Wendi had kept missing her shots growing more and more frustrated with herself. She spotted Dove over on the sidelines and immediately ditched her bow to walk over to her friend. She was about to snap the dam thing in half anyway, "Hey."
Dove almost thought the boy was talking to someone else, but he was clearly looking at her. She gave him a hesitant, awkward wave before turning to Wendi.
“Hey,” she made a small, breathy noise. “You looked like you were having some trouble. You want me to…?”
She had realized she could occupy herself by helping her friend. It sounded much better than just watching and eventually letting her depressing thoughts come back. She slowly stood. She forced her eyes to stay on Wendi’s face, to not look down.
"It would be appreciated," Wendi responded with a little smile. She definitely did not want to try shooting the bow again, but if it might make Dove feel better. She could suffer through a few more painful shots.
She wandered over to the basket of quivers and arrows, and the basket of bows.
“You wanna just watch me do it?” She picked up her bow and quiver of arrows, pulling the quiver over her shoulder. She took a few methodical breaths, trying to feel the humid air around her and the occasional drop of rain. To hear the sounds of arrows meeting the targets with a thwack, the hum of murmurs of the other campers. She wouldn’t let her mind wander.
She gripped the bow in her hand and walked back over, glancing around for a free spot. Was she… excited? Or maybe was just come over with anticipation.
"Yeah," Wendi nodded watching Dove take the bow. She stepped away from her not wanting to get in the way, "I think if I took another poor shot, the camp would end up down a bow."
Dove couldn’t help a chuckle. It was nice to feel something other than apathy or sorrow for once. Even the strange dread that came from the rumbling clouds seemed to be pushed to the back of her mind.
She walked in front of the target Wendi had been using, glancing at her and the boy for a moment. She wasn’t sure what to think of him, why did he come after her? She shook her head slightly to refocus. Knowing Wendi would be watching, she held up her her bow and knocked the first arrow. She tried to think of herself as a statue, keeping her eyes on the target and her body frozen with potential energy.
Then she let go. The arrow went straight and true, striking the target just outside the center.
Dove lowered her arms. “I’m not sure how to explain it in words, but could you see what I was doing?”
He smiled back at her, moving to put a hand on his neck or mess with the hair that covers his scar. "It really was no biggie, but I'm glad i was able to help out." he smiled.
Amelia stood up. "Come on, let's get out of here. If I have to look at one more bead I'm going to loose it."
He chuckled getting up with her. "yeah? We should probably go then. Where too ames?" He asked her smiling at her.
"We could back to my cabin. Although it might not be your thing, what with all the…well…girl stuff. We could go to the forge. You can show me your work. I could see in you in action." Amelia offered.
"you sure you want to go to forge? I know you don't like the heat, or how it could mess up your hair. I mean I would like to show you, but I don't know if you actually want to go or if your just saying you want to go for me."
Amelia rolled her eyes. "I already dealt with arts and crafts, and annoying children. I think ill be just fine." She pulled him up
He chuckled a little bit. "Alright then, to the forge it is. However it's a bit of a mess and a bit all over to the place since we have new kids around and all the weapon making."
"If you want to see a mess, you should see the aphrodite cabin in the morning. Nothing will ever beat that." Amelia smirked.
He chuckled again. "Yeah I don't doubt it."
"Yeah… No," Wendi responded after watching Dove shoot an arrow. She could follow what Dove was doing, but had no idea how she was doing it, "I think I'll stick with my daggers instead of a bow."
“Ah.” Dove chuckled nervously. “I’m sorry, I was just trying to… uh, you know… like- like I was-“ she stuttered, trying to get the words out with no avail. “Uh, um- oh, you want to stick with daggers? Alright…”
Disappointed that she couldn’t help her, she fidgeted nervously for a few seconds before deciding to make the most of it and practice herself. She did make a pretty good shot the first time…
She drew back another arrow and let it fly. It hit farther outside the center, almost directly opposite the first.
“What do you think of those clouds, eh?” She said, flashing Wendi a curious glance as she drew back a third. “They gave me and Madison a pretty bad feeling.”
"Don't worry about it, Dove. It's nothing to do with you, okay?" Wendi said seeing Dove fidget and sound disappointed. She glanced at the clouds above and thought for a moment, "I guess. But I don't really know."
Dove just nodded in response, letting the third arrow fly. It nearly missed, hitting just the edge of the target. She blinked in surprise, then made a little sigh. “Huh. I guess I wasn’t paying attention or something.”
The fourth arrow hit near the bottom, halfway between the edge and the center of the target. The fifth hit dead center. Dove stared at it for a moment. She knew she should be proud, but… “It never hits earlier than the fifth try,” she sighed. “Why does that keep happening?”
Mostly muttering to herself, she made the mistake of looking down. The grass was slowly turning brown beneath her feet. She put the bow on the ground and kneeled, rubbing her hands over her face. “Mmmm,” she moaned.
She stood, taking her bow and quiver of arrows and putting them back in their respective buckets. Wandering back over to Wendi, she asked, “Do you have a mythical monsters lesson soon?”
"Mmm I think so yeah, but it's probably one I've already heard before," Wendi responded to Dove implying that if Dove needed someone to talk to or just needed her for a while longer, Wendi would be available. She could tell her friend was having a difficult time at the moment.
