"My, uhm, Arquis's hair is falling out. In, uhm, clumps. I was just…I wanted to see if we could get a doctor to come and take a look at him?" he said slowly, fidgeting for just a moment. "Neither of us knows why this is happening to him, or why it's falling out like this, and we'd like to see what a doctor would say about it." he ran his hands htrough his hair anxiously, unsure what to do or where to look, what to do.

He laughed softly, watching as Honey darted down the hallway. "Sounds lovely." he replied teasingly, shrugging a shoulder. "I'm sure everyone who saw you thought that you just looked absolutely wonderful, darling." he smirked a little bit at the blond, reaching out to take Honey's hand. He did so very slowly and gently, giving Honey plenty of time and ability to pull awya.

Lovey immediately looked horrified. Concern chased that shock away, followed by sympathy for Rin. She reached to soothingly pat his arm before peering over the front desk. A romance book she'd been reading was open about halfway. Beneath that were some scattered papers. She opened the top drawer and lifted out a book with a map in it, which she unfolded.

"I don't know why that would be happening," she said gently, "but I think you were right to try and find a doctor. Let's see. Okay. If you go into town, there's a doctor's clinic kind of by this dress shop. There's a really nice guy who works there, very soft spoken. He's come up here a couple of times before, so he'd probably be willing to make the trip. His name is Doctor Lavin. He's older, about forty or fifty."

She handed the map to Rin and smiled, trying to calm them down. It wouldn't do anyone much good if he had a panic attack on the way there, especially not them.

——

Honey went as red as the outfit he'd been describing. He let Ari take his hand. Butterflies fluttered in his stomach, and he laughed mostly to himself.

"Well, thanks. But I could never look as good as you, angel," he shot back. He wouldn't lose a flirting contest. "Remember what we said earlier? You'd definitely win best looking. Mm, especially the other night, on our date.”

@ElderGod-Icefire

He took the map, taking a deep breath. "I'm…alright. I'll go…I'll go talk to him, then." he said slowly, fidgeting again for just a moment as he tried to think of what to do, what to say. Then he looked down at the map again, eyes moving over the route he would have to take, then he looked over at Lovey again. "I'm…yeah. Thanks!" he headed towards the door again, movements jittery and quick and anxious as he walked quickly towards the door, then out and towards the village.

Ari grinned at him. "Mm, maybe, but you're quite definitely the most handsome of us two." he replied, tipping his head slightly to one side. "I believe we agreed on that one, as well, unless I am greatly mistaken."

Lovey waved, though she still looked very worried for Rin. They didn't seem in the best shape. Not that she could blame him for that; if Pretty or Honey were suddenly losing hair, she'd be an anxious wreck. She had no clue what could be causing it. Was hair loss associated with some kind of disease? She'd never heard of that before, but she really hoped it wasn't that serious.

From what she remembered of Doctor Lavin's clinic, it was a decently-sized space with several sterile rooms and a receptionist's desk. The outside was made of creamy brick. She couldn't recall what the door looked like, whether it was red or green or even brown, but she remembered that there was a sign written in Anvillean out front. She hoped Rin found the right place.

——

Honey's lips twisted, and he gave a stubborn shake of his head. "Nah, there's no way. Even if we did say that, then, well, it's wrong. Pretty sure if you looked up handsome in the dictionary, it'd have a picture of you."

Light flirting like this was enjoyable. There were physical undertones to everything, but it wasn't graphic or violent. In fact, it was rather endearing. The blond found himself smiling as he approached his door and put his key into the lock. His room appeared slightly more in order than when Ari had been there that morning.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin headed towards the village as quickly as he could, his feet pattering along the walkway, footsteps soft and quick. He wanted to get the doctor as soon as possible. He knew that maybe, probably, this wouldn't be a time sensitive thing, but they still wanted to get help as soon as possible. This was…this was all so strange, and terrifying. He didn't know what to do.

Ari shook his head. "Absolutely not, it would have a picture of you. Along with another of you for prettiest smile, too." he replied, smiling over at Honey. Their hands were still laced together, but the grip was soft enough that Honey could easily pull away the moment he wanted to, and Ari would release him. It wasn't a problem, if Honey wanted or needed to pull away.

