Kit nodded a bit. "Mmkay… it's not common to run into other fairies or humans here out in the open anyway. Sometimes we'll see them in towns and stuff, though."
Kit nodded a bit. "Mmkay… it's not common to run into other fairies or humans here out in the open anyway. Sometimes we'll see them in towns and stuff, though."
Marin hummed softly, nodding.
"We'll do our best then, so we don't have to do that." They didn't want Kit to be in any danger, after all.
"Mhmm. They probably wouldn't do anything in the middle of the town, honestly, so we should theoretically be alright…"
"Mhm. And we'll really be alright, because I won't let anything happen no matter what." Marin offered a small, encouraging smile, hugging Kit and rubbing the boy's back.
Kit nodded again, yawning as he huddled closer. "Mm… mhmm… thanks." He murmured softly. "Is it any better in the human realm? Or is it like it is here?"
"In the human world… there are those that hurt other people no matter what," Marin said softly, "but there are many many more people who don't want to hurt anyone at all."
"Mm… so I guess all humans are different, just like fairies. My parents said that they're all mean, though…"
"Am I mean?" Marin asked, head tilting some. "It's safe to assume people are, though, if so many hurt fairies…" The mage let out a small breath, holding Kit close.
"No! No, you're not mean at all!" Kit insisted, sitting back to look up at Marin. "You're really nice! I-I was honestly surprised since my parents only ever told me bad things… I didn't expect you to be nice. I-I'm really glad you are though, obviously."
"I was worried for a moment you didn't think I was nice because of what your parents told you," Marin admitted. "I don't want you to feel scared of it. I'm really glad for it, too."
"No, I know I can't believe everything they say." Kit laughed nervously. "They've only had bad experiences with humans, so they're not gonna speak highly of them, even if some are nice."
"I'm sure they want to make sure you're safe, too," Marin said. They hummed, rubbing Kit's back.
"Yeah…" Kit sighed softly. "I'm sure you're right. It's hard, though. They always make me feel really stupid. I-I guess it's warranted, though… I mean, they probably know how to raise kids better than I do. They've had a bunch, after all."
"They shouldn't make you feel stupid," Marin said. "They should help you understand things without doing that to you." The mage ran their fingers through Kit's hair, humming some.
Kit shrugged a bit and sighed. "I-I dunno… maybe I ask stupid questions and don't realize it. They've probably had to teach it a bunch. I don't wanna bother them."
"Kit, lot's of children ask 'dumb' questions that really aren't dumb. Stuff that seems obvious to adults can be things you might not understand, and it's their job to teach you, not make you feel dumb." Marin ran their fingers through Kit's hair, humming softly.
"I guess so…" Kit sighed softly and leaned into Marin's hand. "I don't wanna bother them or make them mad or anything, though. I'm sure they get annoyed answering a bunch of questions…"
"They shouldn't." Marin hummed softly, holding Kit in their lap still. "Know that I'll always answer any questions you have as best I can, okay?"
Kit looked up at Marin curiously and nodded, fidgeting with his hands. "O-Okay… I don't wanna annoy you or anything, though."
"You won't annoy me," Marin assured. They offered a small smile as Kit looked up at them, patting the boy's back.
"Are you sure?" Kit relaxed a bit into the touch, trilling softly. "I don't… don't wanna cause any problems."
"I'm sure. You're not going to cause any problems by asking questions." Marin smiled, starting to gently rub Kit's back when they saw the boy relaxing.
"Mmm…" Kit closed his eyes and huddled closer, seeming to like the attention. "Alright… if… if you're sure…" He was quiet for a bit. "Are there a lot of kids where you're from?"
"Lots and lots," Marin said, nodding some. "There's a lot of humans in general, too." The mage continued to rub Kit's back, arms wrapping more securely around him.
Kit nodded a bit. "Did you ever have any kids?" He asked curiously, tilting his head slightly to the side. "It seems like you're used to being around them."
"No, I haven't," Marin admitted. "But when I was younger I would help care for the other children in the home who were apprentices, too."
"Oh, that's cool! How old are you?" Kit asked curiously, seeming to relax a bit with the distraction from his family and situation.
"I'm thirty-two," Marin said, letting out a small breath. Every day, they felt like they were much, much older than they actually were.
"Oh, that's cool! I'm…" Kit paused for a moment and looked down at his hands as though counting on his fingers, "…ten! You're younger than my parents are. They're pretty old. They don't look that old, though."
"Ah, I am?" Marin said, chuckling some. They found it strange to think someone older than them had such a young child.
