Ender burst out the front door and tripped down the front steps. Late again!
Blaine looked at the time on her phone, tapping her foot. Where was everyone?
Jane came out of the back, arms once again piled high with papers. “Blaine! Anyone else here yet?”
"Nope. What're those?" Blaine asked, gesturing to the papers Jane held in her arms.
“Old files, receipts. Couple of bills here on top. The usual, just a bigger pile,” Jane said.
"Hm, okay. Be careful of that spot over there," Blaine said, pointing to a spot near the water. "Something spilled and I haven't had a chance to clean it up yet."
Ender burst through the front doors. "SORRY I'M LATE AGAIN!" He screamed.
Jane screeched and dropped the papers she was carrying.
"WHOA JANE!" Ender skidded to a halt. "Are you okay? I'm really sorry….."
Blaine jumped a bit, then turned to scowl at Ender.
"Seriously? Dang, Ender, you need a more reliable way to get here," she said, shaking her head.
“No, no, you’re fine..” Jane said, collecting the papers.
"Sorry it's been a rough day so far…"
“What happened?” Jane asked standing up.
"Well my dad had a heart-attack this morning so we had to rush him to the hospital and I was late to school cus I stayed with him awhile so the teacher gave me detention. By the time I had finished I had to go back home and change my clothes cus I spilled coffee on them earlier and I ran all the way here so…" He nodded. "That's what."
“Oh my god! Do you need any help at home?”
"Uh…..well…" He started. "I FORGOT TO FEED THE DOG OH DEAR OH!"
“I can do that,” Jane said, grabbing her keys.
Blaine winced. Ender was having a bad day and she'd practically yelled at him.
"Didn't you tell your teacher why you were late?" she asked.
"Thanks Jane, and yes I did but she's kind of squinty so she didn't believe me…"
"They didn't give you a note or anything to give to her?" Blaine questioned him. She shook her head. "Sorry, that's just really dumb that she wouldn't believe you about something like that."
"Yeah well my dad couldn't write and I didn't think of a note until the teacher was hitting me on the head with a ruler."
“um,” Jane paused by the door. “She hit you?”
"She hit you on the head with a ruler? Seriously? Isn't that illegal?" Blaine wondered. She pulled her phone out of her pocket. "Hold on, I'm Googling that."
"Yeah…..she does that…." He shrugged. "She calls it 'old fashioned discipline'"