Back in the bedroom, Arquis managed to push himself into a standing position. He used the headboard as a crutch and wobbled over to where Rin had accidentally left his clothes. Putting on a shirt would require too much untying and adjusting, but he could slip on some pants. He did so one leg at a time. It took forever, and by the time he was finished, he was very winded. He sank down onto the bed once more. His mouth was dry, but there was no way he'd be able to get up again for water.

——

"Prettiest smile, huh?" Honey demonstrated that happy, lopsided smile. His dimples showed. He ran his thumb over Ari's knuckles before lifting it to his lips. As if he was greeting a gentleman, he gingerly kissed his hand. He came up with an even brighter grin.

"Aren't you just the sweetest? And also the silliest, 'cause there's nobody in this land more handsome than you. I mean it! You've got it all. The hair, the face, and don't even get me started on the figure." Playfully, he let his eyes flicker over his form. "You're a triple threat, angel."

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin kept heading towards the village, mind beginning to consume itself with worry about what this could mean. What was wrong with their partner? What was happening to Arquis? Why was it happening now, rather than earlier? What had set this off? They didn't understand, and they just hoped that the doctor had answers for what was happening to their lover. To be honest…he was frightened for what this could mean.

"Yes. Prettiest smile." he replied, laughing a little bit. "And I do believe that you're more handsome than me. I mean, look at the smile. The hair. The muscles." he returned Honey's playful gaze with one of his own, smiling at the blond. "And you've even got the most wonderful personality, to boot. You've got it all, darling."

In the village, a teenager walked outside with a small bucket of paint. She sat down next to the sign her father had built ages prior and took a brush from her overalls. Her long, dark brown hair caught in the damp wind as she began to carefully trace over the sign's letters. Every now and then, she was tasked with this job. She didn't really mind it, but she loved to pretend that she did. She'd rolled her kohl-lined eyes when her father had begged her to do it. He'd hugged her, of course. That was his solution to most things. Scared after a nightmare? A hug and some cocoa. Had a bad breakup? A nice, warm hug, ice cream, and a new blanket. Was being bullied? Well, that one he didn't fix with a hug. He'd gone right to her tormentor's parents. She'd been the one to hug him after that, and he'd twirled her in the air like always, beaming. That was one of the things that made him a good doctor: he was extremely empathetic, and he genuinely cared for and would help everyone he met. The vulnerable, the distressed, the sick. He was there for people.

——

"Careful, Ari," Honey teased. "Keep talking like that, and you're really gonna inflate my ego. I'm gonna get the world's biggest head."

It was pretty obvious that he was actually quite pleased by all the flattery. Hearing that his personality was attractive as also very nice. Usually, he catered his personality to the men he met, but he didn't have to pretend with Ari. He could be soft and silly and smile like a goofball, and the young man would encourage it.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin eventually found the doctor's place, and paused outside, taking a moment to compose himself. It would do none of them any good if he just barged in there, out of breathe and incoherent. His gaze fell on the teenage girl outside, and he mustered up a smile. "Hi. Is this, uhm, doctor Lavin's?" he asked, fidgeting with the hem of their shirt for a moment. "And, ah, if it is, is he in?" his accent was stronger than normal, brought on by the stress of whatever was happening to Arquis.

Ari laughed. "I don't think you'd look bad, though. Probably would look just as good as you always have." he replied, giving Honey a soft, sweet smile. "You're just so pretty, Honey, who couldn't love you?" the question was soft and sincere. Who wouldn't care about the young man beside him?

Deleted user

The girl stared at him for a beat, blinking her brown, dark-lidded eyes. There were paint splatters caked on her hands from when she'd accidentally dropped the brush. What they'd said finally clicked, and she nodded, pointing at the front door. Her expression was curious. She'd never heard an accent like that before.

"Yeah. Dad's working today. Do you have an appointment?" She looked them up and down, not detecting any major wounds. "If it's not an emergency, he might ask you to wait. But just go on inside anyways. He'd be pissed if I made you wait out here."

