“So am I.” Mara smiled brightly as she started wrapping up the string. “I can't imagine trying to get around without it.” she admitted, turning back to face Darius… as best as she was able to, being on the floor.
“So am I.” Mara smiled brightly as she started wrapping up the string. “I can't imagine trying to get around without it.” she admitted, turning back to face Darius… as best as she was able to, being on the floor.
"Oh, so that's what it's for?" Darius offered his hand to Mara when she had finished up, still mostly focused on their mission of getting food.
Mara nodded and climbed back onto his hand. “Uh-huh. I use it to get to higher places all the time. Tabletops, shelves… It's not easy to reach those areas when they tower over you.” she explained.
"Ah, that makes a lot of sense," Darius admitted. He stood, lifting Mara up and offering to set her down on the counter.
Mara smiled a little, glad he seemed to understand or at least was trying to understand, and slid her arm through the loop of string so that it rested on her shoulder. When Darius brought her up to the counter, she nodded in thanks and carefully stepped onto the more firm surface.
Darius smiled as well, turning when she was off to look in the fridge.
"What to make…"
Mara walked around a little to peer at the large cold box. She’d always wondered what was kept in there. Food, obviously, since she’d seen Darius and others like him use it… but it was beyond impossible for her to even try herself.
Darius moved to the side a bit to give Mara a better view of the fridge.
"Anything look interesting to you?" He offered.
Honestly, everything looked interesting in there. Mara was able to recognize a couple of things but most of the stuff was foreign to her. “I… I don't know.” she admitted softly. “I really don't need much.”
Darius nodded, holding his chin in his hand.
"Mm…" He shifted through some of the things, eventually coming out with a bin of strawberries. "How does some of this sound?"
Mara’s eyes widened at the sight of the ripe red berries and nodded eagerly. “Oh, yes please.” she agreed. Fresh fruit like that was a rarity and a real treat for her and, she imagined, others like her.
"Okay then, strawberries it is!" Darius chuckled some, carrying the strawberries over to the sink to rinse them off. He hummed some as he did, setting a few to the side once they were cleaned.
Mara watched his actions and waited eagerly. Once he had set a few of the berries aside, she slowly walked over to them and started examining them. It was more out of habit than anything else, for her to check the food before taking it, plus she was looking forward to having one.
Darius sat the container of strawberries down when he had enough for them, looking to Mara.
"Would you like me to cut one up for you?" He offered, pulling open a drawer to pull a knife out.
Mara looked up at the question and nodded. “Yes, please.” she said, taking a few steps back so she wouldn't be in the way.
Darius nodded, taking one of the strawberries and starting to cut it up.
"How much would you like?"
Mara shrugged a little. “Maybe less than half?” she said unsure since some of the strawberries were about the proportionate size of a watermelon to her.
"Got it!" Darius hummed, cutting a bit less than half of the strawberry off and cubing it so Mara wouldn't have to just eat giant slices of it.
Mara smiled gratefully as she watched Darius. The cubes would definitely be much easier for her to handle and take home, if there were any left. Though she realized now that she had forgotten her bag.
"Here- the white parts a bit more sour than the inner flesh." Darius offered some of the cubes to Mara, smiling.
“Thank you.” she said sincerely as she sat down near the pieces he gave her. Mara picked up a rich red cube and hummed happily as she bit into the juicy strawberry.
Darius took a moment to pull his own chair over, picking up one of the strawberries up and cutting off the leaves before just popping it in his mouth.
Mara smiled at the delicious flavor and closed her eyes as she took another bite.
Darius smiled as he saw how Mara was enjoying the strawberry, letting himself relaxed in his seat. They were fine- no one could touch them here. Could touch her.
Mara, obviously, hadn't forgotten this morning's incident already. It would take more time before that happened but she felt much safer with Darius watching over her and the delicious fresh fruit was certainly distracting her from those unpleasant memories. “This is so good.” she said, smiling brightly at her friend.
Darius smiled back, making sure his mouth was empty of any strawberry.
"I'm glad you like it! If you want I could get more different kinds of berries the next time I go to the store," he offered.
Mara’s eyes widened as she looked up at him. She knew that there were many different kinds of fruit and berries…. but she wasn't sure what they were all called. “Wha- What other kinds are there?” she asked.
"Well, there are blueberries," Darius started, thinking. "And raspberries. Most of the berries I see in stores are on the sweeter side, though some are sour. Most berries have several different varieties, too."
Mara nodded, taking in the information with a soft hum. “I don't think I've had too much that was sour… but I know I like sweet, like these.” she said lifting up a new piece of the strawberry before biting into it.
"Okay then! I can work with that, for sure." Darius smiled as he and Mara spoke, putting his hands on his knees for now.
