Simon hummed happily, running his fingers through the leopard’s fur with one hand, and opening his book back up with the other.

The leopard looked quite happy with the petting, settling down in Simon's lap, tail flicking occasionally. Mia looked between them for a moment, then went back to her book. She wanted to be close with Simon, but the leopard made her weary, and she kept some space between them.

Simon smiled softly as he read, very much happy with the current situation. He hoped Mia would become more at ease the longer the leopard was here. He continued to pet them, not wanting the leopard to leave.

Mia didn't trust anything to do with Astral. For all she knew, he was controlling the leopard, or had just replaced them himself to get Simon cuddles.
He wasn't, but Mia didn't know that. The big cat looked content, eyes closing.

After a few more minutes, Simon cast a reassuring smile over at Mia, the leopard still settled on his lap.

(Yes but if Simon found out it would ruin leopard snuggles and we don't want that)

Mia looked over as well. Finally, she moved over to Simon's side once more, head resting on his shoulder. She didn't smile, but she was slightly more at ease since nothing had happened.

Simon let out a content sigh, very much at peace right now. And comfortable and warm and just overall having a good time.

The leopard shifted some, moving to lick their paws. Mia tensed some at the sudden movement, but relaxed again. She let out a sigh.
"Mm…"

Simon moved to scratch the top of the big cat’s head, his eyes still focused on his book. He was glad he’d decided to let Astral take them home, it was nice to have a pet around besides him even though the leopard wasn’t necessarily a normal pet.

((At some point after the child’s born, Simon’s probably going to figure out that Astral will want them all to be a family and just like- show up to sleep in Astral’s room with him.))

The leopard paused in their grooming, leaning up into Simon's hand. They yawned, settling down again. They weren't normal at all, but they were still a big loving cat who just wanted to snuggle.

Simon smiled contently. The snuggles were pretty nice honestly. Apparently everyone who lived in the palace just wanted constant snuggles.

((Simon, who pulled like three all nighters before this just to make sure he’d be able to fall asleep: stfu ))

That's easily explained as a certain author being Touched Deprived and having a love language of physical affection but their boyfriend lived on the other side of the entire freaking world.
Tangent aside, the leopard shifted around, snout under one paw. Mia let out a soft breath, looking up at Simon.
"How you doing?"

(Astral, when he first wakes up: oh my god I'm so sorry, this has-)

“I’m doing great!” Simon said, a wide smile on his face. In Simon’s mind, the leopard was just like the cats he used to take care of, just a lot bigger.

((Simon just like: isn’t this what you wanted??? Eventually???))
((Simon’s smart he’s not waiting around for Astral to threaten him into it lmao))
((OKAY BUT ASTRAL WOULD FAKE SLEEPWALK JUST TO GO GET SNUGGLES FROM SIMON))

"Good!!" Mia wasn't expecting that response. Expecting Simon to be so… happy, especially since Astral had visited earlier.

(Astral: blushes some Well, y-yeah, but… I'd never tell you to. Hell, I probably wouldn't have ever asked. I don't want you to be uncomfortable)
(Simon, two seconds later and already at the door: BYE BITCH)

He was doing well at the moment because he had two perfect distractions, the book and a big happy cat on his lap. Maybe things would get worse later, but for now, everything was okay.

((But yeahhhh Simon just like: I want this kid to grow up with two good parents, and since that clearly isn’t going to happen, we can at least make it seem that way. Might as well start now))

Simon, after taking a calm sip of his drink: “because your dick ._.”))

For now, yes, everything was. The leopard had fallen asleep on Simon's lap, which let Mia relax completely.
"How's the book so far?"

((Simon: this is strictly for appearances. Them like a month later: constant cuddles when it’s time for bed))

“It’s good, I like it so far.” He said, speaking a little bit quieter now that the animal on his lap was asleep.

(Astral: Understood. A month later: all the cuddles)

"Mm, I'm glad for that. I, ah, don't think you'll be getting up to get a new book any time soon…" Mia giggled a little bit, legs folded under herself.

((Simon mentally still like “ah yes just for appearances.” Simon like a month or two later, waking up from a nightmare and crying into Astral’s chest “wait a damn minute-“ ))

Simon laughed along with her. “Yeah I guess you’re right.” He agreed. “Oh well, at least it’s for a good cause.”

(Aha, the best form of character development: fake lovers to lovers XD)

"Mhm… we could always switch books when we both finish." Mia chuckled, arms around her knees as she came to the end of the book.

((Simon showing up to tell Mia that he’s once again caught the feels like “hey bestie don’t hurt me 👉🏼👈🏼“))

“True!” He checked his book, seeing that she’d finished hers. “I have about a hundred pages left of this one and then you can read it if you want.” He offered.

(Mia: You're not the one in danger here ò0ó)

"Okay! While you're doing that I can go pick up a few more books. What kinds would you want?" Mia moved to stand, smiling softly.

((Simon: Mia please- ;w;))
((Mia and Alec would get along lmao))

“Ummmm if you could find me a sci-fi or a mystery book that would be great.” He said, offering her a grateful smile. “Thank you!”

(They would so much lol)
(Mia, huffing: I want to murder Astral so much for what he does to Simon but I'm too terrified)
(Alec: I might be of some help–)

"Okay! You're welcome!" Mia smiled, heading off into the library shelves and dissapearing.

((Simon: dad no I love him D: ))
((Alec: Simon sweetie what you feel is Stockholm syndrome, now just let me stab him a few times- ))

Simon went back to reading, beginning to hum a soft tune as he did so, still absentmindedly petting the leopard with his other hand.

(Mia: This is not love. This is desperation and proximity to a literally hot god of the sun)
(Mia: I wish to stab as well)

The leopard yawned some in their sleep, rolling some and pressing their head into Simon's stomach slightly. Mia eventually came back with a small stack of books, smiling some.

((Alec: no worries, there’s plenty of stab for everyone to have a turn ))
((Simon: D: guys please))

Simon stopped his humming briefly, looking down at the leopard with a smile. He pat the top of their head gently before returning to his book.

(Mia, knife in Astral already: Oh no too late what a shame)
(The child: New game? New game!)

Mia sat down with Simon, the pile of books to the side.
"Hopefully I got some things you'll like."

“I’m sure you did great.” He reassured. “Thanks again for getting them for me. I should finish this book up in the next twenty minutes.”