——

Honey blushed. Men had called him pretty before, but it was usually in the leering, ill-intentioned way. They'd talk about how they wanted to ruin him, make his perfect makeup bleed. Ari wasn't like that. He was being genuine, and the blond could hear it in his voice.

"I think the same about you," he said shyly. His heart was hammering in his chest, and his stomach felt knotted with nerves. Was this what a crush was supposed to feel like? He'd never felt this sensation before, but it was wonderful. "You're incredible, angel."

@ElderGod-Icefire

He cleared his throat faintly. "I don't, but, uhm, I'm not the one who…oh, nevermind. No point in explaining it more than once. Thank you." he gave her a faint, nervous smile, then headed inside, looking around for the doctor. "Hello?" he called softly, running a hand through their hair as they tried to think of what to do now, what to say now. He didn't know what to do now, if the doctor wasn't available. He supposed he could go and see if Ophia could help. instead, but he hated to bother her again.

Ari beamed at the blond, smiling as he reached over and brushed his fingers against Honey's cheek. "You must be talking about yourself, lovely." he replied. "Because you are so, so incredible and strong and wonderful. I don't know how you could possibly be talking about me."

A middle-aged man with tan skin was sitting at a large, wooden desk. His hair was the same dark brown as his daughter's, but it was shot through with gray and white. There were lines around his friendly eyes, which were magnified slightly by rectangular wire glasses. The man looked over when Rin entered, then offered them a welcoming smile. He set down the pen he'd been holding.

"Hello. I don't have anyone booked for the next hour, so I'm assuming you're a walk-in? That's perfectly alright. We do take walk-ins." He had a very soft, soothing way of talking, almost like he was humming a song. "Would you like to talk out here, or should I go ahead and get a room set up?"

——

Honey actually started to cry. It surprised even him, and he scrubbed at his cheeks with his good hand. Laughter bubbled from his mouth. He just let it.

"Sorry, sorry. I don't mean to get all weepy. You just always know exactly what to say to get me teary-eyed, don't you? You're an absolute sweetheart." He smiled to show that he actually was alright and leaned into Ari's soft touch. He'd been starved of gentleness all his life. It felt so good.

@ElderGod-Icefire

He took a deep breath. "I…I'm not the one that needs a check-up. It's…I'm staying at the hotel, and my partner…he got out of the bath and his hair was falling out in…in clumps." he didn't know how to explain this the right way. "I'm…I came to see if you would be willing to come and see what was wrong. We can pay you, of course, I'm not asking for your expertise for free." his accent was still poking through in his voice, and he was fidgeting with his hands, eyes flickering about for a long moment before returning back to the doctor.

Ari smiled a little bit, reaching up to run a hand through Honey's hair. "It's alright." he said quietly. "i…I didn't mean to make you cry, though, and I am sorry for that." he ran a hand through his own hair, a little anxiously. "Even if they are good tears, I didn't mean to make you cry."

The doctor rose calmly out of his seat and closed the files he'd been working on. A woman, presumably another doctor or nurse of some sort, came out and took them from him when he called. He informed her of the situation. While she took over the front desk, he brought out his large, overstuffed travel bag and slung it over his forearm. The sides of it bulged, but it was made of a highly durable material. He gave it a pat before joining Rin.

"Of course I'll come with you. Don't worry about paying for now. It sounds like you've had quite a scare. Tell me a bit more about what's been going on with your partner." He walked out the front door, keeping it open for them. "Has he had any other notable symptoms that could be related to his hair? Skin allergies of some sort? Irritation or any kind of rash?"

——

Honey reached over and took Ari's hand, knitting their fingers together. His tears were already slowing. He sniffled softly and smiled again.

"It's okay, angel. It's okay. I'm just real happy right now. That happens sometimes. The waterworks just start going, and I, y'know," he gestured at his reddened face and the wet tracks drying there. "But really, please don't apologize. You just did good. That's all that meant. I'm okay, and you're okay. And I'm going to change, and then we're gonna get tea, and I won't cry again. Probably."

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin nodded slightly, coming out the door and taking a deep breath. "Right. Uhm. I don't…I don't know." he said slowly. "If there was anything else, he didn't tell me." he hated that he had no ieda what had happened, if there was any precursor to this, but they really couldn't remember if there had been anything. And they knew that they seemed perhaps overly stressed, but he had no idea what was happening or what was going on now, or what was happening to their partner.

