"What even happened? Why did he storm off like that?" Fen had only gotten the worst of the conversation so he had no clue what they were really talking about.
"What even happened? Why did he storm off like that?" Fen had only gotten the worst of the conversation so he had no clue what they were really talking about.
Ori winced again, pressing his face into Fen's shoulder. "We had a fight, baby. I… ah… I got mad at him and he got mad at me and then it just… spiraled, I suppose. None of it was your fault."
"Oh…I guess that explains it." He forced himself to let go of Ori's shirt to give him a proper hug, his knuckles aching after being cramped up the way they were for so long.
Ori seemed startled by the affection, reaching up hesitantly to wrap his arms around Fen's shoulders. "He had no right to say that to you, sweetpea. It was completely uncalled for."
"I just want him to come back. I love him, I don't want him to leave." He whimpered, willing himself to not burst into tears again.
"Oh, darling…" Ori tugged Fen in a little closer, pressing his cheek gently against his partner's. "He won't be gone for long. We can find him darling, he just… he needs some time to himself."
Fen didn't answer, just trying to let himself himself be comforted for once. Heavens knew he needed it right now.
Ori held Fen for a long time—only shaken from his task by the sound of birds singing and signalling that mid-day had all but passed. "Honey, we might need to get up soon. It's… ah… it's a bit late."
"…okay." He mumbled, willing himself to let go. "Sorry for breaking down like that, you shouldn't have had to see me like that."
Ori helped Fen to his feet and then slung an arm around his waist, not quite ready to let him go. "You don't have to apologize honey, I'm just glad I could help you feel a little better. Arch pulled a real dick move."
"He did…I guess. I just wish he'd come back. But he's pretty headstrong. He'll be stuck in his way of thinking for a little while yet."
"I know." Ori sighed quietly, glancing down the trail as though Archer would pop out from behind a tree and ask to talk. "I know, but we've just gotta hope he'll get over it soon."
Fen stared down the trail for a minute, feeling a little silly when nothing happened. "It's Archer. It could take a while and I don't know if I'll last that long."
Ori frowned at that, leaning in to kiss him as his face fell. "The problem was between the two of us, honey. He's bound to feel bad about yelling at you sooner rather than later."
"I sure hope you're right. For both of our sakes. But for now, we should keep going. I'm sure Xachia is having a great time judging us."
He rolled his eyes, pushing himself to his feet with a huff. "Xachia can learn a little patience, we've got more important things to figure out right now."
"Like what? Archer won't come back before he's ready, if he ever will. Besides, we don't even know where he went. It'll be better if we just do this now and then find him later. At least then we'll have some funds to fond him with."
"Don't say that shit, Fen. Of course he's coming back." He crossed his arms, glaring off into the distance where Archer disappeared. "It just doesn't feel right, doing a job when he's out there fuming. And neither of us are in the right head space to fuck around with a demon, let alone one with such a shitty track record."
"But…what if she does something? Xachia doesn't exactly seem friendly to quitters, she could take our heads and make it look like an accident." Fen chewed on his lip.
"She cares more about stopping a monster than catching some low level adventurers that pussied out on her." He wrapped an arm around Fen's waist, gently easing him forward. "There are plenty of redheads in the sea, babe."
"Are you sure? I don't want her coming after us if she decides to be petty and vengeful." Fen chewed on his nails in worry at the thought of being the target of a woman like Xachia.
"If you really think you will we should go on, I just…" He sighed quietly, pursing his lips. "I don't know. It doesn't feel right, doing this without Archer."
"Maybe he'll turn up somewhere on our journey?" Fen offered weakly. "Either way, let's get going." He turned to go catch up with the steadily growing more impatient demon huntress.
