for him to open the door but eagerly flew into the alley with him. There wasn't really anything to see back here, but it was a clear shot to get out unseen. “Do you have a direction you want to go?” she asked since it seemed a little redundant to ask where they were going.
"I was hoping you would pick, my friend." He hummed, gesturing to the open field with a smile. "The world is our oyster."
“Oh! Umm… Ok.” she nodded, not having expected him to leave the option up to her. “This way then.”
"Lead the way." He hummed, following her lead as they made their way into the woods. "This'll be a fun adventure."
“I certainly hope so.” she smiled back at him as she took the lead and headed for the shortest route out of town. Hopefully, he wouldn’t mind since she had known the place all her life and now it wasn't exactly safe for him to stay longer.
Rodney just followed her quietly, enjoying the sounds of the world waking up around them. It was one of his favorite things, just watching everything come to life.