Ari gave him another soft smile, rubbing his thumb over Honey's knuckles. "Alright." he said softly. He released Honey's hand after a moment. "Now get changed, yeah? I'll go wait outside in the hallway, and then we can head out and go to the tea place." he took a step back towards the door to Honey's room.

The doctor nodded. They passed his daughter, who was still painting the sign, and he briefly told her what was going on. She waved absentmindedly as she traced a curly letter with her brush bristles. He cleared his throat and turned back to Rin as they walked. His pace wasn't rushed, but it wasn't slow, either. He could tell that they were upset and wanted to treat the situation with urgency.

"Alright. That's okay. Sometimes things develop quickly, without us knowing. It was smart of you to seek help at the first sign of trouble." He was still speaking in that soothing tone, though it wasn't patronizing in the slightest. That was just his voice. He smiled warmly at Rin. "Your partner is very lucky to have someone looking out for his health."

——

"You don't actually gotta leave, if you don't wanna," Honey blurted, then flushed. "I don't mean that in, like, a voyeuristic way. But you could just stay in here. I can go to the bathroom or something."

As he spoke, he went over to the bed and began to look through the clothes he'd folded earlier. He had one good sweater left. It was a cable knit, white number. He also had some tight black pants that Myr hadn't completely ruined. There were holes in its knees, but that was kind of fashionable.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin nodded faintly, still fidgeting. "Right. Yeah. I…" he trailed off, taking a deep breath. "Sorry. I'm…I'm not making a lot of sense right now, I know." they gave the doctor a quick, tense smile. "Thank you for coming." he knew he probably seemed almost manic, and they knew that that wasn't really a good look. They were just worried, and he couldn't help how worried he was about all of this.

Ari laughed a little at Honey's embarrassed, flustered behavior, running a hand through his hair. "Alright. I'll, uhm, do that then, I suppose." he replied slowly, shrugging a shoulder and closing the door to the bedroom, hovering by the door for a moment and then coming back over to Honey.

Doctor Lavin paused, truly studying Rin for the first time since they'd left his clinic. Behind his glasses, his dark eyes were concerned. He reached over and touched the bard's shoulder with the hand that wasn't grasping his stuffed medical bag. It was a kind, almost fatherly touch, and he let it linger for a moment before starting to walk again.

"It's alright. We do not always think clearly when those we love are hurting, but it's important to remember to take care of ourselves as well. Try to breathe deeply. Focus on your physical surroundings. Ground yourself in the moment. Everything will be okay."

——

Honey's heart rate spiked when the door closed. He battled down the instinct to run. He'd invited Ari. The other man wasn't here to hurt him. He could lock himself in the bathroom, if needed. There was no need to panic. When his initial burst of anxiety faded, he took his clothes, set them on the sink, and shut the door. Then, he began to change. The sweater felt nice and comfy. It made him look like a fluffy marshmallow. He slipped on the pants, then adjusted his wrist brace. For good measure, he put on some vanilla perfume and rubbed some edible cookie-scented body butter into his neck. Myr had knocked the tub over, but it hadn't opened. He topped it all off with some lip gloss before stepping out.

"What do you think? Not my most risqué look, but I think it's kinda cute," he said, smiling. His slightly pink cheeks were the only remnant of his earlier tears.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin looked up at him, inhaling faintly and nodding slightly. "I, uhm…okay." he said slowly. "Thank you." they swallowed softly, running their hands through his hair. "I'm just…a bit anxious, I suppose." they took a deep breath, just trying to calm down still. It was difficult, but they were working on it.

Ari smiled at Honey when the blond came out of the bathroom, gaze flickering over him. "You look adorable, Honey." he replied, smiling as he approached the blond. "Absolutely wonderful." he reached out to carefully take Honey's hand, lacing his fingers through Honey's.

Deleted user

"That's understandable," the doctor replied softly. He wasn't going to try and convince Rin that he could magically heal their partner. Things would be alright one way or another, but as it currently stood, some anxiety was expected. He gave him another gentle smile as they continued up the path to the inn. Eventually, the building came into sight, and he entered to find Lovey at the front desk. She gave him a small nod, which he returned, before pointing him to Rin and Arquis's shared room.

"Is there anything else medically relevant I should know about your partner?" he asked, trailing behind the bard. Lovey might've given him instructions, but that didn't mean he was confident about where he was going. He hoped Rin would show him there.

——

Honey went a gorgeous shade of pink. Ari thought he was cute. Even better, Ari was holding his hand again, and the warmth of it felt lovely. It also made him feel all bubbly inside to think that people would see them as a couple.

Still, he had to keep up appearances. Play their little game of teasing and flirting. "Adorable? I'm not sure about that. Wonderful, though—that's just real sweet of you, angel. To say that I look good in a big old sweater like this. Preposterous."

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin was mostly quiet for the remainder of the walk, still fidgeting every now and again as he walked beside the doctor. He did take the lead again when they were inside the hotel, leading the doctor back towards their room. "I don't…I don't know. He has anxiety, and he has breakdowns sometimes, but, uhm, that's not medical? I don't know." he raked a hand through his hair, eyes flickering around the hallway.

Ari's mouth tipped to one side, very faintly, as he smiled at Honey. "You are adorable, dear. Of course you are." he replied, rubbing his thumb over Honey's knuckles. "The sweetest, most adorable thing ever."

Deleted user

It shouldn't have been possible, but the doctor's expression softened even further. "That is important information. Psychological issues often manifest through physical symptoms, which could relate to what he's currently experiencing. Thank you for letting me know."

In the bedroom, Arquis had accidentally fallen asleep. He hadn't meant to. This was a somewhat serious matter, and he probably should've been more upset about it than he actually was. The problem was just that he was too exhausted. He'd closed his eyes for a second. That second had then quickly turned into several minutes. He awoke slowly when he thought he heard approaching footsteps and blinked blearily.

——

Honey burst into pleased laughter. Once he was finished, he leaned down just a little to kiss Ari on the cheek. His own were still positively flushed. The young man was so lovely to him that he couldn't help it.

"You're an absolute charmer, aren't you? Where'd you learn to say that sort of stuff? Cotillion?" he teased, smiling that lopsided smile. "Goodness. Forget scones. I'm getting my sugar fix right now, apparently. You're gonna give me cavities, with how sweet you are, handsome."

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin unlocked the door of the room, stepping inside. "Arquis? Darling, I've brought the doctor." he called, coming over to the bed and gently touching Arquis's shoulder when he saw that his partner had fallen asleep. "Sorry to wake you, love. But, uh, I brought the doctor and he said he can take a look at you. Arquis, this is Doctor Lavin. Doctor Lavin, this is my partner, Arquis."

Ari beamed at him. "It was part of my lessons, of course. I learned how to charm people with sweet compliments." he brought Honey's knuckles up to his mouth, pressing a soft kiss to the blond's hand. "And while I am thrilled that you love the compliments, I would love some scones as well."

(coming back to this post rn because I wrote it like minutes before falling asleep and I wanted to briefly check that it made sense but I just realized for some reason that it’s extremely long, sorry!!)

Arquis was still very much out of it when they entered the room, so the first thing he did was stare at the stranger groggily. A moment later, his manners seemed to return to him. He propped himself up on the pillows with shaky hands and made a quiet sound. It was supposed to be a greeting, but his mouth wasn't really working yet. He finally managed to give an actual greeting after a few seconds had passed.

"It is very nice to meet you, Arquis," Doctor Lavin responded pleasantly, as if this was all a very normal interaction. The nobleman blushed. He was already embarrassed, and they hadn't even gotten to the actual medical examination yet.

"Your partner here says you've been having some trouble with your hair. Before I look at that, though, I'd like to ask some questions. It's mostly just medical history, nothing too serious. Do I have your permission for that?" When Arquis nodded, the older man smiled. “Excellent. Let’s get started.”

They went through several facts—full name, date of birth, approximate height, family medical history—while the doctor took notes on a pad he'd pulled from his bag. Then, they reached a bit of a problem spot.

“Do you remember what your weight was at your last exam?"

"Exam?"

"Your last annual medical exam, specifically."

Arquis glanced from the doctor to Rin, then back to the doctor. "Is that something I was supposed to be doing? Getting examinations?" he asked uncertainly.

Doctor Lavin's eyebrows raised, but he tried to smooth his expression into something calm. "Yes, you're supposed to get rather regular checkups.”

"Oh. Ah. My parents used to occasionally call doctors to our estate when I was younger. I had asthma as a child. But I never had an annual exam of any sort, at least none that I can recall. The most recent checkup I had was about two weeks prior for an asthma attack triggered partially by some sort of poison."

"You were poisoned?" the doctor asked, shock bleeding into his tone. When he saw how the change in inflection frightened the nobleman, he took a breath and steadied himself. "Alright. We can discuss that momentarily."

As if to better the man’s opinion of him, Arquis desperately interjected, "Wait! I do know my weight! About a month and a half ago, I weighed myself. I weighed about one hundred," he swallowed, suddenly incredibly embarrassed, "and fifty."

Doctor Lavin did not state the obvious: Arquis did not weigh one hundred and fifty pounds. If he had at some point, he did not anymore. Instead, the doctor set the notepad aside and began to rummage through his bag.

"Okay. I'm going to check some vitals while we're here. Current weight, pulse, blood pressure. That sort of thing. Nothing stressful, just the basics. Feel free to talk while I'm getting my equipment set up."

——

Honey beamed at the kiss. "Yeah. Scones sound pretty good right now, don't they? What kind are you craving?"

He personally could go for any kind, as long as they got to them soon. He began to walk towards the door and exited out into the hall. As per usual, it was quiet except for the very sensual noises coming from somewhere to the left. The blond held back a laugh. They'd have to cross right by that area to get to the front desk. That was just their luck.

@ElderGod-Icefire

(lol you're fine!!)

Rin was quiet, letting Arquis and the doctor talk, then reached out to gently take Arquis's hand while the doctor got ready. "Are you, uhm, feeling any better than when I left?" he asked softly, kissing Arquis's cheek and also gently feeling his forehead at the same time. He knew that Arquis hadn't really exhibited a lot of fever symptoms, but he still wanted to double check that Arquis didn't have one. He didn't know what else to do. They knew that Arquis's statement about his weight was…well, not true, but he wasn't going to point that out. Not when that could cause too much trouble right now.

"Mm, a sweet kind, perhaps? What kind does the tea shop have?" he asked, smiling at Honey. At the noises doewn the hall, he couldn't hold back the soft laugh that left his mouth, and his gaze flicked from Honey to the hallway. "Oh dear."

Deleted user

Arquis smiled sweetly when they pressed his hand to his forehead, and he leaned back a little so that he could kiss their palm. He didn't like how nervous they'd been earlier, before he'd left to fetch the doctor. Sure, what was happening to him wasn't exactly pretty. It didn't seem tremendously dangerous, though. Sometimes hair fell out. Maybe it really did mean nothing.

"Oh, my love, I am alright." Softly, he repeated, "I am alright. We will figure this out."

"Okay. Sorry, that was fast, but sometimes it's more cooperative than I expect," Doctor Lavin interrupted. He'd set up some sort of flat, portable scale on the floor. He gestured for Arquis to step on it. The nobleman remained where he was. He could feel his heart in his throat. And though he'd told Rin that he was alright, he really wasn't. He was still dizzy. He didn't think he could stay upright for long enough for the scale to work. Plus, he really just didn't want to use it.

"Perhaps we could skip this step," he suggested mildly, sinking against his partner's shoulder.

——

"Tunnel of Love," Honey wisecracked, grinning. He shut and locked his door behind them. The noises grew louder, and the blond couldn't help but give in and join Ari's laughter. "I should be used to hearing that by now, but every time I swear it gets me. There's always something new. People get into some weird stuff around here. That's the whole point, I guess."

He began to walk forward. As he did, however, there was the unmistakable sound of rubber snapping, like a glove or something similar. He nearly buckled over with laughter and gripped Ari's arm for support.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin bit his lip faintly. "Darling, you need to…you can't skip this, love." he said in a soft tone, reaching to gently help Arquis up from the bed. "If you're feeling shaky, I can help support you, but you need to step on the scale, please. I want you to feel better, love, and this is the way to do that. Come on." his voice was soft and gentle, and they kept their gaze resting on Arquis.

Rin smiled a little, then started to shake with laughter. "Oh dear." he repeated, laughing and holding onto Honey. "This might, ah, pose a problem." he said, a grin pulling at his mouth. "I don't think that's just a make-out session anymore."

Deleted user

Arquis let Rin help him up, but the moment he was standing, he began to shake his head. His vision blurred. Whether that was from lightheadedness or tears, he couldn't quite tell. He didn't want to do this. He'd already given the doctor the information he'd requested, and it had been accurate. A month and a half ago, he'd weighed somewhere between one hundred forty to one hundred fifty pounds. That estimate was all the doctor should need. This was cruel and unnecessary, and he didn't want his lover to have to be there for it.

"It is pointless," he insisted, breath hitching. He buried his face in Rin's chest but stepped onto the scale anyway. It wasn't like he could run. They'd all just stand around waiting for him to do it. He didn't have to look at what the scale said. That would make it better, he reassured himself, his distressed gaze lingering on his partner.

The doctor hesitated. "A month and a half ago, you believe you were about one hundred and fifty pounds? Is that what you said earlier?"

Arquis swallowed and nodded. He wanted this to be over with already. Doctor Lavin looked back at the scale, which read approximately one hundred and twenty-six.

——

"Yeah. Sounds like they're really going at it. Let's get out of here before the bed springs start squeaking, yeah?" Just as soon as he'd finished speaking, those noises filled the air. The blond wheezed from laughter and tugged Ari down the hallway. He was honestly kind of impressed. Their beds were high quality. It took a lot to make that much noise. He was also very grossed out.

"Scones," he gasped once they were around the corner, still grinning. "Let's talk about scones. Uh, they've got orange. Maybe. Lavender? Lemon?"

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin held onto Arquis, his support gentle and careful. At the doctor's words and at the number on the scale, he inhaled softly. "Darling…" that was so little. No wonder Rin could pick him up so easily. No wonder Arquis was so easily tired and light headed. Maybe the hair loss was another symptom of this. Should they have pressed harder to get him to eat? Should they have forced him to eat more? Did they need to do that? He swallowed faintly, looking at his lover.

He was practically cackling as they darted down the hallway, grinning over at Honey. "Orange could be good!" he replied, still laughing. "I don't really know. They all sound delicious, really." he ran a hand through his curls, still laughing quietly at the sounds they had just run past.

Arquis slowly stepped off the scale when the doctor told him he was allowed, still holding onto Rin. He then stumbled onto the bed again and fell onto his back. It was done. It was over with. They could move on with the examination. Relief swept over him, and he gave his lover a grateful smile.

The smile dropped when the doctor softly requested that he uncover his top half.

"What? Why?" he asked, defensively crossing his arms in front of his chest.

The older man lifted the tube of his stethoscope, showing it off to the both of them. "I have to listen to your heart and breathing, which means that I'll need access to most of your torso. I suppose that you do not have to take off your robe, but I will ask that you pull down the top."

Reluctantly, the nobleman tugged down the flaps of his robe, exposing a lot of pale skin. And rib. And collarbone. He was made of sharp angles. The doctor carefully sat on the bed and put the buds of the stethoscope into his ears. He didn't comment on the reddish love bites and patches on Arquis's chest. Instead, he went to work, placing the end of the tool over his heart.

"Can you take a nice, deep breath for me? In, and out. In… deeper than that, if you can. And out. In… and out."

Arquis was trying his best, but he was extremely out of his element. This was all so uncomfortable. He looked to Rin to see how they were handling it.

Once they were safely away from the sounds, Honey doubled over. He'd gotten a side stitch from laughing so hard.

"Yeah, something sure sounds delicious!" he snickered. He wasn't even sure what that meant, but he was smiling so hard it hurt. His dimples were out in full force. "Man. Goodness. Nearly died from all that, y'know, loss of oxygen. What a way to go!"
